Pretty much none of our native plants have spikes, because we didn’t have mammals that would eat them, therefore no spiky defense needed. All those spiky ones are a pain in the a**.
sorry to be a wowser but we spend a lot of time rescuing foreign waka paddlers from themselves this is Autumn/winter in Southern NZ where it snows heavy rains hard and freezes muchly all the time dont do these walks in June and July folks you could die and people do

I think the trees with thorns are Hawthorn trees
Not sure if they’re classified as a pest plant down there, but in the Auckland region they certainly are.
Hawthorn berries look yummy 😆

As much hiking that you guys do, why not wear hiking boots that will also keep your feet warm and dry?
Never really needed it in Aus, and we don’t normally hike in the rain. But yes after a few hikes now, I can see how they can be game changing.
