What’s with all the hate? Sure it was dirty and it can be improved, but I like the idea of it. I think it’s super cool when people take a piece and make it their own by doing something creative that no ones ever done before. That’s the beauty of music.

Sure it was something different, but it destroys the original piece. "Catching Shadows" is a contemporary percussion piece and this interpretation turned it into a rock song. Fair point about taking a piece and turning it into something different; however, there is a certain extent to how much you change it from the original; there is always constructive criticism in the music industry and avoiding it won't help.
Coming off from a technical perspective, they were just kind of all over the place. The ensemble would rush and slow down, not keeping a consistent tempo in the sections. Dynamics weren't as diverse as if they played it as one dynamic.
Dynamics are an important part of interpretation, especially for this piece and for Ivan Trevino's (the composer) other pieces. They were also not 100% on beat with each other, especially the keyboard percussion and the snare line; this happens when there's a lack of communication within the ensemble.
Speaking of the snare line, they were just a major distraction. They were taking away the whole concept of the show and peice by trying to be flashy with stick tricks. They weren't always together, which surprised me because they were able to be on beat when they split but not in unison. It also seemed like the writing was rushed.
The instrument choice wasn't ideal. The electric guitar was written as if it was trying to be the main melody throughout the whole piece. The drum kit just didn't suit the style, and would have sounded better with a cajon+percussion setup or a better sounding kit.
Most instruments sounded louder than the others, and some were too low. This is a post-prod issue. If they spent a little more time listening to it more, then they would notice it more.
Lastly, they cut out the ending of the 1st movement of the piece, then transitioning it to the 2nd movement. To me, it was an abrupt transition.
Overall, it wasn't the best. I get that they wanted to try something out, but it wasn't well executed nor did they spend more time on rehearsing.

@@lancer.prancer I do not mean to be antagonistic, because I agree that this rendition wasn't put together well, but I would like to point out that Catching Shadows is actually inspired by a rock playlist Trevino listened to. The idea of this rendition, in my opinion, doesn't actually stain the intended image of the original piece.
Unfortunately, the execution was flawed, and I would agree that it is a result of rushed writing and rehearsals. I could definetly see this being a good arrangement if it had more time in the oven.

I just don't agree with this interpretation. The performance isn't very authentic, and it's just trying to be so much at the same time that it's damaging the beauty of the piece. Marching snare drums are also unprofessionally not clean. Can really use a lot of improvement.

That was pretty fucking cool, but there’s a reason the front ensemble is in the front, snares too loud and don’t fit in that much
