After editing this video, I realised that I really didn't discuss the cost and spent my time comparing it to less expensive cameras. My quick thoughts are that the $4,500 USD price tag feels appropriate, even though it's really steep. When looking at high-end cameras like this I tend to look past price differences of any less than about 30%. These are tools for designed for professionals that are going to be able to pay it off after a few jobs. If this camera feels too expensive, then it's probably not right for you.

It's beyond me why mirrorless cameras don't just close the shutter to protect the sensor for lens change when you switch them off. At least give users the option... Sonys have already options for everything else...

I enjoyed the video and have been catching up on some of your older videos. I don't know why I never saw your channel before. I do hope that with camera's like the A9 we start to see more competition from Nikon and Cannon to beef up some of the capabilities of their line up for more dual purpose with better video offerings along with the great stills. Then again we just have to wait and see. Keep up the great work.

Solid solid review man! I bought my A7RII at a time when the A9 was about to come out. I think a video like this would have made me bite the extra $1800. However I'm very happy with my a9, luckily I'm not in dire need of that super high speed shutter.

love your videos, i tested a a9 at the store last week, and it's a beast, my main concerns are the sony menu system will need a bit to get used to , compared to canon's (which I've been using forever) and although it's the photographer that creates the image, sony's features are so nice to have. My other struggles with switching are 1) cost to switch, and there's one lens i use 90% of the time, the 200 f2, which sony doesn't have and the balance would be quite off ( i mounted the 200 f2 onto my m5)
I love how sony is pushing and succeeding

THANK YOU! colour science DOES only apply to jpeg/video. Even certain reviewers that only shoot RAW say they prefer the Canon files for their colour... you can indeed match almost any RAW to another as you well demonstrated. I shot at a music festival and in the press tent a load of photographers were talking up their camera brand over another but they had no idea about camera calibration in LightRoom so pretty much all of their posturing was negated by the Adobe default profile making anything look the same.
I'm interested in the eye sensor being less sensitive. One bug bear to all the Sony cameras.
The noise may be related to the electronic shutter. I find there could be more noise in the electronic shutter files versus mechanical ones but I've not done extensive testing on this just a little bit.
AWB does need to be a little better for sure.
I've rarely had the levels of dust in the mirrorless cameras that I've owned for the last 6 years. Last camera I had to ditch because of dust was a Canon S90 and the one before that was the 5D mk1.
Build wise I've dropped both an A6000 and an A7R onto concrete/tiled floors. The A7r bounced down the stairs and then the tiled floor. I was sure that the sensor would have been cracked. Nope, a few scuffs and the battery catch pinged off. Battery door still shuts. Not confident in the the weatherproofing but the build seems fine. The replacement models should be even better put together.

But even if you look at the examples between the 3 cams in the video, the canon has slighlty more pleasing colors even in raw. I know it's subjective but it's just like that. I think the problem with sony's is that they have a slight green cast which is bad for portraits. Canon's have a slight magenta cast and that complements the skins in a way. Maybe a little magenta bias on a sony in raw would make it look better.

Ive owned mirrorless cameras since the Panasonic GF-1. I Moved to Fuji then to Sony when the original A7 came out. I've cleaned a total of two sensors in that time. I use my newer A7 ll almost everyday. I've did a light cleaning once because of poor multitasking while changing lenses. Not sure if everyone knows to ensure the camera is turned off when changing lenses. If not, it literally sucks dust onto the sensor.
    Great review.

Great review. Articulate and speaks to virtually all the points a working pro would be concerned with. I tried switching from my Canon gear to the A7 system last year around this time and though I liked certain aspects of the Sony (mainly the EVF and the dynamic range of the A7r II especially,) the lack of glass, lack of dual slots and battery life plus, at the time, still not-there-yet abilities of AF adapters made it a no-go for everyday, reliable gear. But I still so very much wanted it to work. Fast forward to the A9 (and the A7r III) and it's (almost) all good.
I'm a prime shooter and now shoot all Sigma Art glass with MC-11 adapters on an A9 and an A7r III. My Flashpoint/Godox OCF gear works perfectly manually and with HSS to boot. Plus, a HUGE deal and something that really has been a cornerstone of the switch for me is the ability to shoot silently. I shoot a lot of live performance, readings, some corporate meetings and the ability to shoot with nary a peep from the camera is invaluable. I'll likely pick up the Sony 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 just to have the reassurance of native glass and for some added flexibility.
All in all, having made the switch 2 months ago and shot @ 20 jobs with it, I couldn't be happier. I miss nothing about the Canon gear (which I was really rather fine with, but this is just, well, better.) Having shot Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and Leica over the last 10 years, I can say without a doubt that this setup clicks the most boxes for me thus far.
Thanks again for the insightful, informative review. It helped greatly in my decision-making.

Usually as far as sensor dust goes, dslr's have dust problems also. The advantage to mirrorless as far as sensor dust goes is that the sensor is easily accessible for cleaning. Usually a few puffs of air while changing lenses eliminates this problem. I also try to keep a sensor brush handy. One or two swipes usually removes any stubborn dust.

