I Played a Forgotten Lego Game | Lego Rock Raiders (PC) Review

- Lego Rock Raiders is a 1999 Lego RTS game from Data Design Interactive, and is often called their 'only good game.' Which may come as a surprise since Rock Raiders released to mixed reviews and ended up being lost to the waste bin of history.
But while adults in 1999 mostly dismissed this game, the kids who loved it have grown up and created a SURPRISINGLY active community around keeping it alive. The efforts continue into the modern day, be it through mods or the 2019 project, Manic Miners, that intends to fully remake and improve upon the game.

if god is so good, why did he let my rock raiders cd break?
Do you can discover more enjoyable things to do. 😉
Because it was a symptom of the patriarchy
Character development
Heard of backing up ur CDs? I made a copy that I kept and I'm glad I did cuz my disk broke just shot after. Maybe it was programmed to break!?
I can only speak from my own religious understanding of "God's will" but it's likely that, in a past life, you broke some one else's Rock Raider's CD.
Hearing "An energy crystal HAS BEEN FOUND!" for the first time in over two decades in that same low bit rate voice was like a 12 gauge blast of dopamine.
Hi, voice of Sparks in the Manic Miners remake here.
Great video, this always was my favorite game.
03:49 "The PS4 version" man that was one hell of a delay between ports.
He says ps4 a few times. Maybe its a joke?
@@phoenixvance6642 I think it's just a case where he had said PS4 so many times in reference to the Playstation in modern day that he instinctively just called the Playstation port the PS4 version.
Man LEGO would make BANK if they remade this today. It has so many aspects that are so popular right now, especially with the base building and the nostalgia would hit hard.
A rock raiders survival/strategy game would actually be so so so so so so fun
@@justicegutierrez6847 Perhaps with a crossover with Deep Rock Galactic?
It WAS remade. A guy called Baraklava remade the game in unreal engine 5. It has been playable for a few years now with the main release beeing over a year ago.
Just look for "Lego Manic Miners".
He even got the permission from Lego (They don't care about the game anymore) and even the originial composer, who even contributed a few new tracks I believe
Maniac Miners is as close as we are getting
A note on studs vs ore: Studs are always worth 5 ore each, but with a fully upgraded refinery, you only need 2 ore to make a stud. So if you fully upgrade the refinery, you can more than double your available ore.
There WAS music for this game! 3 tracks, specifically. BUT. You had to have the CD in the drive while you played as I assume the music played directly off the CD. You also had to have the Advanced graphics version of the game installed or the music wouldn't play at all. Source: this was my hyperfixation game as a 10 year old
It did play off the CD! One can put it in a music CD player and the tracks are playable just like that
You also needed that cable to go from the drive into your soundcard. I've "fixed" CDA on many PCs back then and it was always that little cable.
the ps1 version of this game has a BANGER OST
You can't play without the CD.
A frankly awesome game to play when you're a kid. People used to tell me that Dungeon Keeper was similar but nothing really fits the same vibe as this game.
Totally true! Dungeon Keeper is more like a cousin to Rock Raiders. No other game has ever quite been like it!
Maybe aside from Deep Rock Galactic but that’s an FPS
About the construction glitching:
It's caused 99/100 times by vehicles.
Vehicles will always pick up the max they can carry before returning, if a building needs 1 ore, a vehicle might pick up 3. As long as those 2 extra ores stay on the platform it cant be build, can fix it by selecting 1 guy and telling him to go there and pick something up, usually they figure out which can be picked up and which can't on their own.
Edit:
on the topic of studs, Ore picked up is immediately assigned to buildings if one needs it, same with power paths, doesn't matter if the ore is picked up at the toolshed or picked up in the other side of the cave. Upgreading to Stud useage will always make them pick up the materials from the shed or directly from the smelter. It is also why you often see a LOT of ore laying around the toolshed, its spawned for building useage, but never used. So later its picked up, and put down directly so it can "despawn" back into the storage.
25:02 Deep Rock Galactic is *somewhat* close, at least in spirit. And it's also about digging minerals out of the ground.
Me, looking at the "Cuh-rome Cuh-rusha!" and thinking "Yes. Her name is Doretta."
For those about to Rock and Stone, we salute you!
