Peter words are right .. Harold park was the best Menangle just not the same feeling at all .. Popular Alm was a machine he would carry any pacer these days to the winning post . He can just about do anything on a race track . Miss you Vinnie knight its not the same without you 😢
Looking back on it now I see it a bit differently. It's always been about how Poppy sat outside Gammalite and beat him. Toughed him out. But I'd forgotten how hard Gammalite worked in the early stages.
Totally agree with you, Gammalite did it tough in the early stages, barrier 6 was always going to be a huge task and Robinson only really had the 1 option to go forward if it had any chance to beat Popular Alm, but Gammalite seemed to go to another level when put under pressure with such a tough run. V.Knight probably didn't expect Bill's Student to hand up the lead to Gammalite, still Popular Alm was a huge effort to sit in the death all the way and out muscle a gallant Gammalite. Thanks for the upload.
Robinson didn't help, agreed.......2 Very tough hardcore pacers Just like PURE STEEL. His 3rd behind KOALA KING and LOCARNO in 1980 whilst totally Murdered by TED DEMMLER was a Miracle run....also !
Yep Huge crowds on both side of track the Paddock & Ledger(where we were)& Crowds while not as big as Miracle Mile or Inter-Dom nights would be there every friday night until about 1988/1989 also used to have conservatively 50 to 60 bookies every friday night & for big race nights 100/150 bookies as well #ThoseWereTheDays!! Everything in late 70's To Late 80's was just better
We lived 1 minute from Harold Park & Since I was a 5 years old went To every Miracle Mile!! Ist one can really remember is Hondo Grattan beat Paleface Adios(almost every friday night) and unfortunately I Backed Gammalite(my fav all time horse gallops or harness) Thought Gamma was home once he the got lead!! Surely No horse in World could get past Gamma just show how good Poppy was!! But Poppy didn't win an Inter-dom Gammalite did! Three times!!!!
I lived in the Eastern Suburbs and used to head over to Harold Park every Friday night during the late 70's early 80's for a punt and a drink! I think we did 8 or 9 Miles in a row. Best memories of my youth!!!
@@andywest1965 lived a, "🐝's dick" away from Albion Park! Late 70's 'thru to mid 80's!" Great memories 💭💭 back then! Few good ones up here like Lucky Mission, amphion, paleface, Jan's chance etc! But the best ones came from Vic, with popular alm, "the standout!!" San Simeon wasn't bad either! WA had greats like pure steel and San, but Vic had poppy, frosty imp, romantic chris, tidy Jason, Michael Frost etc! My fave was, "THE KING!! 👑" (🐨) from New South! (Not 4getting Gammelite and under a cloud! both from SA?) cheers 🍻
Miss Harold Park so much. Menangle just doesn't have the same character.
Wow, Popular Alm sat in the death seat the whole way and still won.

Any horse that could run down Gammalite is a champion.
Some build up to the race - thanks for posting this and Your other videos >

A great race featuring Gammalite is the Allan Matson Free For All run in NZ.

Gammalite won 2 inter dominions, not 3. He won the 1983 & 84 editions
