Love a good diagnostic / problem solving video like this! Half the battle is following a logical process and testing! As Eric O from South Main Auto says, "We don't guess...we test!".
This is a great video because some of us out here, we don't know about these things. At all! I feel like I just went to class! Great job on the persistence and finding a cause!
Hey guys fyi My sled is running real nice The aftermarket CDI I purchased for $200 you where right piece of junk With no warranty Had the carbs done professionally and put a used CDI on it and a few minor adjustments and wow she just rocks again Can’t wait for snow next year Thanks for all the input and your channel rocks !!!!!!!!
I know the pain.. I changed everything.. just to find out it was in the stator.. even rebuilt my top end.. I was screaming stator though this whole video..
You should go to vintagesnow (dot) com and download the 1985-1995 Polaris service manual. Chapter 4 is electrical. Look it up by the wire colors to see what it does. You could replace the coil if you can find just a coil, but XLT parts are cheap and easy to find so I'd probably just get a whole good stator.
Electrical problems suck sometimes. I work on Industrial molding machines and intermittent problems are the worst. You have a good grasp on this thankfully and hopefully Details Dennis gets to ride without problems this year! Happy dance was kinds subdued but the shit eating grin on Dennis's face made up for it. Lol
I resurrecting my old xlt drag sled. I've got 4g in the motor. Years ago approaching 200 yard water skip she died. No spark.... died 100 yards b4 the water. Little happy dance she still had compression. 20 years later I'm still trying to figure this no spark thing. Motors on the bench. Thank you. I'll keep you posted.
Hi, I have a 97 XLT, and I keep burning out my cdi boxes?? I'm thinking maybe a stator problem or voltage regulator... I have a cdi box from SPI, but it won't allow the motor to go above 5500 rpm. I then put a used stock one in, and the machine rips! When I shut the sled off and go to start it again, there is no spark. Install the spi box again, and it starts right up??? Please help me? Put the meter on ohms to check the coils. I'm not sure about how the new stator will be, I haven't seen stators for sale. Just the pickup coils. If it was me I'd fix it myself, but if you aren't great with electronics maybe a shop is a better answer?

Go to vintagesnow(dot)com and download the 1985-1995 snowmobile master repair manual. The electrical section has more details than I can type in a reply. As far as your meter goes, there are a ton of videos on how to use a voltemeter for beginners. I'm sure you will learn a ton from those videos. I'm not sure about those aftermarket CDIs. Dennis ended up returning his because the sled wouldn't run right. We have another factory CDI in it now.

So I'm checking out a Bombardier rotax377 for a friend ,when I disconnect the harness from the magnito I get spark and the engine starts ,so I'm wondering what could cause it not to run when the harness is connected,I bridge the stop switch on the handle bar and Thiers a kill ßwitch on the dash,I bridge that also bit still no start ,from the engine I have a black with yellow wire ,witch I think is the magnito wire o have yellow with and a yellow and also a brown wire and a black wire ,I'm not sure what's next
Most snowmobiles need ground to kill the spark. Something in the harness, kill switch or ignition switch is grounding out the wire to magneto. disconnect your switches and if it's still grounding out look at the harness.
@@rohanboswell5408 I don't really know Ski Doos that well, but there is an easy way to tell - if you short that wire to ground and it kills the spark it's the kill wire. There's another really good channel for Ski Doos called Matt's Workshop. It's worth checking out. Tell Matt I sent you.
If you lost spark to ALL cylinders there is no need to check individual components such as coils , plug caps , etc . Start with something that affects the spark to all cylinders such as the ignition switch , throttle safety switch , kill switch , CDI , then go inside the flywheel to the stator assembly .
Except the coils are daisy chained together on an XLT or Indy 650 so if one goes bad it can kill the spark to all of them. XLTs and Indy 650s spark all 3 plugs at once, 3 times per revolution. Ultra and Storm are independent.

Did you find the XLT video where we added the ground wire? Put it back to stock and try adding that ground wire. We had the same problem with SPI box.
Is there a way to test the cdi box? I have this same sled.
Not directly. If everything else is good then try a different box and if that fixes it you know what the problem is.
