You should try creating a custom challenge to test out the spike factory in the challenge menu. That way, it allows you to retry the last round without spending any monkey money.

The way the Diamond upgrade works is when one spike is removed it sends out many more at an increased rate for about a second so it place about eight for every one that’s lost
