Wished we could have had episode 3 of Sindhu Bhairavi classicsm extended. As the sea waves rise and greet the moon on every pournami, Jannal oram episodes always create mystique effects on my thoughts, mood and emotions. I have noticed myself becoming entranced like a transfixed bee in the air who has noticed a field full of clover flowers as Mr. Guru Charan presents every episode. The episodes infuse joy like the vision of a thousand million yellow monarch butterflies flying over a valley of fresh summer blooms. The episode announcements even bring the pleasant thrill of the sounds of thunder rumbling from far off mountains and deep forests bringing the promise of heavy showers.
Some episodes feel like we are sitting by the dazzling warmth of a campfire on a cold wintery night, enjoying the bright red-orange flames blazing higher and higher as Guru Charan sings and sometimes we can even feel the deeply intoxicating fumes of burning wood as he touches certain specific information in the theme / movie/ the visual scene / audio song/ sound track/ bgm as he sings in coherence.
Many episodes are as divine as a warn cup of tea prepared by our mother on a feverish day when we hardly have the energy to get up and face the world... Having said this much - Sikkil Guru Charan avgl himself knows better why am requesting episode 3. Or may be since Jannal oram is so close to my heart I feel like a 7 year old kid in a giant wheel merry-go-round asking "avlo dhaana - innoru round polama" on a very enthusiastic, childish note...

Sir, honestaa share panrane... naan oru sindhu neenga paada aarambichadhum, i was stunned a bit...andha song chitra ma'am voice la mattum dhaan feel panna mudiyum.. first time listening in a male voice, the pathos of suhasini character was felt 1% less intense. As you started delving deeper like thanni thotti song analysis, I wished deep at heart - what if someone sings the songs of this movie fully in swaras... lo and behold! Arahonathlaye sarali varisai idea was really great idea. When you touched that sa ri ga sa ri ga bit within kalaivaniye, believe me, I really wanted to share something with you... i didnt know what to share online except a zillion thanks to you. Every scene, every frame in this movie is tightly stitched to make a beautiful sculpture... Ilayaraja Sir kitterndhu evlo extract panna mudiyumo avlo panni irukkaar K. B. Sir. If all of Ilayaraja Sirs songs from all the movies ever are kept in a tharasu on one side and Sindhu theme/ bgm is kept on the other side, i think the latter would go down effortlessly. I generally sit and decode songs theoretically. Aanaa neenga adha analyse senju apram paadiyum kaamichadhunalaa naan romba sandhoshamaa irukkane... kodaana kodi nandrigal. 🙏

Forgot to mention... the layering of violins decoded along with demo and the decoding of veena bit was heavenly. I really dont know whom to appreciate - God or Sindhu Bhairavi ragam or the movie stakeholders or Ilayaraja or people who do such amazing analysis...!!! Part 3 is also needed, sir. Indha bgms analyse pannamaa vittutaa epdi? Bhairavi kozhandhaikkaga malai kovilla anga pradakshanam music, finally kozhandhaya accept pannum podhu irukkra music... how ilayaraja knows how a woman longing for years to get pregnant would feel and bring that out in music... chanceless!

I grew up listening to Ilayaraja sir s music and i still listen to all his songs every day.. his brilliance in using carnatic ragas are mind-blowing and can't imagine how he could do such things.. one thing I want to highlight in Mari Mari song - in second charanam he used a very quick portion of thodi.. "sonnadhu thappa thappa".. thanks so much sir for your nuances.. very happy to listen to such videos..to wat i remember i watched this movie more than 50 times and everytime i watch i only look for such raga based nuances.. i feel very glad to say am one of the die hard fan of Ilayaraja..

Incredible Ilaiyaraaja! Your videos on movie Sindhu Bairavi’s music are two volumes of Carnatic music encyclopedia. Unbelievable to know how many innovations Ilaiyaraaja has used in Carnatic ragas and its swaras with such amazing ease and speed in his compositions. Ilaiyaraaja must be Sir Thyagarajar of flim music. I really wish the knowledgeable Carnatic musicians like you have a conversation with Ilaiyaraaja and make him talk about his inimitable uses and innovations of Carnatic music in his film compositions. Ilaiyaraaja never opens his mouth to talk anything about the intricate work of Carnatic base of his film music. The genius in Ilaiyaraaja needs to be explored more whilst he is living with us.

