In 2008 the Dodgers had a game in which Korean starter Chan Ho Park opened the game, Taiwanese reliever Hong-Chi Kuo picked up a few innings, and Japanese reliever Takashi Saito pitched the 9th.
I am a Dodgers fan since 1977. Since then I lived in Italy, South America and now in the UK. I carry the love for the team in my heart, literally around the world. There were times, at the beginning of the 80's when the only way to know the scores, was to go to find an American newspaper and read the results. There was no internet, no satellite discs. I think this limited the international development of baseball, since you really need to either play or to watch a lot of games before you start playing, and if there is nobody to play with, the only way is to watch and learn. Now, we have the tools, and now a team is using it, and coming out of the psicological lock that Baseball is an American sport. I think Dodgers are doing a great deal of good for the sport and its future. Think about for a moment and you will realise the immense potential of what they are doing.
Sports shouldn’t be fair. Teams with the bigger Fanbase should have access to more money, talent. Don’t like it? Then build your fan base in both the international and the American market. Imagine if Real Madrid was forced to spend just as much as Ipswich town. Just so we can be fair to the few fans of Ipswich town. Thats the NBA and NFL, yuck
@@pinverarity Exactly. I still hate the fact we traded Piazza instead of locking him up long-term. Cheap Fox. McCourt is someone that I refuse to believe he actually owned my Dodgers. Terrible owners all of them.
@@TheSmarq17I agree with Fox and I’ve been saying that for a long time. While I dislike Frank McCourt for bankrupting the team. You can’t say he didn’t try. The golden age The Dodgers are in started with McCourt and company. He hired Ned Colletti. Who drafted Kershaw Kemp Martin Jansen and traded for Ethier. Less we forget. The 12 year and counting playoff run started with McCourt so this hatred people have for McCourt is warranted at times we tend to forget that it started with him. I think it’s time we start giving him some credit for where we’re at.
And in 2022, the Dodgers arguably didn't actually miss their first round pick. Their pick got moved to #40, and they took Dalton Rushing with that. Ended up being our #1 ranked prospect right now, a consensus top 40 prospect in all of baseball at the moment, and could crack our opening day roster this year.
Ohtani set a life goal for himself during high school, which was to one day join the Dodgers and win the World Series. He graduated high school in March 2013. And he will undoubtedly be influencing the next generation of players. The Dodgers not only had many famous Japanese pitchers when Ohtani was growing up, but they also had Japanese scouts visiting all over Japan. They are often the first MLB team to build relations with top Japanese players when in high school and university, which eventually paid off in the case of Ohtani. Mariners had Ichiro Suzuki and Yankees had Hideki Matsui, but neither team had long term marketing stategy like the Dodgers. The only thing I remember about Matsui with the Yankees was they didn't sign him the following season after being the MVP in the World Series. That certainly destroyed their image in Japan at that time because it's still mentioned in Japanese sports media today on why Sasaki shouldn't consider the Yankees.
FUN FACTS: Dodgers give other teams money. Dodgers have the biggest fan base in baseball. It was estimated that they were close to 2 Million fans in the 2024 World Series championship parade. Dodgers have the largest attendance for the past 10 years.
Many interviews show most highschool players in Korea wants to become like Ha-seong Kim, Jung-hoo Lee or Hye-seong Kim and young players even wants to go to Kiwoom Heroes where they could be posted to Major League Quite easily
The Angels are not in the same city as the Dodgers. They are not even in the same county. The Angels play in Anaheim, in Orange County. It is still SoCal, but it ain't Los Angeles, it's OC.
Unfail advantage? No, not unfair...earned for having the foresight to see that Japan is a hotbed of Baseball interest. The Dodgers have known this since the mid-60s, when Walter O'Malley would arrange post-season games in Japan for the Dodgers against Japan's best teams. The process goes back a lot longer than you say in this video.
I think one of the main competitive advantages the dodgers have is proximity to Asia. Asian players would rather take a 10 hour one way flight to LAX versus 13 hour flight to new York many times per year.
Don’t forget the commercial deals and influence Kim could get in KOREA as a Dodger. THAT i believe is a significant advantage for Kim’s overall money making ability.
All the complainers are simply showing their ignorance when they cite all the $$$ spent by the Dodgers as evidence that everything is being bought. They ignore, completely, all the drafting and player development that happens throughout the system - a system that has been consistently maintained through the years with considerable attention and care. Add in the excellent trades made over the years that brought players considered flops by their previous teams and "suddenly" became integral to winning with the Dodgers. It's not simply throwing $$$ at everything, there's actually a comprehensive plan in place. At every level the Dodgers are designed to win from top to bottom and to keep winning in the long run.
Also all these teams have money and the main reason they’re not popular with players is cause they see the owners don’t invest in their team. They let them fail year after year just to own them
"The Dodgers have so much more money than the other teams"? The top 10 teams are all $200 million plus.. the Dodgers are 3rd in payroll behind the Mets and the Yankees. We were 1 game away from being eliminated by the Padres again. The Dodgers are a good team yes, but not the only good team.
All mlb teams could’ve been signing more Asian players for decades, but a racist myth endured that only the top %.1 of Asian players were good enough for mlb. Don’t be mad at the dodgers for figuring out what everyone else didn’t.
this isnt a new thing tho? youre hyping this up like other teams havent done it before. like the DR isnt the same for all 30 teams. And the dodgers have been a destination for years now, not just cuz of Ohtani and Yamamoto. Also using past ROYs when it was different owners and GMs is misreading, this current ownership and FO had nothing to do with that. Hell even this current FO had nothing to do with Kerhsaw, Seager or Bellinger

And by that time Ramon Martinez was in Boston and hideo nomo was in Milwaukee. To be generous, he is putting Kevin brown in there for name value because no one is gonna know who Tom candiotti or Darren dreifort is...
While yes other teams have academies in the DR. The Dodgers were the 1st build one in the DR. The Dodgers were the 1st to tap in the Koren/Japan market too. Nomo was the 2nd Japanese to play in the MLB, but he's credited as being the 1st to bring Japanese players to the MLB. Now with the ROY, I think he's trying to point how great the Dodgers are developing in talent and in scouting talent too

Kim will make more money in endorsements with the Dodgers than the Angels. That will make up for the salary offering between the two franchises.
