- Watch Earth roll by through the perspective of ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst in this six-minute timelapse video from space. Combining 12 500 images taken by Alexander during his six-month Blue Dot mission on the International Space Station this Ultra High Definition video shows the best our beautiful planet has to offer.
Marvel at the auroras, sunrises, clouds, stars, oceans, the Milky Way, the International Space Station, lightning, cities at night, spacecraft and the thin band of atmosphere that protects us from space.
Often while conducting scientific experiments or docking spacecraft Alexander would set cameras to automatically take pictures at regular intervals. Combining these images gives the timelapse effect seen in this video.

Untouched.. Astonishing..
Very nice movie, thank you, European Space Agency, ESA
Are these the plejades on 4:25?
Great timelapses, thanks. At about 4:57 a Cygnus spacecraft is released from ISS and accelerates away from ISS. Why does it not start its deorbit burn, rather than going to a higher orbit?

Thank you Alexander Gerst and Thank you European Space Agency, ESA
Beautiful !! thank you !!

Absolutely gorgeous and breath-taking, by the way!!!
Macabresque Lol Yeah!
Simply brilliant! The part with pod flying off is superb! Stunning.
I can't believe this song is about two hundred thousand minutes. The time lapse makes it sound so much better.
Incredible images! If you are having a bad day and are caught up in the snarl of your daily grind... take a moment to pull back the camera and remember that we all are just little dots floating on a big rock that is tumbling through space. Your concerns will immediately be replaced with the wonder of it all!
Love it!
Beautiful sceneries fro space :-D
Made me cry. How amazing it must be to experience our planet the way astronauts do, and how incredible that they can share this with the rest of us.
4K was choppy and my computer couldn't play it so I dropped it down to 720 and it was still amazing, I can only imagine what it would look like at 4K. Thank ESA and Alexander Gerst for your wonderful work and video.
Mother Earth is of breathtaking beauty !!!
It's so humbling to see our atmosphere in this perspective
Thanks Alexander Gerst. Really, just thank you so much. Your photos and this video approached the Space to us, people who always look the stars in the sky, people growth with sci-fi themed things, people who know that they will never go in that place even is their dream. Thank you.
Thankyou so much for posting this. Lets hope peaceful space exploration both manned and unmanned continues for a long time to come.
When I watched this I was reminded just how beautiful our home in space is, how fragile our existence, and just how determined we seem to be to destroy the only place we have to live.
Wow! My heart is pounding..Thanks Alexander Gerst for sharing such awesome view from above..Mother Earth is the most Beautiful..
The 4K is strong with this one
Pretty much the most beautiful time lapse I have seen. Simply amazing! This is something we can only dream of seeing. I live in northern Norway and see a lot of Aurora, but this is so different.
Wow Thank You Alexander Gerst For Making This!! Simply Awesomeness!!
Absolutely beautiful video.
Wow.. this is amazing! Observing stars from the ISS is pretty much new to me!
Fantastican Video, Mi smo tako mali, cemu ratovi i mrznja medju ljudiima,mi smo svi ISTI...Peace !!!
Hello world! We may have just seen each other in this video!
Not me.
Sorry I missed you...maybe on the next orbit?
Donovan Frost I don't know, I live somewhere here(64° 28′ 50″ N, 76° 41′ 31″ E). It's quite far for ISS, isn't it?
Yamalo-Nenetskiy, Russia?
Donovan Frost Yep. I use "Yamal-Nenets" translation more often, because of Steam and it's translations.
And Siberian regions are pretty big, so I don't think it's enough to say.
6 minutes de rêve, superbe timelapse...
Merci!
I dont understand how 93 can actually dislike that ! Its just pure BEAUTY. Haters...
wow very beautiful, genial thank you
An awesome spectacle of what we'd see if we were able to lay up there as we do here on Earth at night looking up at the stars only here we'd be looking the other way. Enjoyed it immensely thanks!!!
My new favorite video about the ISS
While this recording is very nice, such views will be BEYOND AMAZING recorded and experienced in VR. Fairly soon, we will all have the opportunity to "be" on the ISS looking around in space and down at Earth with full depth perception and staggering sense of "presence". Maybe then, more of us will be filled with a sense of awe, wonder, and appreciation for our home in the universe. And maybe maybe, such feelings will spill over into having us contemplate more that there is existence rather than not, and despite hardships, see that we are very fortunate to be here and find greater care and appreciation that we each exist, together, rather than not.
Confusingly spectacular. Thank you, Alexander.
As we reflect on our lives at the end of 2014 and look at our accomplishments, our failures and our lessons learned, let us not forget how much each of us has been enriched by science and technology.
If you're one of the millions of people who get a chance to watch this video and weep at the beauty of it all as I have, consider how fortunate you are to live in a world where science gives us this view of our world.
Then consider all the billions of people on the planet who will never see this beauty. Who will never experience the awe and wonder captured so elegantly in this imagery of the world we all share.
You are truly one of the blessed... and you were blessed by science. You're welcome.
excellent post Denny. Have a happy New Year!
ty sir. They happen from time to time lol.
Ringing in the New Year with Tequila Sunrises by the fire tonight. \o/
