Welcome to part two of our three part series on preparing your dog for firework season. The Kennel Club reports that during fireworks season, reports of missing dogs increase by 100%.
With a couple of weeks to go, it's important to start thinking about how we can prepare and keep our dogs safe. The first thing you want to do is make sure your dog's microchip is up-to-date.
This is really important as if your dog does escape, it's essential that if anyone picks them up, they can be reunited with you as quickly as possible. It's also important to start thinking about securing your garden.
This give you a little bit of time to prepare so that if you do need to change anything, you have plenty of time to do so. A lot of the time dogs become spooked and escape from gardens so checking things like the security of your fencing and making sure that there's nothing your dog can jump over, like a gate is really, really important. It's also worth doing the same for your house.
If your dog is particularly flighty and nervous, sometimes I recommend setting up baby gates so that if your front door does come open or somebody comes into the house, your dog can't escape out. I also like to start setting up a safe space during this period of time.
This gives your dog a couple of weeks to get used to it. Usually you want this to be somewhere in the middle of the house, away from doors and windows. Sometimes under your dining table can be a really nice spot because it helps them to feel safe and secure.
