  • Watch Earth roll by through the perspective of ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst in this six-minute timelapse video from space. Combining 12 500 images taken by Alexander during his six-month Blue Dot mission on the International Space Station this Ultra High Definition video shows the best our beautiful planet has to offer.
Marvel at the auroras, sunrises, clouds, stars, oceans, the Milky Way, the International Space Station, lightning, cities at night, spacecraft and the thin band of atmosphere that protects us from space.
Often while conducting scientific experiments or docking spacecraft Alexander would set cameras to automatically take pictures at regular intervals. Combining these images gives the timelapse effect seen in this video.

Great timelapses, thanks. At about 4:57 a Cygnus spacecraft is released from ISS and accelerates away from ISS. Why does it not start its deorbit burn, rather than going to a higher orbit?

Incredible images! If you are having a bad day and are caught up in the snarl of your daily grind... take a moment to pull back the camera and remember that we all are just little dots floating on a big rock that is tumbling through space. Your concerns will immediately be replaced with the wonder of it all!

While this recording is very nice, such views will be BEYOND AMAZING recorded and experienced in VR. Fairly soon, we will all have the opportunity to "be" on the ISS looking around in space and down at Earth with full depth perception and staggering sense of "presence". Maybe then, more of us will be filled with a sense of awe, wonder, and appreciation for our home in the universe. And maybe maybe, such feelings will spill over into having us contemplate more that there is existence rather than not, and despite hardships, see that we are very fortunate to be here and find greater care and appreciation that we each exist, together, rather than not.

As we reflect on our lives at the end of 2014 and look at our accomplishments, our failures and our lessons learned, let us not forget how much each of us has been enriched by science and technology.
If you're one of the millions of people who get a chance to watch this video and weep at the beauty of it all as I have, consider how fortunate you are to live in a world where science gives us this view of our world.
Then consider all the billions of people on the planet who will never see this beauty. Who will never experience the awe and wonder captured so elegantly in this imagery of the world we all share.
You are truly one of the blessed... and you were blessed by science. You're welcome.

"Des images comme on a rarement l'occasion d'en voir. Le spationaute allemand Alexander Gerst publie sur UA-cam une vidéo de six minutes regroupant plus de 12 000 images de la terre et de la station spatiale internationale (ISS) dans laquelle il a vécu pendant six mois. Sur ces images, on admire aurores boréales, levers de soleil, danses de nuages et autres phénomènes." Sublime !!!

Life is at its most beautiful, when you remove humanity from the equation. An outside observation of this little sphere in the abyss shows such flawless beauty, unspoiled by religion, greed, war or poverty. If only more of us could bear witness to such sights, there'd be a whole lot less to fight about.

;~; That was beautiful.. I've had the dream of going to space since I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. Read every book in my schools library on space cover to cover, always looked at the Apollo 17 "Blue Marble" and would say, "I want to see that one day. Not just a picture, I want to see it with my own two eyes." I'm 18 now, and maybe someday space tourism may exist. I sure hope its in my life time. :')