Cak I own both. I disagree lol video quality is much better in a9 and auto focus is just unbelievably faster and captures subjects much faster. Don't get me wrong, my 1dxmark2 is good but it's not as fast as my a9. The only thing 1dxm2 is better at is menu options and battery life and ergonomics. However if I have to judge the two based purely on raw power of video and photo, I'd give the edge to my a9 over my 1dxm2. It's like comparing titan x vs gtx1080.

Another great review. I totally agree with you on the nits: Sony have really listened to their customers and massively improved the new body over the previous designs, but there are still some issues and you highlighted all mine: the ergonomics still aren't quite there when compared to a Canon body. Maybe this is more down to muscle memory and being intimately familiar where the controls are and how they work, but the more I use Sonys and the muscle memory shifts, I'm still left feeling that the ergonomics still aren't there. This is especially true when you're using the camera in a fast-moving environment where you're shifting quickly between landscape and portrait and moving focus points and changing settings. The A9 is far, far better than previous iterations for changing focus points, but given how awful the A7 is, this isn't saying much. Luckily eye focus is generally excellent.
The really big downside which affects all mirrorless cameras is the exposure of the sensor to the elements when you're changing lenses. Surely the shutter could be closed for the duration that the lens is off the camera. Anyway, I hate cleaning the sensor and the design makes it much more likely I will have to. The only real solution is to have a small number of lenses and a body for each one!
Finally, the lack of S-Log etc. is a real disappointment. Maybe Sony want to drive people towards A7Rii and A7Sii for video, or their pro line of specific-purpose video cameras. But it feels too much like Canon, hobbling functionality in order to force users to spend more money on other bodies, especially when we have had this functionality in the A7 line for years already.

In my cannon, I could create a personalized menu that had every option I always use in one spot. If Sony would just do that, it wouldn't really matter how bad the menu navigation was because once my custom menu was set up, I'd rarely find myself back in the normal maze of menus.

Commend you on the excellent review of the Sony A9. Talking of sensor dust; you must see how the Nikon D610 collects sensor dust, I have cleaned it thrice and still there's a lot. I don't change lenses outdoors and change it at home and then take it out. If I shoot at f/16 I have to spend a good amount of time in LR "heal" ing all those spots. Can you suggest something for this, that said the image quality is excellent.

Thank you for the video. I would like to dissect it for those considering switching from Canon.
Some key points to go over:
    1) "A lot of DR" I've never in my career needed more DR than offered by Canon. If it's a backlit shot that I need a little more detail I underexpose accordingly. Never an issue on the Canon 5D Mk 4.
    2) "Great Noise" Again, with today's sensors I've never scuffed at the digital noise coming from my Mark III or IV. You even say towards the end 7:25 that with the A9 "you have to get the exposure right on" and "but it's very good". So not great?
    3) "Things like S-Log are built into it" If your a professional and you don't send you camera to Canon at least once a year for a clean and check(CPS members can I get a what, what!!!) you should also have them add the C-log for $100. Especially if you shoot video occasionally.
    4) "extremely sharp 4K" I'm a photographer, not a video dude. So this has no effect on me. And honestly, if your shooting video professionally, gets a system setup for video. Legit video production crews aren't using a Sony for there latest work, but I'm sure they think it's cute.
    5) "tons of feature everybody else is leaving out" Features I've never felt lacking. It's like getting a car with all the bells and whistles when you're totally fine with the base or even mid-level options. 6) White balance "know how to massage it right" You also mentioned making it look good in post. That's sucks, more post-production work.
And the biggest reason you shouldn't switch, the sensor dust problems you mentioned. You said you don't change the lenses as much to combat this issue!?!?! Sensor dust sucks ass and tiptoeing around the use of your camera because of this??? I'm good with sticking to Canon. You wonder if they've taken so long to release a mirrorless camera because of all these issues. Sometimes it might benefit a company not to be first to market with something.

    Hi Tyler,
    I love your videos!
    I'm not a photographer.
I am however looking for a good camera that will help me capture great moments of my family for years to come. I love taking photos but I gotta say I love shooting videos more than taking photos.
I want to get a hybrid that will allow me to get the best of both worlds.
I'm considering Sony A7Rii, but I'm concerned about the auto focus on it which seems to be sub-par? Is this a big issue or is it not that big of a deal especially for someone that is just starting out.
OR should I wait for the Riii (if it's coming out this fall)?
Or is there another camera that you'd recommend that is user friendly, compact and will support both great vids and photos?
    thanks

+Fat Loss Solutions Inc. I definitely wouldn't call the focus subpar, it's better than any other mirrorless I've tried

Tyler Stalman so for an amateur like me shooting my kids riding skateboards and playing soccer it'll be fine? Also should I get the sony 35mm or sigma art 35mm will work just as well? Thank you for the response btw! Appreciate it!