Had to check if anyone else made the link between rock raiders and DRG, Its like two people were given the same idea/theme but had to work separately on it.
5:16 I remember thinking that the wormhole transported the LMS Explorer from the Milky Way Galaxy to the Strawberry Milky Way Galaxy
I vaguely remember this lego mini-ip from when I was subbed to Lego Magazine as a child. Something about cracking into boulders to get that juicy shiny thing inside is fun.
I really like how you admit your biased for the game and even then you’re able to point out it’s numerous flaws and how the game could have been improved. I sadly didn’t play this because it came out before my time (born the year it came out). I really like the art style and a lot of the small details. It’s really too bad that they didn’t have the time to properly flesh this game out (I think the fact they also had to make a radically different PlayStation version adds to this).
I wish that Lego would officially rerelease their old games with quality of life improvements, bug fixes, and new features to increase the longevity of the game. Fortunately there’s fan remakes and projects to resurrect various dead games.
That’s really funny how after doing research into the multimedia stuff you came back with basically nothing because there was no real substance. It’s interesting how Bionicle (favorite Lego them growing up) and Ninjago were able to succeed were most of Lego’s themes bombed out.
Great video! My favorite part was how you had the cat on your shoulder like a parrot😹
I did not expect this game on this heavily D&D game focused channel but i could definetly tell your a fan, my editor batman helped out a lot on Manic Miners and honestly everything he told me about the development of the fan remake makes it feel like such a amazing tale, which is a shame that the coverage of MM was a bit low.
However, i did play through the original before i did Manic Miner, ngl the camera system kinda made me mad, cause i did not like moving withouth keyboard movement and the Minimap movement was kind of akward.
That said since this is around a year old, the game has since fully released with tons of content, maps and campaigns that will definetly challenge players that want a little bit more out of the game.
Still very good review on the old game
I have never felt such a connection with someone I do not know. Holy guacamole everything this man said about this game is 100% my experience as a child. it was the bomb! It was awesome! it was radical dude! I didn’t care if the first person view was not a good way to play the game. It sure as heck was a good way to experience the game. those graphics! chef kiss chef kiss! I grew up playing total annihilation and StarCraft brood war. I know what a good RTS is. didn’t matter. This was heck fun. My only complaint was that you couldn’t save during levels. my parents had a rule that we were only allowed to spend 20 minutes on the computer at a time and when your timer beeped one of your siblings could kick you off. if they were nice they would allow you to spend another 10 minutes but that is about as much grace as you can get. that pretty much caps you out at halfway through the game before the levels are too long to play.
Hmmm i guess i shouldve tried it. I usually bypassed any of the Lego games as i thought they intended more for younger kids and had simpler mechanics.
I might have to look into getting some of them.
@@d.aardent9382 to be fair, the power of nostalgia greatly helps this particular one. It had a lot more good ideas than it had time and budget to see those ideas to their potential.
That being said, the Lego games are typically a lot more clever than they first appear. I question whether Minecraft would be a thing if Lego building games hadn’t of come first. I might be wrong, but I don’t believe so.
yo the physical sets were BALLING oh my GOD
The first tabletop strategy/war game I every played was Legowars. It consisted of a MASSIVE text document someone stuck on AOL in the 90's describing all of the rules and stats needed for a Lego tabletop war game. Sadly, I think it is long lost to time.
So no, I will not argue that Lego is not a tabletop property.
Good gravy, why did I love this video so much. It makes no sense. A review of a game I never heard of. Awesome stuff.
I appreciate the nice and silky quality of your mic. Subbed!
I loved playing Rock Raiders when I was a kid. It was probably a large part of how I became more interested in playing video games in general. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
You should give Manic Miners another go, 1.0 is coming out soon and is coming with four campaigns: Standard (the original, but tweaked and improved), Remastered (overhauled missions with new twists), Baz's Mod (yes, Baz's mod, getting refreshed love) and Classic (the original levels, not tweaked, openly referred to as terrible by Baraklava, but preserved for posterity)
I played it for about an hour for the first time today, it’s freaking great
Warp to now and Baraklava released the 1.0 version of the game that’s basically complete aside from future mod support. Luckily now that I have a stronger computer I’ll be able to play the game. Hopefully the guy adds the various cut creatures and maybe even the PlayStation Rock Whales at some point. Too bad we don’t get games like this anymore.
