I originally wanted them to accept me but the moment I saw their Nasty toxic personality, I went full self defense mode, I didn't need their son protection, permission and forgiveness. Both my late Ex husband and Current husband know My personality told their mom's right in front of both of us "Mom you walked right into that" my current MIL is scared of me just how I like it!
That's why it's so hard to like the protagonist, the writers focus on making the protagonist so kind and will accept that type of behavior like that's what kind and considerate people do, but they don't realize it makes the protagonist weak and pathetic and not relatable.
It makes me angry that in many of these stories they (mostly MIL / husband) are so quick to throw away perfectly fine food just to harass the person who made it - pretending THAT to be the reason for any problem or to ask for a divorce! If YOU don't like it, give it back to the "cook" who says it tastes well. There are endless people having to starve, and the "values" about foodwaste draw a really bad example...
I was disappointed that the FIL actually never corrected his ex wife when she said "it's in a MAN nature to cheat" that would've been the perfect time to say he never cheated on her, and she is a woman so why did she cheat? Also, why did she respect her MIL and allow her to live in her house she wanted both her in-laws to live in? In my opinion, this is the reason to stop being "kind" to people who never consider your feelings. Being a nice person only allow for bar people to target you, it's one thing to respectful and considerate to everyone but once you start to see people for who they really are it's best to protect yourself by not giving into any demands and just get away safely.
Is this story based in Canada or something? They mentioned Hawaii being another country, up until that point I'd have assumed it was based in the US. The accents seemed North American.
