Potatoes planted around Feb 24th, here, in N. MS. Plants look GREAT! Just a little yellowing on some bottom leaves. Only a couple of blooms so far. Irish cobbler in a very large fabric pot and Viking potatoes in a 8 x 8 raised in ground bed with some really good soil. Only my 2nd yr growing potatoes. Last yr was a learning experience with only some very tiny potatoes. Looking forward to a great harvest this yr.
I'm only growing Baltic Rose this year, and it's in 15 gallon grow bags. The growth of the plants is spectacular this year. I did amend the "soil" (actually potting mix from last year) with 2 gallons of Soil3 compost before planting my cut potatoes this year. No pest issues, no disease "yet", and they might be a little taller and bushier than yours! Everything I've used the soil3 compost on has been growing like crazy this year. We are slowly getting our old rotten wood raised beds converted to the 17" high Olle metal beds. Filling them with a 40/40 mix of peat moss and soil3 compost, with 10% vermiculite and 10% pearlite added. Makes great "soil" that looks and feels better than any commercial mix I've seen.
I’m in the mountains of western Arkansas, we had a mild start to spring so I planted my potatoes in Feb. indoors, and moved my planters outdoors in early March, and as luck would have it we had a freeze. I covered my planters with plastic covers but the plants were damaged anyway. Now I have potato plants that look like shrubs growing from the planting tubs but with no blooms.
I planted indeterminate potatoes so I could hill for better harvest.
So as usual, I’m not too concerned with blooms, I’m watching the vegetation.
I hope to give an update when I think they’re ready to harvest.
Mine are in 20 gal horse water tubs, big green beautiful! First ever success. First try pack rat took potatoes down included roots and they ate fabric pots! I feed once a week with micronutrients and every other week a fish emulsion….no blooms but here in Arizona desert this is epic!! Really excited for a harvest!!
I have potatoes planted in buckets and containers.
I'm right across the border and my taters are coming along nicely. as well. Some little bug just munched a few little holes in the leaves recently, but they're all still nice and healthy, so I think I'll just let them ride until it's time to harvest. Cheers from N. FL!

We planted in ground 2 rows just over a month ago. We have happy little plants ( knock on wood). We are hoping for a good harvest this year.
I planted about 200 pieces and then we had a massive rain event. It stayed wet for a long time. Only 10 plants made it through. Store bought for us this year.
A very timely video! Here in Tallahassee, I am beginning to see some die back on several varieties. We had numerous blooms a few weeks ago. Thanks again....
My potatoes are doing well. No sign of disease and no bug damage! Planted 6th of March. Lots of nice blooms in the past 3 days.
My potatoes are tall enough now that some actually have started falling over. Thanks for the tip about fertilizer since mine are probably due for some.
I’m in the 90’s this week and still have a over a month 😢. I was three weeks late in planting due to a pipe busting in my wall from the late January freeze All of mine were blooming big time.
I have the opposite issue. I planted mine a month and a half ago if not 2 months ago and none of them have popped up. I also did more in 5 gallon buckets a couple weeks ago. Hopefully those ones will be good for me. I'm in Western WA. Good luck gardening.
@@DanlowMusic idk why they did time up ? How long in the soil ? Did yo water them ?? Not supposed to until they sprout.
@@MarkSmith-qk2rl I'm in Western WA so it rains consistently. Doesn't flood it but it does rain a lot. I've never done in ground. I have done in buckets successfully. Just a bummer going down to the orchard and not having any up.

Here in Central Texas, we have pulled most. But the Sarpo Mira is holding on!
My Huckleberry Gold look like yours and I also have Baltic Rose which make smaller plants. So far this Spring has stayed on the cooler side, which is a pleasure and all of my garden is absolutely cranking.

My pretty potatoes that I told you about a few weeks ago have fell over, a lot of them they are so tall. I live in Northwest Alabama and it has rained for almost 3 weeks straight until this week, it supposed to went to Georgia when it left here, I hope you didn't get it. I need information on what vegetables and herbs to plant together. Do you know where I could find this information? Your help would be appreciated. You give good advice I want to thank you for that. Such a lucky dog. A most wonderful set of gardens. Wish I had an area like that. My town is polluted with PVC fumes from a couple of tankers that were burned here. Anything I get to grow is containers or raised beds.