Thank you for this video, RR is my favourite video game of all time even after all these years and I love seeing it get the attention it deserves.
That hack line got me to subscribe, great video sir. This was my second RTS after StarCraft
my favourite bit added in manic miners is how you can make a customizable crack team of silly little men, i have two robots, a ghost, and a medieval knight and have decided the robots hate each other and are from rival brands
This and Lego island extreme stunts were my games as a kid. So amazingly fun as a kid. Both were terribly coded, horribly buggy games, but man the mechanics were absolutely perfectly designed for children.
So happy to see this! I had this on my mind yesterday and now I am downloading Manic Miners! :)
Just stumbled on this. Very curious if you ever decided to go back and play the final release for Manic Miners. The remastered campaign is incredible in how it made the levels more engaging.
The voiceovers are forever imprinted in my brain. “Dirt!”
“LARGE mobile laser cutter!”
Ahh, the glorious past where things were as they should be and lego characters had mumble dialog in the games.
I played Lego rock raiders when I was 5 or 6 and I’m really glad you acknowledged it’s ease of access to young kids. I love RTS and Rock raiders was my introduction. Thank you for the video
i loved this game as a kid, thank you for the memberberries
This was such an obscure game reference, and was interesting. Loved your greenscreen shenanigans. What about the Lego Island games?
"Little empty headed himbos" is such a perfect way to describe these guys. Despite how frustrating they were to control (From what little I remember since it's been literal decades since I played it myself) I can't help but love em.
The funny thing is i played this game as a kid aswell, and my name is william. So watching this video at times makes it feel like he is narrating this game to me and my experiences as a child.
Love this game. Me and my bro quote the game randomly sometimes.
I'm sure it's because I also played this as a kid, but honestly, this is still the only real-time strategy game that's truly clicked with me on a deeper level. I've tried other ones and I've enjoyed them and everything, but something about Rock Raiders' simplicity-on-the-surface makes it easy to pick up and just get creative with. The objectives still have to be fulfilled, but the way you plan out your base, what you build and when, vehicles and monsters, so on and so forth... as a kid, I had tons of fun just playing the early missions, designing my bases however I wanted, and then just exploring instead of finishing up. I don't really know any other RTS games that take such a chill approach, at least at the start.
Homeworld.
Me, playing Deep Rock Galactic for the first time: "why does this feel like coming home?"
Me reminded of this game and seeing your review: "things make sense if you dig deep enough and far enough."
Was 10 years old when I first played this im 29 now I never forgot, classic game
Not gonna lie, it was kinda fun listening to you talk about a game you loved as a kid.
Kinda sad I’m too late for the DDO thing though
I used to play this game all the time, and I was always wishing there were more "mining" games like it. I had no idea the genre wasn't mining, but real time strategy. To this day I've never played another strategy game even once (besides Pikmin, but i don't know if that counts).
Also it's funny to see that Lego's schtick is mostly intact as far back as '99. Maybe it's a given that you'd go for a tongue in cheek tone with the little yellow plastic men, but most licensed kids games back then oddly played it totally straight. Look at the Army Men games from that era, they're pretty straightforward and sometimes even a little gruesome.
You just made my month, i havent been able to scratch my Rock Raiders itch. Cause i thought it was just gonna die in obscurity cause i didnt find anything. Thank you.
I'm happy to meet a fellow RR rememberer!
Calling all your patrons illiterate is a bold move. Luckily, they can't read this, so they will never know that I fully support your decision.
When you recognize RR Slugger's OST for Rock Raiders in the background
LOVED this game, despite never finishing it, even to this day. This game was HARD.
22:05 I feel like if they had COs implemented, that the extra vehicle models would make more sense
God I wish I could get this to work with Windows 10 but it refuses, spent countless hours on this gem as a child!
I've got my original CD version and tried every conceivable patch going, but to no avail. D:
Edit: Now playing Manic Miners and I'm very pleased! Nigh on perfect remake.
Rock raiders was the first pc game I ever played cause it came with our pc lol
What an incredible first PC game!
This was definitely one of my first, I don't remember what takes the actual title though!