Once again brilliant analysis. Amazing to know how Raja has used graha bhedam in Kalyani to transform into sindhubhairavi. This is also a great example of a good story/situations that can inspire a composer to come up with such great and unique music.
It is not normal to expect a brilliant transition from Kalyani to sindhubhairavi unless the story demands/ inspires such transformation.
Hats off to Raja, KB and of course to Sikkil for bringing us such nuances without much sikkal 🙏

Oh! What a joy! This movie has bothered (in an extremely positive way) for years. I am just an ordinary commoner. But a lover of Karnatic. With amma, akka everyone singing, there is an inherent initiation into the world of classical music. But the nuances and genius of the director, the writer, the composer and the singer come together with the extra-ordinary abilities of a photographer (video) and the editor. Of course, the actors bring life to the combination. The "vaachaam-agOchara" experience is what I had been struggling to explain to anyone. You, Sir, with your great voice, superb knowledge of music and excellent language bring about a thoroughly enjoyable analysis. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Like the movie that has stayed in the hearts for over 25+ years, your analysis will be part of the movie for all lovers of movies and music like me.
One small addition to the repertoire of information (from my own reading) - the fisherman part is somewhat a copy of a section from Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" where Hank Rearden creates a new metal that is beyond the strengths of normal metal. They make a chain out of it. His wife refuses to wear it (comparable to Bhairavi). The one who understands the value of it is Dagny Taggart who is comparable to Sindhu in some sense. ( Similes / Upamaas are not supposed to full but only a particular virtue). When I watched the reactions of Bhairavi and Sindhu to the sangumaalai that the fisherman gives, this came to my mind.
    AGAIN, A BIG THANK YOU.

Superb analysis. Thank you. With bated breath, I was waiting for your exposition on KanakAngi (?)….let me share my thoughts which I had shared it with some of my friends few years back.
There is a song situation in the movie *Sindhu Bhairavi*. The protagonist is torn between lust and his music career and he struggles to get out of the mire. He decides to shrug his thought by indulging in music.
In Carnatic music, Ragam Tanam Pallavi is a popular presentation where the artiste picks up a raga, improvises it with aalap, then sings a short Pallavi based on that raga which is usually based on a particular deity after singing taanam. Taanam is an interesting portion of the RTP and is the rhythmic version of the raga aalap. In Kerala there is a practice of percussionists accompanying the taanam portion too. It sets the phase for the Pallavi presentation.
For this situation Raaja composes a tune in a “taanam” style. And the raga he chose is KanakAngi, a road less travelled even in Carnatic music. Why he chose kanakAngi? Perhaps this is the first melakartha raga and the protagonist wanted to delve deep in to all melakarthas starting from KanakAngi to get rid of the bad thoughts that come in his way. But he fails in his attempt, his toxic thoughts prevail and his Tanpura string gets cut before he could finish KanakAngi. Raaja used similar idea of choosing a melakartha to convey the emotions in a particular scene and how it culminates to a climax. In movie Naan Kadavul he chose raga Rasikapriya for the melting song “kannil paarvai pona podhum”.
Probably he chose Rasikapriya because it is the 72nd melakartha, the last one, alluding that this is the last hope of the poor blind lady who struggled right through her life.

Pranams Sikkil Sir. My sangu maalai would be Sashtanga Namaskaram to you Sir.
Genius touch - Kalaivaniye explained in a Carnatic way with sarali varisai. This further emphasizes your efforts to provide something new which others have not given
Humble suggestion - thom thom thom tha nantha thom, moham ennum theeyil en manam was touched in your prior thanam episode, could have been detailed in this episode adding Kanakangi vivadhi ragam details
We sincerely hope this continues amidst your busy Carnatic singing schedule into a full fledged worldwide concert. And hopefully Ilaiyaraja Sir comes with a statement of praise for you Sir as he did for Ranjani Gayathri in that concert.

Thank you again for a wonderful episode ! I always felt that only a very small percentage of the intended music by the artist reaches the audience. You have helped close that gap today. This might apply to your music too. I don’t think the audience and the artist will be at the same level. It also can’t be far apart. Your analysis as usual is great. There is one scene early in the movie where JKB comes in search of Bairavi and she will be bathing the little kids. There is a small snippet of music there that has never left my head. Overall, your explanation is very good. We need more and more of LecDems to bridge the gap. Keep it coming

Great that someone like you did it. Not a Tamilian but I enjoyed the proceedings.
You explained it with all the demonstrations as if everything happened so easily & automatically. Perhaps they didn't. Music was just a part of the movie. Imagine those brainstorming sessions that would have happened amongst KB, Raja, the lyricists & the actual artists who would live those emotions on screen. Very complex indeed. Even with all your knowledge of musical analytics, you may not be able to re create a "Sindhubhairavi- like" product. That's when we approach "whole is not equal to merely the sum of it's parts"
Good work. Keep up. Please do concentrate on other related departments also while highlighting "music" & saying this with all love & devotion to Music