Have a great New Year too bud!
Denard Springle It will be a quiet one for me. The better half and kid are out visiting her parents, so I'll just be kicking back for a while.
Larry Lyons Come on down if you like... the more the merrier ;)
Denard Springle thanks but I'm meeting a friend for flights after work. I can do such tomorrow or Friday though.
"Des images comme on a rarement l'occasion d'en voir. Le spationaute allemand Alexander Gerst publie sur UA-cam une vidéo de six minutes regroupant plus de 12 000 images de la terre et de la station spatiale internationale (ISS) dans laquelle il a vécu pendant six mois. Sur ces images, on admire aurores boréales, levers de soleil, danses de nuages et autres phénomènes." Sublime !!!
Thanks a lot Alexander this is an unforgettable video, greetings from Mexico city
Lovely..just simply lovely..I love astronauts,they are my heroes :)
Many thanks to Alexander Gerst for taking these stunning photos of our little blue dot :D
This is one of the coolest videos I have ever seen.
Never gotten so much continuous goosebumps! :O
That was simply fabulous. Such beautiful picture, made space look like CGI. I thouroughly enjoyed those 6mns. Background tune was enjoyable too. Orbiting through a Aurora Borealis "Are You Kidding Me!?!?!?"
so beautiful. made me cry a bit...
This is beautiful. Our earth.
A video on how these images are made and the work/thoughts behind it? I am just amazed
30 people that thumbs downed this video, don't appreciate the planet earth and all that it has to offer us!!..:) Great video!
It managed to get a tear out of me....It was wonderful :')
absolute pleasure for both eyes and ears , love it
thanks so much guys for such a nice work
and congratulations .
Absolutely breathtaking.
Magnifique et envoûtant !
Une technique remarquable, une esthétique raffinée.
Wow - certainly one of the neatest things to watch on youtube. I love the satellite release at 4:50. Thank you for sharing this!
Wonderful, just wonderful...merry christmas to each and every one of you.
Breathtaking, Yes !!
Stunning! Thanks so much for putting this together. Just breathtaking images!
By god I can see this a thousand times and still be moved.
Thank you, ESA! This is absolutely amazing.
The lightening storms almost look like wars from space. Amazing
I'm instantly amazed.
Beautifully done thank Mr. Gerst
Epicness overload!
Terrific youtube channel! I got a whole bunch out of viewing it.
Simply stunning.
It took me about half an hour to watch this video. Unreal.
Thank you so much for the footage and please do keep up the amazing work!
I can't believe that people disliked this video. The only reason I would dislike it is out of pure jealousy that I can't be in ISS and see this first hand through the windows.
wowww 4:41 London Paris and lightning strikes over Northern Italy and Southern France at 4:43...at 5:25 the Nile River Delta and the Cairo, Egypt metropolis with the "Levant" at the left
Life is at its most beautiful, when you remove humanity from the equation. An outside observation of this little sphere in the abyss shows such flawless beauty, unspoiled by religion, greed, war or poverty. If only more of us could bear witness to such sights, there'd be a whole lot less to fight about.
you are mistaken. we'd simply fight over who gets to bear witness.
Beautiful just stunning footage.
Thanks alot ... nice videos - our planet is so beautiful.
Breathtaking. Why can't we all just get along down there?
Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you Alexander Gerst
and ESA 👍:-D
Beautiful footage. Thank you, ESA. :)
Awesome!! I love the night time shots the best.. :-)
Thank you for creating this for all to see. Mostly I thank Jehovah for creating all these beautiful things that we can appreciate.
Amazing, makes you feel so small.
4k quality photos, seen here on UA-cam, in stunning 360p!
;~; That was beautiful.. I've had the dream of going to space since I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. Read every book in my schools library on space cover to cover, always looked at the Apollo 17 "Blue Marble" and would say, "I want to see that one day. Not just a picture, I want to see it with my own two eyes." I'm 18 now, and maybe someday space tourism may exist. I sure hope its in my life time. :')
So enchanting!! 💜
Absolutely beautiful!
Hey there =) A lot of people have been interested in the tracks that were used in this timelapse. The first track i've not been able to find (but i will), the second is Crazy World - Tarn Remix, however the edit used in this timelapse is a 'no vocal' mix... After a lot of searching i found it and uploaded it for you all to download =) soundcloud.com/sammy-harding/crazy-world-we-are-delirious-no-vocals-tarn-remix-annie-drury
Congrats to Gerst the new commander !
super video! fantastisch!
Is it wrong that I find the movement of the solar panels, arms and other components of the ISS to be the coolest part of this?
*explosion sound* Mind. BLOWN.
Astonishing!
dankeschön :) das macht mir feuchte augen
How can someone dislike this???
Utterly amazing !!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing. Incredibly beautiful... seems just out of a science fiction movie!
Incredible views!!! I want stay there.
Much Obliged. Fantastic!
Brilliant work! So inspiring
This is so incredible!
Wowwwwww i wish I could get to see the world from the top!
I don't know who disliked this. It's real, ISS, and just a timelapse. Thank you for all, keeping this camera online, Alex. And thanks to Russia, remembering of MIR, please join ISS again, Russia, please :)
You are keeping our astronauts to the space, Russia, and keeping them safe back to earth.
Please don't stop the International Space Station, Russia, i please you :)
Come on :)
Mesmerizing.
Picturesque Earth in 6 minutes!
