I saw these guys at Keystone Corner in San Francisco, Art Blakey had to stop the music at one point and tell the crowd to quiet down. He told them that if they wanted to talk, to go outside. "These musicians have worked hard at their craft and deserve to be heard." That was very, very cool.
you're exactly right, yet in his book "The Murder of Jazz" Eric Nisenson claims that the Jazz Messengers are trapped in 1956, which I totally disagree.
+meekedee it's an okay book by the late author, his theory is that the Renaissance bop movement that began in the 80s by Wynton and all the other young lions, which he terms the neo-con movement, has hurt jazz because it has caused jazz to continue progressing. interesting reading but I don't agree with all his premises.
I recommand latin drummer Marlon Simon's cd named "In case you missed it", for people who love this theme like me :)) Ache ua-cam.com/video/nLESxdlRXGE/v-deo.html
Caught this group at Baker's Keyboard in Detroit that year when I first heard young Wynton play. As a trumpeter myself, Wynton's technical skill blew me away. Art lit a match and they were on fire. Hard to imagine that was 40 years ago. We're old now.
Been listening to this tune for going on 4 decades. Even now the head and the way it's voiced still sounds hip and contemporary. Never imagined there was video of it.
Shouldn’t there be dancing on tables and crowd surfing? This is insane! Coming from a rock background I have no idea how you stay sat down with this hot music goin’ on!!
We play quote: ‘Gut Bucket Shit’, as Art told me a few times at “Nick’s Jazz Joint”, in Laren , Holland. Saw them live in 79/80 and in very early 1981. This fantastic piece, written by the -one n’ only- Bobby Watson is a ripper of the highest order, and was with BW the best group Art had, imo. So Dig& Enjoy & Cheers!
Outstanding composition!! Wynton Marsalis is the last of the truly fine trumpet players to forge a credible artistic path in jazz. No more up an coming jazz artists anymore, and that's a true shame. That garbage hip-hop ruined music forever, no one wants to hear anything cerebral anymore. The creative mind is a thing of the passed. Thank god for dizzy and bird!!!
Wow you said a mouth full brother. But at least we can hear the greats on tape. I love jazz more than most. Seen Freddy Hubbub live twice. Seen Blue Mitchell live in Oakland. Jazz will always live in recorded music. I listen to my grandfather music that was recorded and I never meant him he died young. Trumpet player Bunny Berigan. I am on a lee Morgan kick right now. Hip hop and also rock took away Jazz from the public unfortunately.
This same song is on the Album of the Year CD. But it is not called Fuller Love, it is called In Case you missed it. Does anyone know why the name was changed?
+Cal Barnard Look up "In Case You Missed It" in one of the Real Books. Can't remember which volume. Changes aren't too hard tho - you could probably pull it off the CD with an hour in front of the piano.
To people hating Wynton... dudes, it's clear that he's been playing for the whole night and his mouth must have been dead. The whole band is playing quite disastrously if you compare it to the cd version. It's live and I think to complain about stuff like that is just not necessary when you hear Branfords solo.
Y'all gonna hate me for saying this.. but this is the very best assembly of the Jazz Messengers.. #NoCap 🧢 A young Wynton is phenomenal player.. and Bradford was right on his back.. the best part however is the dynamics.. Kats need to learn to play soft as well as loud.. Art stressed this in all his recorded material. #RIPKing
You've got to be kidding............ besides your opinion just being an opinion, it is a fact that Art Blakey was always able to engage the best young and promisiong ones for his University of Jazz. And Wynton definitely was one of the best, if not the best, of all the talent that Buhaina signed up for his band.
I saw these guys at Keystone Corner in San Francisco, Art Blakey had to stop the music at one point and tell the crowd to quiet down. He told them that if they wanted to talk, to go outside. "These musicians have worked hard at their craft and deserve to be heard." That was very, very cool.
Love that story, thank you for sharing!
The Jazz Messengers' album named 'Album of the year' recorded with this line-up is one the best that Blakey. ever made.
Jazz Messengers were the past, the present And the future of jazz...
This song sounds so fresh. It could have come out yesterday and I wouldn't know the difference!
you're exactly right, yet in his book "The Murder of Jazz" Eric Nisenson claims that the Jazz Messengers are trapped in 1956, which I totally disagree.
+Albert Balderas Thank you! I will have to get that book...

+Albert Balderas That's a bizarre notion. Why on earth would you want to stop the progression of jazz? It's impossible...
最高です…👍

Fantastic Tune of Bobby Watson (In case you missed it)
ChangoPhil NICE one! And yeah, Watson's writing is so slick and soulful. Great player, too.

Awesome young horns blazing under the tutelage of Mr.Fambrough and Buhaina.
Charles Fambrough was an incredible bassist. Upfront in your face style. He could bring it and put it back.

Billy Pierce KILLS on this man!
Will never forget being front row for this group at Jazz Showcase in Chicago. That was my introduction to the Marsalis brothers. Thanks for the video.
this is the best song i have heard in my entire life
I heard this very group live at fat tuesday's club in nyc 1981..,, burning!! 7th ave south was a great club too, I played a few gigs there
ウィントンがバックのヴィンドボナを吹いていた時代。懐かしいです。現在のモネットのようなカエルの水掻きが付いていない。マウスピースも普通の形。ジャズメッセンジャーズ。ここから始まったんですね。
5:19 damn that's the great Walter Davis Jr. on the left.
ART BLAKEY.......... WHAT A COOOOOLLL GUY ..................... ~!~
Shouldn’t there be dancing on tables and crowd surfing? This is insane! Coming from a rock background I have no idea how you stay sat down with this hot music goin’ on!!
to me this is the classic line-up, and killer version with the exception perhaps of Bobby Watson's own. I'm in Marsalis heaven
ART BLAKEY 😎
Absolutely fresh and super hip! Timeless good music.

No it’s not 😂
This same song is on the Album of the Year CD. But it is not called Fuller Love, it is called In Case you missed it. Does anyone know why the name was changed?
It was composed by Robert Watson who changed the name of the tune when he left Blakey's group
I think it was copyright issues or something, so Bobby changed it. forget where I heard that otherwise id look up the video
The Bradford's always been ok
Anybody know the form / changes

are you kidding! he sounds amazing I have been playing trumpet my whole life and I will never in my dreams play 1/20th as well as he plays here! Shit.
This is classic stuff. The haters don't know nothing about Jazz.

@SHERMAN YOUNG I agree with that as solo artists. No comparison.
Better than Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter? Dang…hot take
LOL Good joke. Now listen to this: ua-cam.com/video/lBH-6CJYdJ4/v-deo.html
ウィントン小さすぎて笑う。170くらいだったか
No more Wynton please.
Sorry you got piped.
Wynton Marsalis is probably the worst trumpet player in the history of Jazz Messengers...
Really man? C' Mon....

Fred Dekker This damn fool is trollin and talkin out his ass.
