I want a time machine to go back to 1986 and relive these moments again. I want to go back to when life was simpler and more relaxed and things were just better.
Allison Venezio Preston / Allison's Written Words I remember that episode. Made sure not to miss it. Of course, it’s lip-synched to the studio track, like SG always was
Thing that cracked me up about Solid Gold, and I watched every week is that no one was plugged in and they all performed to the studio track. This band was never the same after Terry passed but Bill provided a much-needed pulse, a kick in the ass as well as excellent musicianship. The guy did it all, wrote new material, arranged it, and sang his butt off. After they canned him they were done, unless you enjoy the ever-changing cover band...
Despite younger than Robert Lamm for 3 years. Bill with a moustache makes him looks like the oldest members of the band. But he also looks cool with this too :)
Always felt Bill's songs and strong lead vocals steered Chicago into a different direction - almost like Bill Champlin and his backing band Chicago. I like it as much as any Chicago era, it just sounds like a different Chicago that's all.
Very astute observation, I agree. I think they brought him in thinking he'd be more reminiscent of Terry Kath, but he worked in a different way. Less collaborative. Interesting interlude though, I always regarded him as a serious pro, and they got some hits out of him.
This was the era of Chicago I grew up listening to on Adult Contemporary, but it's funny, as an adult, if I hear a song from that era, I'm like "that's Chicago?!" Back when, I cared more about the song I was listening to, and less about who sings it. Now, I hear someone start with "Hey, Allison, Chicago..." no need to finish, just play the song!
I have had the pleasure of meeting him and his lovely wife Tamara. Bill is one of the funniest, nicest, and humblest of guys you will ever meet. He is incredible.
IT´S ALRIGHT pieseň skupiny CHICAGO z vystupenia v TV programe SOLID GOLD v roku 1986. Autorm piesne boli Bill Champlin a David Foster a pochádzala z albumu CHICAGO 18, ktorý skončil na 35.m. a od RIAA získal zlatú platňu.
I'm (almost) speechless. This band simply didn't deserve Bill Champlin. I'm fairly certain Bill didn't much appreciate the outfits either. The nadir of his career.
Danny Seraphine at 4:35 drops one of his drumsticks and keeps on drumming, what a pro! OK ...... I know Chicago was lip syncing but I just found it amusing!
I know Bill did a lot of his best writing while working with David Foster, but I used to make the comment that I lost interest in the band Chicago long before they became "Foster Children."
Some insisted on live or not at all on "Solid Gold." The hosts always sang their songs and cover songs live. They did have a musical director through much of the 8 years the show was on the air.
There's a Another Video, they Actually Sang this Song Live in Solid Gold, But the Audio Quality is Kind of Bad so This Is Why I Think they Lip-Synced It.
Just saw Leonid and Friends live last night. They're keeping the original music alive. I don't know what this was, but it wasn't Chicago, and nobody is covering this version of for a good reason.
Dawayne Bailey was in the back in the white pants. That was the tear he joined Chicago band. He sure would change his wardrobe style in the future, and for the better!😅
RIGHT!!! But since he was only just in, 1985, they relegated him to the back until he 'paid his dues'. And Man, once he got up front, he was a showstopper!!!
They performed so well together considering the band drama. Also Robert seems like eifher in great spirits here or a little high. When did he get clean? Just curious.
Why didn't Danny just grab another stick handy, it made it more obvious by chasing after his stick unfortunately right when the camera just happened to pan on him,, he could have even play with one hand it was playing to a recording anyway. Poor Danny dang.
come on man I love bill champlin ... single and runaway were life long gems and his version of turn your love around is pure gold where he features on thicke of the night 1983 with Jay Graydon ...its superb .. its on youtube .... but this video with Chicago is not great sorry !!
fyrcrack1 His musicianship was too strong for Chicago? Assuming you aren't trolling, that comment is quite far afield of anything I've seen in a long time as regards this subject. Say what you will about the band's artistic direction, but their musical acumen both collectively and individually stands up to any other in the world of rock pop and roll.
@@ericmercaldo7840 His vocals were more aggressive, but complemented the pop-rock voices of Jason Scheff and the others. He was there for 4 years of the Peter Cetera era as well.
I love Chicago, the band, yes genius (and Bill). I'm just saying, this was the farthest they may have drifted from what the purest might recognize as "Chicago" It's hard not to miss the old Terry days when he lead the band in a different direction. But hey, I'm not knocking your type of music appreciation, to each his own. Piece Benny :)
I have to agree a bit here. Although I love Chicago, this is very, very campy. I just don't get it, Robert Lamm by far has the best voice in the group but became way under-used. Just happier being the band leader.
Solo looks fake u hear a ton of vibrato and don’t see his hand doing it, the other guitar player is straight strumming. Then at the end they looked like they were going to keep playing and the music stopped super fake.
I want a time machine to go back to 1986 and relive these moments again. I want to go back to when life was simpler and more relaxed and things were just better.
He's a talented musician. Was lucky to see him several times with Chicago before he departed.
Back when Bill was enthusiastic about being in Chicago...
Champlin with a mustache. Nice.
Bill such a great singer and performer.....still to this day!
Bill is* such
Bill is such an incredible vocalist. Then and now. You still got it, babe! Aloha!
Bill Champlin is just awesome!! My buddy gets to play with him occasionally. Awesome!
Solid Gold?! I swear, I'm discovering way more about Chicago than I ever thought possible!
Allison Venezio Preston / Allison's Written Words I remember that episode. Made sure not to miss it. Of course, it’s lip-synched to the studio track, like SG always was
I love love this song. It's not that 80's mushy music they made. It's like their old music turned modern.
Thing that cracked me up about Solid Gold, and I watched every week is that no one was plugged in and they all performed to the studio track. Hate stupid comments lie yours. how can they be a cover band when they have original members still in the band??
@@fieldysgrl98
There’s only 3 sometimes 2 original members touring as of 2018.
Ingrid, I still miss "Sons of Champlin".
He made a MINT writing "After the Love Is Gone" for Earth, Wind & Fire. That's like their second biggest hit.
the best band of all time
Dwayne Bailey clean cut omg!
I still miss Bill Champlin with Chicago! Period!
+Ingrid Franke I miss him AND Peter Cetera! They were the best!
@@LisaGemini I miss Jason Scheff as well.
Never noticed before that Danny dropped one of his sticks near the end of the song lol....

