  • The abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a monastic complex within the municipality of Asciano in the province of Siena. It is located on a hill dominating the Crete Senesi within a forest of cypresses, oaks and pines, it is one of the most important monuments of Tuscany both for its historical-territorial importance and for the large number of works of art. art enclosed in it. Followers of the Benedictine order, the Olivetans founded their monastery in 1313. Blessed Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348) established a religious community with the name of Congregation of Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto, on the homonymous mountain halfway between Siena and Arezzo. The monastery is accessed via a medieval red brick building, reached via a drawbridge and surmounted by a massive quadrangular tower with barbacans and battlements. The construction of this building, used as a fortified entrance door to the monastery, was begun in 1393. Above the entrance arch there is an enameled terracotta, depicting the Madonna and Child surrounded by two angels, attributed to the Della Robbia; nearby is another Della Robbia terracotta, depicting Saint Benedict blessing. After the building, take a long and suggestive cypress-lined avenue at the end of which is the bell tower, in Romanesque-Gothic style, and the apse of the church which has a Gothic facade. A door located to the right of the church entrance leads to the Great Cloister which was built between 1426 and 1443. The walls of the four galleries on the ground floor are entirely painted with the frescoes of the Stories of San Benedetto, made by Luca Signorelli and Antonio Bazzi known as Il Sodoma. It is one of the most important examples of Italian Renaissance painting. The interior of the church was renovated in Baroque style in 1772 by Giovanni Antinori. The major work of art present is the carved and inlaid wooden choir by Fra Giovanni da Verona, built in 1503-1505. It is one of the most important examples of marquetry in Europe. A staircase leads from the middle cloister to the first floor where the Library room is located, commissioned by Abbot Francesco Ringhieri in 1515 and designed by Fra Giovanni da Verona. The monastic library contains 40,000 pamphlets, volumes and incunabula, which however are not those of the original endowment. From a large arch that opens into the back wall, via a double staircase, you enter the Pharmacy, also from the 16th century. A small museum of sacred art has been set up in the Sala del Capitolo (1498).

The wonderful birdsong and aerial photography are both so very welcoming to this spectacular place. The church certainly knew, how to select the best locations! As well, this almost endless display of beautiful sacred art. Many thanks Massimo. You are a master photographer.

Grazie
