The slime is already nasty to look at. But when you learn that it's meant to clog a fish's gills, it suddenly becomes scary. Talk about a horrific way for a predator to die. Suffocation by slime.
As our guy here said, this has to be the reason this fossil of a fish survived for so many years.
Whats better is, if something tries to eat the hagfish, the hagfish clogs them up then they die. The hagfish then eats them. Talk about alpha male grindset.
@@zerothelightbringer8874 nah that's sigma male levels. "Yeah sure eat me I don't care, but you'll regret it..."
@google slave I don't converse with average reddit commentators.
@@airliner7478 You have to be joking right? "I don't converse with average redditors" Has got to be one of the most reddit user things I have ever heard.
So... does that mean men that have hit puberty can defend themselves against sharks since they can produce gooey stuff that looks very similar to the one produced by this fish?
A close relative of the hagfish can be found in great numbers in the house of parliament and Downing Street, it's a land dwelling variant.
Than trap should be strong
@@LiamDCoughlan the only reason it isn't funny is because it's far too true
@@LiamDCoughlan triggered tory 🤭😂
Must be real invasive we got them all over d.c. here in the u.s.
Actually that relative is an invasive species. They're called politicians.
So since I don’t see other comments discussing it, the defense mechanism is just terrifying. The slime coats the gills of the animals suffocating them. Imagine trying to eat something and having your throat sealed shut with slime. And then imagine being a fish and being unable to pull it out of your gills or clean it off, It’s genuinely horrifying.
To top it off, while you're suffocating, the thing you just swallowed is now eating you from the inside.
Yes, imagine that nice little cut of pork jizzing in your throat till you suffocate as you attempt to eat it. The horror, pure horror.
@@Chaos------ yeah and then it kills you like a chestburster from aliens
I assume it is a slightly worse peanut allergy
Man that's awful! I can't swim!

These are considered a delicacy in Japan and S. Korea. I tried them when I was little. The chef even gave me the head in a bowl to play with...yes, just the head...it was still moving.
@Ggnkrsfkoqxbkusually they grill it on an open fire along with some Korean BBQ sauce. Tastes like Unagi, similar texture.

lol whats not
I've been living in Japan around the Tokyo area for 11 years and never once seen this in any restaurant. Just looked it up and it seems they are eaten on rare occasion in places like Niigata and Nagasaki. They are mainly eaten in Korea.

Hagfish: Looks like coffee addicts who haven't had their coffee.
I think.... 'wine'😂
I feel perdonslly attacked
"Old Snotty" or "Blind Eel". Some people overcome the copious snot by tossing them straight onto a bed of embers. When done the skin peels off and the repulsive things can be eaten. If you're fishing for other fish and pull up one of these, it's best to up anchor and go somewhere else, but if some of the slime gets on the side of your boat, you may as well go home and pressure wash it as it repels other fish.
An archaic creature vs smart monkey
Jeremy: *pulls the trap*
Fleshlite: "did you get that?"

This will make a fine addtion to my fish playlist
Me and my dad often get those hagfishes inside hallow fish in the nets at sea (here in Norway)

I'll have nightmares tonight now ! Hagfishes were featured on Attenboroughs the deep ocean episode of Blue Planet. It took them 2 years to reduce a large sunken dead whale to a skeleton !
0:41 When they cheap out and need to add sound. Thanks for the 90s game nostalgia, I can see the Myst animations now.
love river monsters, keep it up jeremy
That tube fish trap is responsible for so much ocean pollution you cant even believe it. Fisherman just throw away the head part in sea after they are damaged. For more details search in yt for ocean cleaning vids.
These videos are just hilarious... that dramatic drum music combined with the fact that it's just a fish that poses no real threat to human. Was this aimed for the fish living there? They might find this dramatic enough I guess 😂
3:27 this is what happens after "No-nut November".
Hagfish and chips is #1 selling dish in downtown London
You can even find hagfish slime inside gym socks across the world
Thanks recommendations
Jeremy Wade, you're my hero 😎
Thumbnail looks like me in bed at 3am🤣
Scientist actually believe based on a new discovery hagfish traits have been adapted to be what they are not that they have gone unchanged from all that time ago
My mom cleaning my room after NNN
That hagfish water looks like the water in my hot tub
Who you gunna call, Ghostbusters.
Bro that thumbnail got me💀💀💀💀
ahhh, these are the traps that are getting recovered by those ships collecting the garbage in the sea! I wondered what sort of fish it was for
Ooooh so it’s hagfish that Spider-Man gets his web fluid from
Man I remember watching this show like 15 years ago or something with dad in the evenings.
My new spirit animal!
The thumbnail is when you finally survived NNN
That's our President you are handling in your hands Jeremy! Watch it! LOL
I know Im a close relative of hag-fish. In my teens i produced a lot of slime too
Hagfishes are the definition of "sus"
THIS IS MY KINGDOM COME.
I feel like the only problem with his theory is that many of the Cambrian fossils are much more complex than these animals
pikaia and haikouicthys were very simple chordates.
@@lorencalfe6446 what's your point ? I'm saying we have trilobites in the oldest known rock layers of the earth
@@youngpoet44hunnies I am saying hagfish are similar and perhaps slightly more derived than the most basal of vertebrates. Other taxa are irrelevant to the discussion. As he mentioned hagfish were similar to the universal common ancestor of vertebrates.
Cambrian chordates were more primitive than hagfish, other phyla are irrelevant to this discussion which is primarily about fish.
@@youngpoet44hunnies Trilobite ancestors were soft bodied and evolved in the precambrian, they started incorporating calcium into their skin in the cambrian which was when they started leaving fossils.
@@lorencalfe6446 the fact is there are trilobites and other complex animals in the precambrian layers. In light of this fact my opinion is it's stupid to look at contemporary living worm like creatures and speculate this may have been what our ancestors looked like. I'm not sure what your point is I don't necessarily disagree with anything youre saying I'm not even sure how what you're saying pertains to my point. Good day lad
Looks like that time I forgot to clean my fleshlight!
I clicked on this to look at the comments saying how the thumbnail looks like something different😅. But I guess just me😂
"The monsters I'm after don't take bait on a line ..."
Puts bait on a line.
Sir? Sir! Get me that hagfish get me that hagfish!
Feels like that film is in my nose and everytime I blow it out it reproduces that film that makes it hard to breath ughhhh
Could the Hagfish’s slime be the replacement for gluten that used for: bread, pizza, cookies???
Hagfish feast on the victims of shipwrecks. Think about that next time you're eating a fillet o fish.
I know you care a lot about the environment that you live and work in. Those hagfish traps are one of the main ocean trash items. I would love if River Monsters did something about cleaning up rivers and oceans. Similar to what Mark Rober is working on currently.
🤦🏻♂️
First thing you think of when you see this man playing in stuff. You gonna say Is that Fish jizz 😆 😆.
That’s a sign a hagfish likes you. Like in Ace Ventura 2. Bumblebee Tuna.
Someone should make an asmr video with the fish and slime.
This looked like a scene out of the alien movies