7:12 Noticed that, yeah. Definitely feels like Dungeon Keeper 2, at least in terms of presentation and controls. Which is a good thing, even if overall I don't think I'd ever play a LEGO RTS.
Amazing job with this video! great memories. I just randomly looked up Rock Raiders in UA-cam for some reason. I wanted to do this for like 10 years. I agree with everything except that for the 16:00 description I would add that it is arguably one of the best "features" or characteristics of the game, because it is a very humanizing aspect: forces you to work with a level of chaos close to what a real construction crew/work team would have to deal with on the regular... Ask any PM! It makes the game more realistic! and actually more "fun". I also love the story, kind of reminds me of Alien, I mean, mining in other worlds and then thriving to escape/working with the environment! This should be a movie!! soo cool! this game was so cool!
I remember getting stuck on specific missions. Missions, that even replaying as an adult were rather confusing.
There is something to be said about slimy slugs not being targeted properly, like rock monsters and them ignoring electrofences...
I would add something tho. Energy crystals arent "used" per se. As long as they'renot eaten, they persist, buildings can only drain them, which some maps include recharging options. Meaning that you can cheese out quicker victories by teleporting buildings and vehicles back to space to get your crystals refunded.
I have tried the laser by the by. Both the building and the vehicle ones are not working correctly, either the lasers dont really do anything, are just plain worse than just drilling or the mouse aim is so borked, that I couldnt target the correct walls.
I remember having a reading learning book that had a Rock Raider storyline. Lego came out with a series of reading learning books that covered different stories from Lego Sets.
this was the first game ever that i personally owned and realisticly is the reason i love rts like games to this day
so happy to see the game is still alive to some degree
to bad we will probably never see the game truly come back in any sort of way but hey atleast there are fellow fans out there
there was a flash game like this on their website. it was like, for their new space setting I just hope all of them are not lost media
The aesthetic really reminds me of Startopia.
Game also reminds me of those old army men games.
Oh man, I SO BADLY wanted to get those army men games when I read about them in Nintendo Power
This game is incredible, I just came across a fully fledged fan remake earlier today, look it up!
Dang, I just noticed this video.
I appreciate the more random stuff. I've had an interest in Rock Raiders since Nick on Planet Ripples video involving it, at least... It's just, kind of a really strange theme for Lego, since it's got this strange industrial vibe.
Good stuff, I like the more off-brand content like this too. Just, things that are interesting, haha
Thanks for pointing out Manic Miners to me. I've downloaded it and intend to play it soon.
Really loved the base building in this game when I was a kid. Picked up the Manic Miners remake yesterday morning and I was on it until bedtime. Missed this game. Made Minecraft Steve as one of my raiders. Lol
Thank for the spreading the word of my favorite game ❤❤ ❤, it’s the only game I ever torrented but sadly my old Windows XP pc has stopped working 3 weeks ago, tried getting this to run on my current pc but sadly the old hand me down pc can’t run Manic miner
Wow I loved this game when I was a child. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!!!
7:50 You Can Think Of Lego Rock Raiders As The RTS Prototype Of Games Like Oxygen Not Included.
This was one of my favourite games as a kid. I also owned a lot of rock raiders Lego they really sucked me in
My First RTS As Well And Still Love It To This Day
I only played the PS1 game as a kid. Had no idea there was a pc game and that it was completely different even. This was a cool video to learn more about it.
I would love reviews of the other titles if they happen. As an OG fan of the originals I was afraid they would never see the light of day. Love these games.
I've recreate a basic Rock Raiders clone for a Gamejam, and holy crap was that game ahead of it's time.
I wonder if your opinion in Manic Miners has changed now that they dropped 1.0?
Regardless, a wonderful video. Thank you
the crystal lego piece first appeared in the lego theme aquanauts. where they where chrome silver
I also really liked Lego Alpha Team that came out the next year. It was a Rube Goldberg/The Incredible Machine type of puzzle game but with secret agents instead of a rolling ball or whatever to power your solution.
Masterful video!
I loved this game. One Christmas my brother got it and I got red alert. Both are soo good and made me love strategy games.
you should check out steamworld build, it's a strange mix of a Caesar like city builder mixed with a rock raider like base building/mining/rts thing
This took me back to my childhood, holy shit. I was bad at games then, so now i kinda wanna have at this beast again, and finally beat the damn thing
I hadn't thought about Rock Raiders in years, but this review was hugely nostalgic for me. And then, halfway through, I realized....I still have this game! Now I just need to figure out how to run it....
