I have a rather lengthy comment to make on this matter and I hope and trust it will be a benefit to all who will read it, so please bear it with me and patiently and prayerfully, read through right to the end. Sadly and with all due respect, I find that both pastors have not clarified the matter regarding the significance of Easter. Pastor Lerefolo spoke well to say that Easter is a holiday of pagan origin. He also said that Christians REDEEMED Easter and now use it to commemorate the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Firstly, the word redeemed means to 'buy back' something that has been lost. Hence we, as Christians, speak of our lost souls being REDEEMED by the blood of Jesus. We were lost on account of our sins but Christ bought us back by this great sacrifice of shedding His blood for us. On what basis and in what way then did we as Christians REDEEM Easter which has pagan origin? I am certainly uncomfortable with this position stated by the pastor. Additionally, from a bible perspective this cannot be correct since Christ Himself said that the Lord's supper is the service through which we remember His sacrifice for us. He also said that we are to do the Lord's supper as often as we can as shown by 1 Cor. 11: 23-25 which reads as follows in the KJV: "23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”" Christ instituted the Lord's supper so that it would take the place of Passover. This is consistent with the biblical truth that all ceremonial laws in the Old Testament pointed to the sacrifice Christ was to make at His first advent (i.e first coming). After Christ made this ultimate sacrifice for mankind, this meant that the Passover would no longer need to be observed i.e. no more lambs needed to be slain, since He the Lamb of God would have made the true and ultimate sacrifice. This is what Colossians 2:14-16 refers to. It says, "16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are A SHADOW OF THINGS TO COME, BUT THE SUBSTANCE IS OF CHRIST. " Jesus then instituted this new service [the Lord's supper] INSTEAD OF THE PASSOVER for Christians to remember His death, burial and resurrection. SPEAKING OF LIBERATION: Through the Lord's supper we also celebrate our liberation from the slavery that ALL MANKIND [black, white, red Indian, Asian, Colored etc..] suffers from. We are ALL slaves of sin for 'ALL have sinned and come short of God's glory' (Romans 3:23). COLONIZATION, RACISM, BIGOTRY, TRIBALISM, NAZISM, ARE ALL A PART OF THE SIN PROBLEM. IT IS A SIN TO KILL SOMEONE. The Bible also tells us that when we hate someone we have the spirit of murder in us and are effectively murderers (see 1 John 3:15)! So what we ALL NEED TO BE SAVED FROM is SIN. It is SIN WHICH IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF ALL THE PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD INCLUDING COLONIZATION AND RACISM WHICH I see Pastor Maponga is speaking so much of! To ALL, regardless of race, creed, nationality, culture or color, is offered salvation full and free through the precious merits of the blood of Christ. We have been bought at a great price which is not of perishable and transitory things like silver or gold but by the blood of Christ (see 1 Peter 1:18,19)! It is LIBERATION FROM SIN THAT WE ARE TO CELEBRATE SINCE JESUS CAME TO 'SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS' [see Matthew 1:21] NOT IN THEIR SINS! By faith in Christ we are able to live holy lives and escape the corruption that is in this world through lust (evil desires). His Word is the one that empowers us to be over-comers! To those who overcome is promised so much which should motivate and encourage every true BIBLE believing, hearer and doer of the Word. This includes: [1] eating of the tree of life (Revelation 2: 7); [2] receiving the hidden manna and a white stone with a new name (Revelation 2: 17); [3] authority over the nations (Revelation 2: 26); [4] white garments and one's name being kept in the book of life (Revelation 3: 5); [5] the overcomer will be a pillar in God's temple i.e. s/he will never depart from God's Presence; [6] sitting with Jesus on His throne (Revelation 3: 21). Revelation 12:11 emphasizes that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony! THIS IS TRUE ESSENCE OF THE LORD'S SUPPER. It has nothing to do with Easter which IS of pagan origin. Our God does not 'baptize' paganism in order to christianize what has to do with the worship of false gods like the goddess of fertility, otherwise known as Ishtar. This can cause confusion to any sincere, honest thinker. Our God is not a God of confusion. If only more of us professed Christians would read God's Word prayerfully and humbly, led by His Spirit. We would thus be able to see as did, Israel Folau, as Australian rugby player of world renown, that celebrating Easter and/or Christmas is not supported or taught by God's