The present of this old melody and lyrics is composed by the tongues of its all and will never be forgotten by the brains which don`t understand, what the real matter of life is. Time is the present and Future is as exciting as the past with one difference: The one You know, the other one You don`t. That, what is prayed, love and acceptance, grace, kindness is stumped into the swamp of blood, sickness, lies. Maybe it was so, all the time.
I was just thinking yesterday "Why aren't there any real bards anymore?" Sure there's music, but real storytelling not so much. A study on chivalry brought me here and I've learned more of the story of Roland from this song than all that I read.
It's definitely worth your time to check out some other stuff by Rosalind Jehanne. This song is pretty typical for her writing style (which is to say, incredibly good). As for the info that I included in the song notes, unfortunately I ran up against UA-cam's character limit and had to cut the text short. If I remember right, I'd written up another two or three paragraphs that I wasn't able to fit. My Google-fu turned up a bunch of info on this one.
BardMichaelKelly Are you familiar with the Norwegian take on the song of Roland that I've seen around? I can't make out the english text in the videos with lyrics. Definitely will check into more of Jehanne's work, I'm actually learning these songs for my sons.
I recommend Iron Hart (or white hart) albums by Samantha Moore. Theres some good bards performing for SCA and other interesting folk- ya just have to find them. I’m also a fan of neo-folk and filk music... I found an SCA playlist with some good bardic songs but I cannot remember who did the dong about agincourt.
The Song of Roland is one of my favorite medieval tales. Many years did I try to memorize it as a storyteller. I love this song. It does justice to the epic tale.
Help me out here, folks. Why is this song so much wildly more popular than almost everything else on my channel? Seriously, it's over 2 years since I posted it, and it continues to get more views every couple of days than a lot of my vids have seen altogether. Don't get me wrong.. I love that it gets so much attention. I just can't figure out why this song gets all of the love while others don't. Like, even the other Mistress Rosalind song that I've covered, which is one of the more popular ones, doesn't have close to half of the views that Roland has. Thoughts?
I found this looking to show my son the history behind our name, well done sir. Your song takes me back 1243 years to the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. Cheers!
I believe I found your channel through this song. I was looking up The Song of Roland after remembering having heard of it years before. I still think this is one of your best pieces, even though I do like several others. However, I believe the UA-cam algorithm has picked up that this song is related to other versions of The Song of Roland, and the legend of that knight. People searching for his history will bring up searches related to this song. The Fruit of the Yew, by contrast, has significantly less directly related searches. Add that this is an excellent rendition that people would be willing to re-listen to, and you get significant total viewtime on this video, so the algorithm promotes it more, the total viewtime increases ... I think you see the picture.
Most of the views are probably me :D I like it because of the pace and energy of your performance, as well as the progression and completion of the story. My second favourites are Battle of Maldon (great energy but it's not as catchy) and the Fruit of the Yew (which is also a good story but a bit slower)
In the card game Yu-Gi-Oh there are cards based around the story of Roland and Charlamange and i wanted to know the history behind it. Thats how i found this video :D
The Norman French version was sung in the lead-up to the Battle of Hastings. Charlemagne represented William of Normandy. The lyrics feature cameos by Geoffrey of Anjou and Eudon of Brittany, both of whom contributed soldiers for the conquest. Since in history/legend, Oliver, Roland and Turpin all died, the soldiers of the rear-guard (Bretons, Angevins, and men of Maine and Poitou) were expecting to perish. Instead, the way the battle played out, Charlemagne put himself in mortal danger, until wise Oliver (played by Alan Rufus) single-handedly slew half the Moorish vanguard, while Roland (the gung-ho Brian of Brittany, Alan's brother) led the rear-guard to annihilate the rest of it, and Turpin (Odo of Bayeux) rallied the fleeing French (Normans).
For what i've read, only one chronicler of the battle wrote about a trouvere knight named Ivo Taillefer singing the (then only oral version) of the Song of Roland on the eve of the battle, then re-singing it in order to taunt Harold's army, killing two english soldiers, then got killed.

If I'm not mistaken, the Song of Roland is included in the forty great works of western literature, which I expect to have any day now. I'm looking forward to reading it. This version is well done and enjoyable. Of course we know that the story touted by the Song of Roland is a mixture of legend and reality. The foe wasn't actually Muslim but nominally Christian. Ganalon was the villain in reality and had Roland well and truly trapped. The Song of Roland says that Roland blew Oliphant so hard the horn cracked, but Ganalon likely did tell Charlemagne that it was just Roland hunting. Love this take on the Song of Roland, and I listen frequently. WELL DONE!!
You can add that, according to other versions of the story, Roland tried to destroy his sword, Durandal, by hitting a stone with it, wich happened to destroy a mountain, and then he launched his sword to the sanctuary of Rocamadour, hundreds of kilometers away, and the sword can still be seen nowaday. What a chad.
I'm just getting into medieval ballads and this song has quickly become a favourite as I love the story of chivalry and how Roland never surrendered in face of insurmountable foes, just like a legendary hero.
