Doing some research to follow up on this story. I found homeDepot settled the case in March 24, but also put in a new policy where you can request a 2nd valuation if you suspect bias. Sadly Dr Mott passed away in March 2024 before the outcome. I read she gave an 8 hour deposition only days before she died, in a wheelchair, with oxygen and without pain medication to keep a clear mind. What a fantastic lady, to keep pushing for change until the end. What a legacy. RIP Dr Mott and my condolences to the family.

Everyone gets lowballed on their first appraisal selling anything. Cars, watches, electronics, art, etc. I've had plenty of relatives selling homes get lowballed to as little as 40% of the taxable property value of their home.

Correct because an appraiser is giving the market value based on their ability to work the process based on their training, comparable properties available within 6 months and within five miles. Your property could be over built for the area and/or curb appeal in the neighborhood. In my years of underwriting and utilize the reports this has never been a problem.
I am Asian, a Caucasian appraiser gave me a lower price, but then Loandepot gave me a higher price by 20K. The appraiser always gives a very conservative appraisal.
The same thing happened in PG County; however, the black couple had a hard time proving their accusation and took it to the news. It took a white man who lived in the same community, who was given a much higher appraisal of his home (which was exactly rhe same to the black family) to get the appraisal company to listen. He sued, and then the agency put out a BS statement. They finally gave the black couple the right home appraisal worth SMDH. They act like black people should not receive the correct appraisal of their homes. SMDH. And yes, this is definitely a race thing!!
This is ridiculous, these people very obviously kept a beautiful and clean home. I’d understand if the home was filthy and in shambles, but it’s very clear this place was well cared for. I’m looking for what the home looks like, not who lived there before…
My mother has been in real estate since I was born. She told me about this in the 90s when she sold the 1st home that she owned. She took all of our pictures out of the house and made sure to not be present when people came to look at the house. Sadly and as upsetting as it is this is nothing new. I would like to see a story on how white buyers don't want to work with black agents.
It’s interesting because it’s very clear you’re getting and you don’t have to sign the contract. Working with an agent is a very personal thing and if you can’t get along with the person, you should probably not work with them at all. But I would love to see a story on this as well. I had a nightmare story with my first realtor, he didn’t hang up the phone and I heard him talking badly about me. I text him and let him know that I heard it and then I would be looking for a new agent. He let me out of our agreement. The company that I worked with to get financing actually had a suggestion and I worked with this person and he was amazing. I think the part that people don’t get is skin color is not what’s important. It’s the person’s character. But people will never learn it seems.

It's actually illegal to have the appraisal fee based on the appraised value. Appraisal fees are always a negotiated fixed fee. Usually between $700-$1000 for most homes.

As a white person, its easy to see the racial profiling that black people face from law enforcement and thru the supposed judicial system in this country. The disproportionate ethnicity of jail & prison populations make that abundantly clear. Those who are doing this and are getting away with it need to have their feet held to the fire YESTERDAY. If they can't legally justify their actions, the consequences should be swift and severe. Kudos to the couple for publicizing their experience and pursuing justice for what should have been theirs to begin with without having to fight for it: The right to be treated fairly. Appraisals are based on homes sold in area . What were the values used? Were they similar to home? Why use an out of state appraisal company? Go to a local credit union. Need more information . I am a person of color in Hawaii.

It's well known in the industry that you should remove all personal items like family photos and strip down it to neutral basics. Your personal tastes should be cleared out as much as possible. This allows ANYONE to visualize the home with their own perspective. Thus get a quicker sale.

Appraisals are based on homes sold in area . What were the values used? Were they similar to home? Why use an out of state appraisal company? Go to a local credit union. Need more information . I am a person of color in Hawaii.

It's well known in the industry that you should remove all personal items like family photos and strip down it to neutral basics. Your personal tastes should be cleared out as much as possible. This allows ANYONE to visualize the home with their own perspective. Thus get a quicker sale.

Focusing on the universality of Evil shifts the focus to morality not to legislative and societal strategies to end a systemic bias problem in a given area; e.g. it is the scientifically proven disparity between what white homeowners vs black homeowners receive when selling their homes.

Freedom of speech should allow the use of racial factors to incorporate into an appraisal based on real statistical data. Meaning i believe thier race lowered the value.
