Ah I love Chartres so much, first time I traveled over seas when I was a teenager was to there and Paris. climbed to the top of the cathedral to see the beautiful view and then had my first croque-monsieur just around the corner in a hole in the wall cafe. such great memories
Medieval lives weren't all that dark and dreary. They had an incredible number of holidays back then. We make do with about 10, they had more like 40 or 50! They didn't have TV or the internet or a lot of knowledge readily available in libraries, but they had traveling troubadours who regaled them with fantastic stories of other lands, and "historical" tales of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. They didn't have a scientific explanation for everything, so they had a lot more miracles in their lives. Frankly, their fantasies were far more entertaining than our mind-numbing reality shows. The worst thing they had to put up with was the poor healthcare. Nowadays, even if our healthcare system was overwhelmed by a plague it is doubtful that we would lose a third of the population to it like they did. We would quickly find ways of diagnosing it and isolating those affected and finding the best treatment for them. We would not waste a lot of time with ineffective treatments like bleeding with leeches. On the other hand, those that survived inherited lots of land and houses other assets and got freedom from oppressive servitude due to the resulting labor shortages.
How can someone who has travelled as much as Rick Steves has still hold to the myth that the Middle Ages was "dark and dreary?" Compared to the intelligence even of their house wives, who would stand around and discuss theology and philosophy, our world looks "dark and dreary!" What can our "housewives" talk about? Their latest botox? Nail polish? Shopping? "Desperate Housewives?" Imagine a modern housewife talking philosophy in the hair salon! Maybe 1000 years from now, someone will say, "Well, a thousand years ago, at least people had Rick Steves to inspire them to live their dark and dreary modern lives with hope...that they might get a two week break to do something more than think about their cell phones and shopping malls, and reach back to an era where people had more depth!" They may have been illiterate in those days, but they were smarter than most modern people who live in an era of information, are literate, and yet often only think about things like tweets and Facebook posts.
I've been there, very nice. And not far from the cathedrale, in the city, there's an other Church; older than the cathedrale, around 900 years old roman style Church with nice paintings of that time.
Hello . This is not Notre-Dame de Paris . Chartres's Cathédrale is fine at the moment , But i feel bad for Notre Dame de Paris . Make me realize that's i'm Lucky to see Chartres Cathédrale everyday .

I was just going to ask the same thing. Clearly, they were better craftsmen by far.

The Angels on Mary's bed were headless?
Ah, the fastest built cathedral all thanks to sweet sweet indulgences.
😉 But we have that non-Vicar of Christ woke pope today!
Stained glass windows were not bibles for the poor. The windows are too high for such instructions. Rather the light itself was a sacramental.
But...what about the Sacred Crocodile?
I want his job
Europeans will name their cities just about anything I guess
I can’t believe it’s on fire right now
