And a suitable breathing mask and eye mask to protect you according to product instructions.

Use old clothes or an old coat when using the backpack sprayer as it will bleach clothes.
The liquid chlorine solution will also kill weeds and grass and stop new ones germinating for a while. Of course it may also kill off other plants one doesn't want killed like flowers, so take care with where the liquid goes. It will also bleach your clothes so wear old ones and
This solution is what swimming pool owners use to give a big increase in chlorine content of a swimming pool, in what they call shock treatment. The level of chlorine released by the solution goes down over time and eventually drops to zero and it becomes harmless. People swim in it after all!

Thanks for sharing. So glad I came across this as it's so timely and need to have mine done.
Cheers. Thanks for the feedback.
Very useful video for a common problem , thank you sir. Most helpful , I'm subscribed !
Cheers
A builder advised me that to keep the roof clear of moss after cleaning the best thing is to install some bare copper just below the ridge. I used 6mm single cable ( I'm a electrician ) stripped and looped under the top row. I did it nearly 20 years ago, still no moss. Apparently, copper sulphate leaches out when it rains and kills the spores.
That’s good to hear, it was something I had been thinking about doing. It’s just the method for attaching and holding in strong winds that I need to think about. Do you get any green staining?
That is genius.
@@falconeranatolia you can get strips that have a nail hole. Put them under the top tiles. And as it’s strips it sits flat. Nail hole keeps it in place, same nail for attaching the tile
Great video with handy tips thanks
Cheers.
Great job mate...all i would add is leave the hypo on for about 20 mins...rinse thoroughly the surrounding area with water before hand and rinse hypo off thoroughly after can be very damaging to wildlife and vegitation will stain lead flashing etc....and after apply a biocide which will go on cleaning the roof and prevent moss and algae growing back.....ditch the car battery thou 😅😅
Thanks
Dangerous recipe for disaster, always use 2 -3 bags of yellow/builders sand pressed to the floor with your foot. These will grip the floor well and won't wander off after a couple of minutes like a helper does.
Thanks for your input. Sounds a good idea.
Why didn’t i think of that?! Duhh… I use it in my pool… lol Thanks for sharing!
Cheers. It’s great on patios too. I have another video on that.
I’ll check it out too! Thanks again!
Does the chlorine solution bleach the tiles? My house has 1930's red clay tiles and I would like to retain what little colour there is left in them. Thanks for sharing some great advice.
The chlorine (bleach) seems to bleach off the algae, moss and bacteria etc and show the red tile colour again without bleaching the red out. If in doubt try on a small area.
I enjoyed this video although I was looking for a more time effective process so I can offer it to the elderly locally
Thanks. You could just spray it with the chlorine/bleach and not bother scrapping off the moss. If it is saturated enough it should eventually die and drop off.
Great job, would it be ok to paint a sealer on to make it like new after the work you have done
Thanks, yes it would but in my experience they never seem to last as long as you would like.
Does it really work as well as that without scrubbing? Also is the added calgon important? I cant seem to find it with that in.
Yes. No Calgon not important
Great video, very informative, thank you! Did you add any surfactant to the mix? Do you recommend rinsing the roof post application of the SH? Thank you
Thanks. Sometimes the liquid chlorine for pools has calgon, a water softener, in it but it is not necessary and a surfactant isn't necessary either. Don’t wash it off.
@@comeinhandynow Thank you!
British weather will probably wash it off for you anw :)
Hi, I have 1930s concrete tiles, will this chemical make them brittle?
I don’t think so as the tiles in the video are concrete tiles, been fine for 10 years. Just my opinion.
How would this solution affect black/ anthracite plastic guttering, fascia’s etc ?
I would guess it probably wouldn’t affect it but just in case test on an out of sight spot first and wash off the facial / gutter afterwards.
Using power washer makes the roof much cleaner. Good solution prior painting the roof tiles.
It also spreads a load of moss mess absolutely everywhere. It also won’t kill the moss. So not for me.
Power washer and then chemicals. Did try on my roof. All moss etc went down through down pipe with no mess at all.
@@michatylicki17 i was planning to use chemicals first. Let the chemicals do their work for a 2hours and wash away with pressure washer
@@michatylicki17 after pressure washing, you must coat your tiles, because they will get porous.
@@ZafZap What do you then re-coat them with?
Also, would it work as well on sand textured tiles ?
Yep
Ive done my roof now and it looks amazing, now its the next day and it raining hard, will it ruin it and stop it from carrying on getting cleaner ?
@@TheSirbrown Great. Probably not but I wouldn’t worry about it, you can’t stop the rain.
Do you rinse off the solution?
No
@@comeinhandynow whats the rang on the backpack wanna do it but a softwash setup is around $500, and i just need it for my house
Please don't rely on the battery to secure the base of your ladder - A bag of sand or two will secure it better and if you secure a rope to the top rung you can place it over the roof and secure it on the other side. you would be better off using a roof ladder that reaches over the ridge- be careful and be safe.
Agreed. I think I did mention about a roof ladder and being safer than me.
@@comeinhandynow - You did but it still gave me kittens - Mind you I've done a lot worse :D
A car battery as a ladder arrester!? Use a ridge ladder and a tower!
Scraping off manually is one way, but I’d use a pressure washer. Would do that roof in a quarter of the time!
Yes if you have one. I didn’t. I have a pressure washer and chose not to use it as it would have spread loads of muck everywhere. Chlorine killing the moss etc is neater and much longer lasting than just washing it off. And it bleaches stains to get the colour back.
Redland regent farmhouse red tile
Close, it’s actually Marley Bold Roll
Great Video --- no way I'm using a ladder or getting on roof --- not for me :)
Thanks, you do need a good stable ladder with wide feet.
Hypochlorite could harm the tiles my friend
Nope it hasn’t. Been using it for years. It is the same stuff they use in swimming pools that people swim in.
No it won't if its rinsed down properly
Blow my mind how ppl asking 2/4k € a roof…
Partly why I do it myself. That and you can take more time and do a better job, or do it the way you want.
Can't believe ur speaking about safety when ur ladder is at a very unsafe angle.
I do take a few little risks but don’t recommend others to do the same.
