  • In this week's guitar lesson we’re working on playing a 'one-four' progression ANYWHERE on the neck with my caged chord practice exercise.
The first benefit of this is to help develop the strength and dexterity in your fretting hand. The ‘forward’ CAGED chords aren’t too demanding (E-shape, A-shape, and D-shape), but the ‘backward’ caged chords are a lot more demanding (G-shape and C-shape). This is a great barre chords exercise testing you on all 5 of the CAGED chord shapes.
In doing this caged chords exercise you’ll be developing your ability to play a caged chord progression confidently in one area of the fretboard, without any unnecessary movement or relying on the same barre chord shapes.
This is also HUGE for your lead playing as you can superimpose lead guitar layers (arpeggios, pentatonic and diatonic scales) over CAGED barre chord forms. So, if you can ‘see’ the caged chord shape it’ll be a big help for chord tone soloing and hitting those sweet notes.
A I-IV progression is one of the most common in popular music so you need to have it down! It also ensures that we work exclusively with CAGED major chord forms for the exercise.
To help anticipate the next chord shape you can work from the fretboard and learn the movement of the Root notes. A fourth above is found in the same fret on the string physically below (towards the floor).
As the Root arrives on string 3(G) you’ll take your vision back down to string 6(E) with the G-shape. After the C-shape you will return to the E-shape and the sequence repeats…except everything is one fret higher.
You can also relate the chord shapes to the Circle of Fifths. Moving counter-clockwise around the circle will be ascending fourths.
The CAGED chords follow around the circle from E at the 4 o’clock position (E-A-D-G-C). After the C-shape, you return back to E and the sequence repeats…again with everything one fret higher.
For the exercise, I recommend adopting the inversion of the D-shape major chord, in which you fret the third of the chord on string 6(E).
Once you have the chord shapes clean and can play a few rounds up the neck in free time, you should try to work to a metronome to see if you can speed up your chord changes.
You can also develop your chord vision by experimenting with the chord shapes. From each root note on the fretboard, you can form a chord shape either towards the body (forward) or towards the headstock (backward). For example, from a Root note on string 5(A) you could either form the A-shape major chord or the C-shape major chord.

Hey Ry. I've been following all of your recent videos and I'm really enjoying them. There arent a lot of channels that cater to what I would call the advanced intermediate player. I have so many adult students that have been playing for 30 years and are stuck in the pentatonic or major scale rut. Caged is the best way to learn how to chord tone solo and be more creative with chord choices. I also admire the fact that you've stuck with your passion rather than pandering for views. And of course, you continue to have the best on screen graphics of any guitar instruction channel. Thanks for all of your hard work. Mark

Thank you Mark. I appreciate the kind words and your support. Views aren't where I'd like them to be but, fingers crossed, things might pick up a little more in 2022. Hope you're well.

Ry Thank you for the private video lesson a week or so ago. Well worth the money. I bought “CAGED Blueprint” later. And the commenter said it - best graphics/ instruction on UA-cam are from Naylor. Thank you again

Thanks Doug. I saw that you signed up for 'Guitar Blueprint'. I'm excited to hear what you think of it. I think it will really help you develop the ideas we discussed during the lesson.

I've been watching his videos but they're very confusing and for advanced players I think.