Whoops, Danny dropped his drumsticks and yet someone's beating the drums.
This is the album recording.
That is funny, they have the studio recording playing here :).
Bill Champlin, be still my heart ❤️ geez it doesn't get better than Bill. I can't wait to go see him this fall. My dream come true ❤️
Wow... 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I still miss my period when I think of the Sons of Champlin..
Bill!
Be sure to check out Champlin's solo album - Runaway - which came out right before he joined Chicago... incredible songs, vocals, players.
Always felt Bill's songs and strong lead vocals steered Chicago into a different direction - almost like Bill Champlin and his backing band Chicago. I like it as much as any Chicago era, it just sounds like a different Chicago that's all.
Greg Messina A different direction? I'd say he steered them towards the bluesy, dark side of town.
They wanted to get away from the Peter Cetera sound which they felt held them back after he left the band.....
Very astute observation, I agree. I think they brought him in thinking he'd be more reminiscent of Terry Kath, but he worked in a different way. Less collaborative. Interesting interlude though, I always regarded him as a serious pro, and they got some hits out of him.

one name :DAVID FOSTER!
He’s the best singer in the band!! They’re all great but he’s my favorite!!
I have had the pleasure of meeting him and his lovely wife Tamara. Bill is one of the funniest, nicest, and humblest of guys you will ever meet. He is incredible.
I have a 45 of this on B side of "Your'e Not Alone? from Chicago19 (1988).
This period,Bill looks so
Macho and handsome!
Greg Magpantay, doesn’t he?
i really love this song for it's alright by chicago it was fantastic
GREAT SONG
Amazing chicago!😮
When Chicago stubbornly refused to release this song as a single they effectively lost Bill. Very shortsighted.
Say what? He left 23 years later.
Somehow I missed Bill's mustache phase.
i missed this whole line up!!! But then again ,,,a lot of the '80's is now a blur,,,,,I honestly don't remember this tune at all
John Reynolds The first touring line-up after Peter Cetera left in 1985.
Meredith Evans Meredith, I think he opted for the mustache rather than the permanent! :-)
I bet he did too!
Happy birthday Bill

the 80's were ______
Wonderful!😀
better than the present in many ways.
Awesome!
He is will great musian

bill avait un charme fou je suis une grande fan de bill encore maintenant , dommage qu'il est quitté la bande ds CHICAGO
Bill Champlin was the front man here, although Jason Scheff shared the duty as well I believe at the time.
That charlies in the eyes
Yep.
You know something? This song's alright.😂😂
😘😘😘
I know Bill did a lot of his best writing while working with David Foster, but I used to make the comment that I lost interest in the band Chicago long before they became "Foster Children."
Lip synced for tv? Sounds absolutely like the album version..lol
Lots of shows back then did that. American Bandstand, Solid Gold...Top of the Pops gave artists the option of singing live or lip sync.
Everybody lip synched back in those days on TV. You can tell by the instrument playing and it sounds just like it does on the album.

Weird seeing Bill on guitar instead of on keyboards.

Cheesy typical pop.
Rats, when they talked I hoped for actual playing not lip-sync. BU that was Solid Gold. /c:
03:09 who is on electric guitar in the back there? Undoubtedly there the one playing the majority of the guitar parts for the song
Dawayne Bailey was in the back in the white pants. That was the tear he joined Chicago band. He sure would change his wardrobe style in the future, and for the better!😅
Uh, what is DeWayne doing way back there?? Get him up front so he can shred!!!!!!
RIGHT!!! But since he was only just in, 1985, they relegated him to the back until he 'paid his dues'. And Man, once he got up front, he was a showstopper!!!
I was wondering if that was him. The camera never focuses on him.

The Chicago sound is totally absent on this one.

They all hated Champlin. Seeing the smiley smiles makes me want to vomit.
let say it again -- his voice was too strong for this group
+maurizio sabatini His musicianship was too strong for Chicago also.

Good for you!
I don't love this song but I bet you could find way worse crap that he's written. I mean be fair!
I don't wanna live without your love is his worst song ever.
Great singer , not a great song at all. Definitely not the Chicago sound 👎👎👎
Wow this is poor
This is NOT Chicago!
It's awful...
