- Afternoon walk around Toorak in Autumn 2020. Located around 7km from the Melbourne city center, it is Victoria's wealthiest neighborhood with a median house price of $3.1 million.
This brings back great memories. I grew up in Burnley which is right next to Toorak. I spent a lot of time as a teenager around Heyington where we built a BMX track in the early 80s. And riding through Toorak on my way to Malvern. St George's road is beautiful. I used to take my Mother shopping at Safeway Toorak in the 80s and we used to see Lou Richards in there, you could hear him a mile away. The other thing I miss about those days was in Autumn when they would gather up Brown leaves in the gutters and burn them.

All of Melbourne suburbs are rich in my opinion. A one room flat is out of reach of most people, unless you make 200k or more.

Of course you love it, thats why it has been the worlds best city to live in since 1860 and will remain so. Other great cities are Vienna, Milan, Barcelona, Montreal, Seattle, Singapore, Geneva, Copenhagen, Wellington NZ, Brisbane & Lisbon.

The most disappointing thing about these areas in Melbourne is that the lots are not as big as they need to be if you are dead-set on building a large, luxurious property with character: go to the real estate websites and you'll see that sometimes all you get are a lap pool, a small courtyard and a view of a wall out the window. Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills and Bel Air etc have properties with the most magnificent grounds, which in my view is what you need for the home to 'make sense' and feel well situated and elegant. Sadly, Melbourne's version of the aforementioned 'golden triangle area' just have loads of ambitious new build McMansions ballooning out and taking up almost the entire plot so it just seems claustrophobic and gauche. Really horrible to build homes like that. There's no sense of elegance and proportion, just that vulgar wannabe energy. I know Toorak is regarded as one of the 'old money' areas but compared to homes around the world, Toorak just does not hold up on the whole, there aren't very many grand estates, if you will, in Melbourne. If I wanted to press up against my neighbour's house I'd live in an apartment.

Tbh there are probably richer areas of Melbourne now ,nicer houses ,more open spaces . The only thing going for toorak is it’s proximity to the cbd ,but the area is sooo old even in this video it looks run down .even Brighton looks better than this

Melbourne housing ripped off all vegetation. This is how low middle class toward poverty, looks in world cities . Richness is green space, not roof to roof glued
Not even close, look at London and USA's gridlocked tiny homes and then come back to this video. Toorak smells like money. The homes there are both some of the biggest in the world and are situated on some of the largest "vegetations" in the world.

I agree in the U.S. I live just outside NYC and no houses in top neighborhoods are that close. I lived in homes with one acre of land plus woods. I will have to say everything in these Melbourne videos is neat and tidy. I can not wait to check the city and suburbs out in person but road signs and driving looks a little confusing to an outsider. Definitely will need tour guides, taxis or Uber’s.

And the other thing you need to know from an historical viewpoint is that Melbourne has enjoyed the best standard of living in the southern hemisphere since 1860. It was the worlds richest city from 1860 to 1890. Perth has been placed second for most of that time. Brisbane is now Australias second best city to live in behind Melbourne. If you spend enough time in Melbourne you discover all of this and more. Sports, Arts, Education, Communications, Music, Cuisine, Special events, Comedy shows, Film.......Melbourne has the very best of these. Melbourne is the trsnsport hub of Australia, its also the music capital of the southern hemisphere. It has the largest Port in Australia and the best Airport. The finest Golf courses in the southern hemisphere. The worlds best Tennis complex. The finest Racecourses in the southern hemisphere. The worlds best restaurants and chefs. Australia's best Art gallery. Australia's highest bridge. Tallest buildings in Australia. If you leave Melbourne disappointed I'll be extremely suprised!
@@MrGlenspace Just remember one thing, cost of living is extremely high in Australia compared to the US. And what are you talking about? Houses in US are bigger in most cities. Yes there are a lot of rundown streets, but gentrification can be done.
Big houses, less green area.
But if every house in Toorak had more space with green lawns around it the houses would cost 3 times as much silly!

@@anjanbanerjee4818 Everyone wants space and tranquility however with 9.5 billion humans on earth there's not enough money or nice houses for everyone in the world to live in rich cities. I just went shopping in Norwoid, an affluent area of Adelaide and many houses there have very high fences/walls and security gates with keypad entry only so that mentality is happening all over the world.

@@anjanbanerjee4818 Oh really. Kolkata is the home of Cricket in India. I am so glad India won the Test series against Australia. Sadly the Australians do not display good sportmanship and I have seen many times where it looks like they are cheating. I don't like the sledging. I follow South Africa because they dumped my favourite player Dean Jones in 1994.

@@matthewleening5856 Sad to see the wealthy have to hide behind walls and hedges with all that security. Having enough money seems to be better than having too much. Really sad way to live .

Average? I doubt it. I grew up in a neighbouring suburb and spent lots of time in Toorak. It never disapointed me. Beautiful streets and plenty of trees. always clean. maybe your eyesight is poor.