Word but is all part of man-made tradition. If we follow man's traditions/teachings which go against what God Himself teaches in His Word, God does NOT accept our worship. He see it as vain [i.e. empty and meaningless] to Him. May we therefore, examine ourselves, fellow Christians, brothers and sisters, and make amends where needed so that we may grab hold of truth. Its the truth that sets us free (John 8:32)! I see two people confused here, in the Bible no where does it say we must keep the Passover in a specific day like in the old covenant, we are commanded to break bread as often as we want it (1Corinthians 11vs23-25). Now this idea of morphing old testament Passover into celebrating Jesus Christ's death on the cross is purely the invention of the Catholic church so to throw in Easter in to the mix. It's not biblical and the moment you do something not commanded in the Bible you are on Satan's territory no matter how sincere you are. If you celebrate the Passover you are judaising and you can't just pick one festival take all of them. The fixed time of Passover feast was never changed. What changed was the sacrifice of animals which Christ fulfilled with His blood and it was replaced with the Breaking of bread which is also to be done at the exact time of passover (once in a year). I have a rather lengthy comment to make on this matter and I hope and trust it will be a benefit to all who will read it, so please bear it with me and patiently and prayerfully, read through right to the end.
Sadly and with all due respect, I find that both pastors have not clarified the matter regarding the significance of Easter. Pastor Lerefolo spoke well to say that Easter is a holiday of pagan origin. He also said that Christians REDEEMED Easter and now use it to commemorate the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Firstly, the word redeemed means to 'buy back' something that has been lost. Hence we, as Christians, speak of our lost souls being REDEEMED by the blood of Jesus. We were lost on account of our sins but Christ bought us back by this great sacrifice of shedding His blood for us. On what basis and in what way then did we as Christians REDEEM Easter which has pagan origin? I am certainly uncomfortable with this position stated by the pastor.
Additionally, from a bible perspective this cannot be correct since Christ Himself said that the Lord's supper is the service through which we remember His sacrifice for us. He also said that we are to do the Lord's supper as often as we can as shown by 1 Cor. 11: 23-25 which reads as follows in the KJV: "23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”" Christ instituted the Lord's supper so that it would take the place of Passover. This is consistent with the biblical truth that all ceremonial laws in the Old Testament pointed to the sacrifice Christ was to make at His first advent (i.e first coming). After Christ made this ultimate sacrifice for mankind, this meant that the Passover would no longer need to be observed i.e. no more lambs needed to be slain, since He the Lamb of God would have made the true and ultimate sacrifice. This is what Colossians 2:14-16 refers to. It says, "16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are A SHADOW OF THINGS TO COME, BUT THE SUBSTANCE IS OF CHRIST. " Jesus then instituted this new service [the Lord's supper] INSTEAD OF THE PASSOVER for Christians to remember His death, burial and resurrection.
SPEAKING OF LIBERATION: Through the Lord's supper we also celebrate our liberation from the slavery that ALL MANKIND [black, white, red Indian, Asian, Colored etc..] suffers from. We are ALL slaves of sin for 'ALL have sinned and come short of God's glory' (Romans 3:23). COLONIZATION, RACISM, BIGOTRY, TRIBALISM, NAZISM, ARE ALL A PART OF THE SIN PROBLEM. IT IS A SIN TO KILL SOMEONE. The Bible also tells us that when we hate someone we have the spirit of murder in us and are effectively murderers (see 1 John 3:15)! So what we ALL NEED TO BE SAVED FROM is SIN. It is SIN WHICH IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF ALL THE PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD INCLUDING COLONIZATION AND RACISM WHICH I see Pastor Maponga is speaking so much of!
To ALL, regardless of race, creed, nationality, culture or color, is offered salvation full and free through the precious merits of the blood of Christ. We have been bought at a great price which is not of perishable and transitory things like silver or gold but by the blood of Christ (see 1 Peter 1:18,19)! It is LIBERATION FROM SIN THAT WE ARE TO CELEBRATE SINCE JESUS CAME TO 'SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS' [see Matthew 1:21] NOT IN THEIR SINS! By faith in Christ we are able to live holy lives and escape the corruption that is in this world through lust (evil desires). His Word is the one that empowers us to be over-comers!