Way up in zone 5 in the north east we have had so much rain I can’t get my potatoes in and most gardens still haven’t been prepped for season

I will be overjoyed if I get any to harvest. I've had problem after problem this year and went out tonight and the leaf footed bugs were all over one of my plants. Hopefully the bug buster 2 will work on them.
Mine are about 4” tall in Ohio. Just found my giant watermelon seeds I saved from last year! Can’t wait to see how I do this year. Now I know what I did wrong. We had nearly a 60 lb watermelon ( I started late)
I’m doing a few bucket taters. We don’t eat many, so I can them up with some herbs n salt to use all year.
I just put mine in on the weekend here in Southern Ontario. I’m growing Kennebec and a russet type. I enjoyed this episode! I hope it isn’t blight on that second raised bed! I’m looking forward to see your harvest!

My potatoes are chitting now, I will plant them in a couple weeks. my last expected frost date is just before june, with the last weekend in may the traditional time to plant out the garden. I do have some spinach just sprouted this past week outside in pots. sept 20 first frost comes fast so gotta go a little crazy finding places to plant things as most everything has to grow at the same time with limited things able to be sucession planted. I planed a little 4x8 bed for taters but now I got 3 varieties and thinking about where else i can stick some to grow lol.
I attempted to grow mine in fabric grow bags. I’m in zone 10a. I already harvested and got a whopping 6 marble size potatoes and one small potato. That was it for my potatoes! I try every year and that’s about the size of every harvest. I planted in December. I think we just get too hot too soon here. Potatoes obviously do not like the tropics! I always get a good sweet potato harvest though!

Hello. I grow potatoes in 30 liter buckets. They are well drained, they have humus, sheep manure, npk fertilizer, zeolite. I feed them once a week, water them twice a day.Also, it is watered once a week with a liquid fertilizer that I made myself. It is quite hot in summer. Twice a day watering, is it a lot? Beginner. Greeting.
I think once a day should be good.

It can be done, but timing is tricky. I've done it successfully a couple times. But also have had the potatoes rot in the ground several times.
In regards to fertilizing, what exactly are the potatoes needing (when it comes to NPK)? Or is it something else?
A general balance of NPK usually works good.

How do you keep them from flopping all over the place? Is that why you hill them?

Assuming you have nice sprouts on the taters, I've always assumed that it was when you put them in the ground. But I could be wrong.
Ok, so just for something to play with , if I got seed from potato flowers, should I dry them and start them the next year, or go ahead and replant them?
I always seem to leave a few every time I dig , and they come back over and over...raised beds, good drainage

Taters down here in ocala are doing well. Had a really nice eggplant growing (and producing), and this morning I found it wilted and laying down. Any ideas? Crazy. Was a stout healthy large plant and boom BAM! Dead
That can happen with nightshades and even squash. Bacterial wilt can take them down fast, but can't say for certain that was the culprit on yours.

Did you only give them coop gro and agrothrive plus covercrop/chicken tractor poop? Or hit them with some high nitrogen fertilizer too?
These potatoes have only gotten two side-dressings of Coop Gro, plus what we put in the ground at planting. Nothing else. And the chickens haven't been on that plot in a year or so.

Nice Sunglasses, Tater doing okay, not as good as yours. Planted in soil and hilled with 12 inches of oak leaves. I think I going to start planting earlier nest year, mid-late Jan.

You can, but timing is tricky. I've been hit or miss with my fall tater attempts.
Wondering if I am doing something wrong. Hilled taters etc as u have shown us, but my tater plants are 3 - 4ft tall out of the ground. Am i growing plants not potatoes? Noticed some far reaching tubers have small taters on them. started seeing them bend over last few days, yellowing at bottom, so maybe a week or 2 before I pull. In ground March 24th
Sounds like you've got some nice fertile soil. I'd hill them again if you can.
If you get blooms on your potatoes, are you supposed to cut the blooms? I heard somewhere that you should cut the blooms so the energy goes to the potatoes and not the flowers.
I don't think it matters. We just let ours fall off eventually.

I've seen videos of people planting out and growing the seeds from those green fruits. Needless to say what came from the seeds were nothing like the original potatoes, and the plants were like climbing vines. Those people are on the road to developing their own cultivar and with some success and a lot of losses. It seems the plants have very little if any resistance to disease.
Flowers just mean the plants are mature enough to start producing taters.
So you side dress the hilled potatoes but not the non hilled potatoes? That explains the size difference.
No we side-dressed both. For the non-hilled potatoes, we just scratched the fertilizer into the soil. But both received the same amount of fertilizer.
@@LazyDogFarm Just a thought. When you hill, the plant senses that
more energy, as a whole, needs to go to development of roots. Hence, not
necessarily more potatoes as larger sizes of existing potatoes when hilled.
Also, it's the root system that feeds the plant (size) so if working in unison.
Healthier roots, healthier plant. Healthier plant, healthier tubers. The only
difference was hilled, not hilled.
