  • In this video I make a silicone mold for rotational molding resin castings.
    Brush on molds are easy to make with simple tools. I show how to lay up the rubber blanket and brush on the resin shell.
    Everything in the links below is stuff I use myself.
    I only recommend products that I have a lot
    of experience with and work well for me.

    First of all I love your videos! Secondly can you clean the brush after you used it to apply the rubber, if yes how? Thank you!

    • @RobertTolone
      @RobertTolone  3 роки тому +2

      You can clean it with acetone. I usually use a brush so cheap that it is not worth the time or the solvent to clean it.

    Could you put that into a frosting piping bag to get the perimeter done? Like caulking a bead?

    • @RobertTolone
      @RobertTolone  4 роки тому

      Yes, if it was disposable. I would do it as an experiment to see if it’s faster to load the piping bag and apply the rubber that way. But I can’t think of any practical way to clean and reuse the piping bag.

    The polietilene fiber that you use .Can I use cabosil instead or whats the diference ? By the way i love your videos 🌺

      Polyethylene mini fibers and Cabosil (fumed silica) are both used to thicken resins. You can add a little or a lot. You can mix resin into very stiff paste. My supplier regards PE mini fibers to be superior to Cabosil and I haven’t used Cabosil in years. It’s possible that there are applications where Cabosil would work better but PE mini fibers works well for me.

    Isit possible to apply the first two code of silicone and if you get tird or you don't have the time can you leave it to cure completely ? and the next day apply the third and fourth code to get a good thickness ?! or is it important apply all the codes at close timelines to one another so codes stick together ?!

      You can definitely apply rubber in layers over several days. New rubber will stick perfectly well to old rubber unless there is some sort of contamination like oil or excessive dust between the surfaces. Just keep the work piece clean and you can build layers over time.

    I have been watching and learning. My suggestion is to do a better job of telling what supply you are using. The list in the notes is great but for example, what is the resin you are making the mother with?

    • @RobertTolone
      @RobertTolone  3 роки тому

      It is a urethane resin called Trowel-On 60 from www.silpak.com

    hello, can I use something else instead of plastic powder?
    thank you

    • @RobertTolone
      @RobertTolone  3 роки тому +1

      There are additives that will cause the rubber to thicken and cure rapidly. Check with your rubber supplier to see what works with your brand of rubber.

      Hey Dave, thanks for watching my videos. I buy my materials from Silpak. www.silpak.com
      The resins I use for casting is Silcast 2 or Siltool. The rubber is Econosil. The rubber can be used with different hardeners. I use both pourable and brush-on hardeners, depending on the type of mold I’m using. The hard shell is made from Trowel-on 60. All of the urethane systems are 50-50 mixes and come in two- part kits. The rubbers are sold as a kit with the hardener but you can buy different kinds of hardeners depending on how you’re using the rubber. I have been buying my supplies from Silpak for 25 years and they are not a sponsor. You can call them and describe what it is you’re trying to do and they will make sure you get exactly the right materials. Their service is good and they ship promptly. The company is in Pomona, Ca if you happen to be nearby. Good luck with your projects!

      Robert Tolone Thanks for the prompt reply Robert. I’m a friend of Crazy Al. You helped me with casting tips on my Mr. R2-DFool mash-up figure(Mr.T action figure head on top of R2D2 toy body). Turned out killer! Check it out on m Instagram; @thefilthandtheslurry. I have another challenging figure I’d like to cast and asked Al for advice, he referred me to your UA-cam channel. Still stumped on if I should blanket/brush coat or 2-part cast. I’d love to text you the figure for your opinion/suggestions. Thanks again and keep the videos coming with Great tips, I’ll certainly pass it along to my casting buddies. -Dave
