The action of the film takes place on the eve of the first post-war New Year 1946 in a devastated southern city, where until recently representatives of various nationalities lived in peace and harmony. Moloch of war divided them into victims and executioners, gave birth to infinite compassion and inhuman meanness. However, the post-war life in devastation, hunger and poverty turned into a severe test. The dishwasher, the widow of a hero-pilot, steals from the police canteen to feed her sixteen-year-old daughter and two goners, whom, out of the kindness of her soul, she sheltered in her wretched home. The outraged daughter denounces her mother and she goes to atone for sin in prison.
The theme of redemption in the film is complex and not straightforward. A young lieutenant, a pilot, a Jew by nationality, returns to his native city after the hospital and learns that his entire family died during the years of occupation at the hands of a scoundrel neighbor. Blind thirst for revenge...blood for blood...turned into the void - the scoundrel has been punished and rots alive in prison.
The lieutenant's sizzling feeling pushes him to commit suicide. And only a new, awakening feeling in him for a young girl in love with him saves him from a fatal step.
