Thanks for thew fine video on how to update my FT-891. I read all the manual and watched your video and the manual made sense then. One step at a time.
I followed your video, then somewhere I got lost, for a couple hours my radio would turn or write, I shut down my radio tried everything, thought I bricked my radio. I reset the program switch a couple times whilst my radio could not be turned on. I left the radio alone for a couple hours, went to sleep, when I work up the next day, I played again with the radio, trying to wake it up. The radio finally woked up, after that everything worked fine. My radio was finally updated. The Power+F and C button were the key to getting my radio to wake up.
this happened to me. not. worth. it. anyone reading this, please do not update the firmware on your radio unless you know 100% what you are getting yourself into. i will never update the firmware on my 891 again, it works just fine and was a completely unnecessary update.
thanks for the video and help doing this. I did upgrade the firmware and broke that tiny knob on the back. Oops. Well now I know what the inside of my 891 looks like. Live and learn. Thanks again!
@Dan KD2FMW I was able to get the Main and DSP updated. Yaesu's procedure is a little backwards but it worked. I also re-flashed the LCD firmware since it was with the other files. My radio is now current with the models rolling off the line. 73 DE KC9EHQ
I haven’t found any explanation of exactly what the updates do. Does anyone know? Also you only needed to do the main update. The DSP was already up to date.
I have not found a defined list. The only information released from Yaesu was that it it is to correct and issue with the s meter and "other improvements." I did the DSP update too just to be sure they matched. I know the version showed the same on the screen. Thank you for the feedback!
i like the radio but OMG they need to fix some of the user settings in the firmware. 1. Mode menu, when selecting SSB mode "ask if you want USB or LSB" for faster switching. or just remove "SSB" and add in separate LSB USB trying to fined it in the Sub menu stinks why would they have it in the Submenu it makes it harder to switch. 1.5 when changing the Mode or the BAND using the VFO to select between them is horrible there is no positive feedback like the multi fashion knob. Change it to the multi fashion knob the detents "clicks" make it easier to fined what you need. and keep it up till you press the multi fashion knob to confirm. a lot of times what happens is you move the VFO knob over shoot it and then bam your on the wrong band because it closes out in 1 sec! 2. With auto tuner enabled I get a "WAIT" over the freq display so I have to go and disable the Auto tuner when tuning around the band. it's Varey distracting it makes scanning the band. 3. When adjusting the squelch or RF gain, the pop up screen stays up till you hit a button but then activates what ever button you hit! They just need it to disappear after a few seconds. 4. Direct entry mic why is there no direct entry mic to key in the freq you want to go to? 5. The power submenu is confusing ok every one gets SSB, AM, and FM power But what is the need for HF power? isn't that a little redundant?
I love this radio. I use it primarily for portable phone operation. I notice that when I switch bands from 20 to 40 it will automatically go to LSB from USB. Having some type of tactile feedback for band and mode selection would be nice. I don't use a tuner so I can't speak for that point. The power menu does seem redundant. The HF power selection is for CW and Digital operation. I would prefer that was stated in the menu. Thank you for watching. I hope they can fit some things into future updates.
I am not sure. I do not have the MARS modification on my radio. To my knowledge, the modification is solely a hardware change in the radio, not the software.
@@dankd2fmw489 This will not affect the MARS mod as, as you said Dan, it is a hardware mod not a software mod like some rigs. John, N1WOM (didn't have to update my 891 as it came with the latest already installed!)

Thanks, I bought the 891 with the fc50 with they first came out, modified the 891, hooked it up on the bench, and haven't used it. :)
Thought I bricked my 891. Dusted off an old laptop and this time had confirmation the drivers were installed. Now I'm updated and unbricked.

You're welcome. I hope it helped and you were able to get the repair done.
Excellent. Got me past an impasse.
Thanks for the walkthrough. I had the COM port issue when I tried it last. I'm going to try it again.
You're welcome. I hope you are able to get it done!

@@dankd2fmw489 The updates must be Top Secret! Thanks for running through the procedure for us - much appreciated.

Nice video. Hard to hear you somewhat but good otherwise!! 73, K8JLW
Thank you for watching and for the feedback!
Did they improve the receiver audio? I remember it being really digitally sounding.
As far as the receiver audio, I did not notice a change.

"Ok?" - worst confirmation screen ever. LOL.
Almost asking if you are sure you want to complete it, after it is done.
Please don’t do this
