If you don't dump the ashes every time you grill they will draw moisture and for sure rust. Also you need to reseason the barrel to stop rust.
I have had mine over 20 years and NO rust.
I replaced the ashtray and put small cast iron grates right on top of the ashtray and DUMP the ashes every time I grill.

How is this redesigned? I'm on my 3rd one in 12 years and it's only gone from wooden side table to metal. The charcoal dumping tray and the bottom of the grill rusts out within a few years in every one. Make that a part of your redesign.
I got a piece of recess aluminum car transporter ramp and replaced that part! Now it’s perfect

I've had mine OVER 20yrs.
I have replaced 1one ash pan.
You need to read the suggestions that says to line the ash tray with aluminum foil and always empty after use because ashes will absorb moisture and therefore rust out.