You can play the remake Manic Miners, which stabilized the original games issues. The 1.0 version released a couple months ago
My childhood! Oh the memories. :,) Nice video and thx! :)
I had a decent pile of the Lego games back when I was younger. Maybe it's time for a nostalgia trip, thanks to pointing me towards an open source community even if I've not had as much ties to Rock Raiders itself.
fucking wild that I just reminiscent on playing this game to friends over discord and went to find footage just to find a new video about it. Yes. Thank you
Fantastic video, glad i found this
Loved this game as a kid, even though it wasn't my first RTS even. That honor, and the honor of my first video game goes to StarCraft, at the ripe old age of 5. Both games were pretty opaque to me as a single digits aged human, but you know what's pretty funny? I think I actually did better with StarCraft than I did with Rock Raiders. Couldn't really tell you why, it probably had to do with that aspect you mentioned a couple times "patience". Thanks for the video and the news (to me) that there's a playable remake of this hidden energy-crystal-shaped gem out there in the wild just waiting for people to go play it.
had this game when i was way too young, didn't grasp rts mechanics at 6 so i never really played the game per se but i think fumbling the tutorial over & over made the rock raiders ip cooler & more mature in my mind. still lego's coolest aesthetic imo
Can you do a similar (shorter) video on the PS1 version and how it differs from the PC version?
I remember rock raiders. I had the PC game as a kid and Lego set. I remember not making it far in the game though.
I grew up playing this game and sunk countless hours into it! It is a BEAST to try and get it to run on modern systems, but it's ultimately doable and worth it in the end.
I can't get the game to run on my system so I can't check. But I think you can make the names display as they're running around? Hitting Spacebar to make statuses pop up also makes names pop up I THINK.
Sounds like all these redundant vehicles and possibly buildings would've been better off as just, skins over the regular things you're going to use. Like the little drill and various skins for it, and the big drill and various skins for it, so you just pick your favourites.
Ten months later, Manic Miners gets its full 1.0 release, and... to be honest, I actually find myself disagreeing with your point about the vehicles and buildings.
Granted, that may just speak to the quality and polish of the remastered campaign, but with how the missions are designed, you actually want to build all of that stuff that you wouldn't otherwise. And it's great! Smelting ore into studs actually makes a huge difference when you're trying to stem the tide of lava flows; the Loader-Dozer and Granite Grinder are much faster and more useful for rubble-clearing and hard drilling; but the Transport Truck is still a solid workhorse, the Small Digger is better for drilling the lesser walls, and the flying vehicles are great (and necessary) for crossing rivers and setting up new outposts.
It's actually kind of a remarkable improvement, considering how my childhood experience with the game was pretty much exactly the same as what you're describing here. It genuinely feels like the full realization of what the game could have been, and the increased/expanded win conditions make the game feel geared much more towards... well, people our age. :u
I sought out videos on this game because I just today fired up my old windows 98 computer and finally beat frozen frenzy. Got all the way to the last level and I’m glad my disk still works
I still have every single rock raider set other than the minifig sets in a box upstairs. I will never get rid of them
Hi from Ukraine, really enjoy your videos, and also happened to play this game, my dad brought it on a pirated disc xD
I remember playing this as a kid, but never getting past the first few levels haha. Still loved it though.
13:07 A Landslide has occurred.
12:29 This was filmed on Frozen Frenzy, wasn't it?
I loved playing this game when I was a kid.
in dungeon keepers 2 you can actually take some of your stronger creatures with you intot he next fungeon, if they don't die there, youc an do it again and keep them...
God the floods of nostalgia hitting me are insane right now
We used to own the PSOne version back in the day and I was really disappointed when I realized that it was an entirely different game from the PC version.
At the time of this post, LEGO will collaborate with D&D to release a detailed set and, possibly, a collectible minifigure series. Maybe you can revisit LEGO later this year.
"Forgotten Lego Game"
It was never forgotten. Especially considering Manic Miners
I was 6 when I played this... Thanks for unlocking a core memory