To those who overcome is promised so much which should motivate and encourage every true BIBLE believing, hearer and doer of the Word. This includes: [1] eating of the tree of life (Revelation 2: 7); [2] receiving the hidden manna and a white stone with a new name (Revelation 2: 17); [3] authority over the nations (Revelation 2: 26); [4] white garments and one's name being kept in the book of life (Revelation 3: 5); [5] the overcomer will be a pillar in God's temple i.e. s/he will never depart from God's Presence; [6] sitting with Jesus on His throne (Revelation 3: 21).
Revelation 12:11 emphasizes that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony! THIS IS TRUE ESSENCE OF THE LORD'S SUPPER. It has nothing to do with Easter which IS of pagan origin. Our God does not 'baptize' paganism in order to christianize what has to do with the worship of false gods like the goddess of fertility, otherwise known as Ishtar. This can cause confusion to any sincere, honest thinker. Our God is not a God of confusion. If only more of us professed Christians would read God's Word prayerfully and humbly, led by His Spirit. We would thus be able to see as did, Israel Folau, as Australian rugby player of world renown, that celebrating Easter and/or Christmas is not supported or taught by God's Word but is all part of man-made tradition. We may think that brother Folau is judging other faiths when he here speaks against Roman Catholicism but this is not correct. When we simply reveal what God's Word says and what the Word says exposes other people, professed followers of Christ, as not walking in harmony with God's Word we are not judging! We will simply be pointing out what God's Word says! If anyone feels offended or judged by that, then they are warring against the Word of God and will answer to God Himself for that when He comes to judge us all! May God have mercy on us who claim to believe in God's Word so that we may truly live by it, with all our heart mind and soul, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Jesus pronounced a warning and rebuke on those who exalt man's tradition above the plain teachings of the Word of God in Matthew 15:9 which says, "But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.". If we follow man's traditions/teachings which go against what God Himself teaches in His Word, God does NOT accept our worship. He see it as vain [i.e. empty and meaningless] to Him.
May we therefore, examine ourselves, fellow Christians, brothers and sisters, and make amends where needed so that we may grab hold of truth. Its the truth that sets us free (John 8:32)! This is my humble plea and desire for myself and for us all. I pray that we may all worship God in 'spirit and truth' (John 4:24) so that when He comes we may all be found ready to meet Him and enter into the glory of His eternal kingdom for He is coming for the SECOND TIME (see Hebrews 9:28) very, very soon. Much sooner than many think! Sadly, it will be a surprise to many and many will mourn when they realize what they have lost by NOT accepting the FREE GIFT OF SALVATION IN CHRIST (see Revelation 1:7).
This need not be the case for you and for me! By accepting Jesus as our personal Saviour today, and choosing to receive His Word and practice it in daily life, we will be able to be kept blameless/faultless unto the day of His soon return (see Jude 24)! We are able to stand for truth by the strength that God gives us, not our own strength! Our strength is indeed only weakness but Jesus is mighty to save. He has suffered and bled and died and He lives that we may live and prevail by faith in HIM!
I have posted this with great concern that truth is often in the hands of the minority and those who should be ministers of the gospel are often leading people astray! Often they also water down truth and fail to point souls to the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. Spirituality is the most sacred human gift from our creator in my opinion. ANY tampering with the truth and/or history of it is , to me, the most serious offense man can commit. I see two people confused here, in the Bible no where does it say we must keep the Passover in a specific day like in the old covenant, we are commanded to break bread as often as we want it (1Corinthians 11vs23-25). Now this idea of morphing old testament Passover into celebrating Jesus Christ's death on the cross is purely the invention of the Catholic church so to throw in Easter in to the mix. It's not biblical and the moment you do something not commanded in the Bible you are on Satan's territory no matter how sincere you are. If you celebrate the Passover you are judaising and you can't just pick one festival take all of them.
