I was actually there. I'm in the video. It was such a surreal experience. A whole bunch of deftones fans mixed in with some extras. And during a break while filming in the gym they played change (in the house of flies). It was such an honor to be there the band was totally cool with everyone, was talking to Abe most of the time he is so down to earth. Awesome time. This was filmed in la/valley college. Thank you Deftones......

Wasn't even supposed to be on it. The original release didn't feature this song, 9n later releases this song was added as the opening track much to the dismay of the band who have said they always regretted making this track.

Chino hates this song because the record label demanded them to release a "catchy / short" song to promote the white pony album. because all the other songs were too slow and long according to them . So an spiteful Chino took the slowest, longest song of the album (pink maggit), made the tempo faster, added distortion and some rapping with the first stupid crap that came to his mind, just to "show those mfers how easy it is to make a hit single". the result was Back to School, and the label loved it.
I prefer this over Pink Maggit. This just hits so much fucking harder.
I just listened to a podcast where Abe showed the demo version of this song to someone and said, ‘with this song we’re taking these kids back to school, because we’re so sick of everyone ripping us off.’
I love how they made this song just to prove how easy it is to make a single just by changing a few things off the fly yet it's still an awesome song. That just shows how much potential Deftones has and that they don't have to make songs that are only meant to be hit singles. I just love Deftones :)

What I'd recommend is occupying yourself with activites that make you happy. If anything, by the end of it if she doesn't come back in your life she will stay in your heart, at least the positive memories will.

I grew up down the street from the drummer Abe. I was 15 obsessed with Deftones had a sticker on my old bronco and he drove past pulled me over in his fancy caddy and gave me an autograph. Almost shit myself, it made my whole world! Thank you for the music and formative memories 💝

The world was a way different place when this dropped. Pretty sure it preceded 9/11 even. But yeah people get all nostalgic about the past but really I think if you went back for too long you'd end up missing the high speed Internet (well to be fair HSI was just starting to come out back then) and the iPhones, UA-cam etc. We have a lot of really cool things. But the culture is kind of fked nowadays.

When the label added this song to "White Pony," it may have been a commercial decision but it ended up making a great album even better. It gives the album a kind of arc, starting out with "Back To School," which is rousing and fun, and then going through all the mood swings of the album before ending with a "reprise" of the "first" song ("Pink Maggit"), except this time it is more like a dirge, as if the band has been worn out and exhausted and this is their last, cathartic transmission before collapse. It was a brilliant addition to the album, but it wasn't an artistic decision, it was a crass commercial decision on the record company's part that ended up working artistically as a happy accident. Which goes to show you that art is bigger than artists and that there is nothing sacred about the artists vision--great art involves a lot of luck and randomness.
Great point. A lot of people don't know the story behind this song and that Chino hated it. It was their version of a Limp Bizkit song to make the label happy.

there's something beautiful about how this song kicked off White Pony, being a like-for-like nu metal song and not generally what Deftones is about but eventually ends on Pink Maggit, the original form of the song that is more true to themselves.

Yeah it's amazing to think back then there was no such thing as the GoPro, which revolutionized filming for sports. I am pretty sure back in the day the camera dude was also on a skateboard or something anyway to act as a dolly system to ensure the shot stays smooth and fluid.
Yup. I was a skater around this era (late 90's, but close enough) and that's how we got shots like that - someone riding along on another board filming.
right and sometimes even filming riding on the board on their knees and looking up for other shots etc. it was all really low tech back then glad someone knows what I am talking about

Musically they've moved on. But in their videos there is still alot of stuff pointing to their origins. The most common example is how often we see them skateboarding in their music videos, a homage to the group's old meetups and the local skatepark.

Always i hear this music i remember my days in school, the way as i interacted with others and i feel which not enjoyed these days as it should, it's a feeling of nostalgia for something i never had, but in own away a good feeling.

When this album came out I was in one of the darkest moments of my life, my mom committed suicide for her deep depresión when I was 11 years old in the year of 94, I was severely depressed because of this and I started drinking and taking drugs, Deftones and their music helped me cope those times full of darkness.

This song brings me back to Jr. High. Was already into them before the video but this song I could play on repeat all day. I'd be jamming to it and rarely did another kid know who I was listening to. These guys deserve way more credit.

I remember the year 2000 for me was one of the best and defining moments of my timeline... one of my favorite films was out in theaters in time for that summer, “High Fidelity”, and then this album released White Pony. I was just heavy into collecting Vinyl from that timeframe... and now I find myself here listening to this 20 years later. Hopefully I can see another 20 years 🙏

Only recently started listening to deftones. I landed on this when I was at work. Binged through around the fur and now white pony. Diamond Eyes is my next listen. I'm so glad UA-cam bought me here
When i hear this song i feel so alive
Time goes by too fast, shit, 20 years ago I was in high school listening to this masterpiece on loop, I miss those years of rebellion and innocence. The lyrics perfectly describe how we felt in those days... the kings!
Deftones tapped into something epic. I hope they live forever and never stop making music.
I feel like Generation X and Millennials had the most awesome youth, as they had the most awesome rock bands of all time, like Korn, Nirvana, Deftones and many more, and i feel jealous of that (not in a bad way, is just that i wish i could had experience those bands when they were at their prime). There aren't many bands left that are this awesome and this powerful, and most importantly, that don't transmit that energy on stage. Don't get me wrong, there are new rock bands that are fucking awesome, but bands like Deftones appear once, and i don't believe that an era like that will repeat again, at least musically speaking, and it's such a shame. What's only left is to enjoy them as long as they remain.
