I finished reading the Go-Between by L. P. Hartley recently, a modern classic first published in 1953. In this video I’m going to share some thoughts about the novel, and some scattered thoughts about love that were prompted by it.

The go-between was made into a beautiful film in 1971, Harold Pinter wrote the screenplay.

There are at least 2 film adaptations of this novel - one by Losey in the early 1970s and another by the BBC for television in the mid-2010s. The 1970s film starred Michael Redgrave and Dominic Guard as Leo, Julie Christie as Marian, Alan Bates as Ted and Edward Fox as Trimingham with Margaret Leighton as Madeleine, music by Michel Legrand. The BBC version had Lesley Manville, Ben Batt, Joanna Vanderham, Vanessa Redgrave, Stephen Campbell-Moore and Jim Broadbent and Jack Hollington as Leo. Both of them great productions in their own way. There's also a musical, although I know little about it. One of my favourite novels.

Very emotional love story with some lovely English quotations. A tale of lost love, regret and obsession with a period in someone's life.
American Director Joseph Losey was obsessed with the English class system. His 1971 movie is beautiful.
It's set during the Boar war , hence Trillingham asking Burgess to join British army.
Marion wooed young Leo, playing with his pre adolescent biological system.
I am so glad you liked the Go-between. I first read it in the summer when I was about 14. I have lost count of the times since, but not for a while now. I need to read it again. I think it is truly beautiful and captures the calm before the storm of WW1 and also growing up, class, so so much. I feel it isn’t read as much as it should be. I love it. There was a film in 1971. It had Julie Christie and Alan Bates. I think it was really good but I suspect it might be a bit dated now. It would be lovely if there was a new film adaption.. but I would have to cry if they changed it too much.
I wish I had read it when I was 14! It must feel very different reading it as a young person. It is beautiful! Yes I found the 1971 film, it does look a bit dated. I think there is a newer adaptation I haven’t looked into it yet. I hope it’s good and won’t make you cry!
There is a new one. About two years old now I think. The original film will always be the best though I don’t actually watch films. This book is transcendental in my opinion, off the scale perfection.
Yes, I love this novel! There's an adaptation from 2015 I really recommend, as well.

This seems to me the essence of reading; appreciation for the author's labour, joy and contentment from the reading experience and knowledge and empathy gained from each page. I started watching your video on The Go Between, and like many of your videos, felt compelled to stop, order the book, read the book, and then return to the video. 😊. The Go Between reminded me of In Search of Lost time Volume One. I hope down the road you will read or re-read Proust if you have already read him. I am confident that you would bring a fresh critical eye to his work along with, a level of enthusiasm, similar to your reviews of Shakespeare's plays. I have never read Proust, thanks for sharing. I will keep it in mind and give it a go at some point! Are there many versions of translations of In Search of Lost Time? Which would you recommend? I'm always a bit unsure which to choose when it comes to translation. Thanks!
I find translation options can sometimes be overwhelming for me. I looked into different editions of Swann's Way and decided on two. The first one was the 1996 Vintage Classics edition translated by Terence Kilmartin, C. K. Scott-Moncrieff, and D.J. Enright with the large flower on the cover. The second one was the Lydia Davis 2004 translation. I read the first chapter of each edition and selected the Kilmartin/Moncrieff Vintage Classics version to continue with. Then I ordered the additional volumes from the Vintage Classics set. My plan is to read the Lydia Davis translation once I have read the complete Vintage Classics volumes 1-7. LP Hartley is an under-read author. Eustace and Hilda by LP Hartley is worth reading.

Your review is wonderful. The excerpts you have include certainly show how beautiful Hartley’s writing is. Although, The Go-Between has been on my book wish list for ages, now, after hearing your thoughts, I am super anxious to get to it sooner than later.

Thank you for bringing this novel back to my attention - I've never read it but I somehow have heard and remembered the opening line, which is one of my favourite opening lines in literature. Another one for my list! I'm currently reading Mariana by Monica Dickens (granddaughter of Charles). It was written when she was 24 and I'm finding it quite endearing and a departure from my usual choices.
