The teacher is a metaphor for a more experienced (probably older) lover who has hurt him before/broken his heart. And he’s saying he doesn't want to "learn" to love another person because he doesn't want to experience pain and heartbreak again.
George was, I dare to say, the best pop singer of his generation.

No sugar coating, yet private. You'll learn a lot about him just through his talent, music & heart. You'll find him inspiring, & relatable. George, for many people, has helped them through life. Myself included. whether you wanted to dance around, sing with him & just have a great time. Or, you needed some care for your heart, & boy, haven't we all have had that! George was always so relatable for men & women. It would be very hard not to love him. George is missed so greatly, even though he left us with his heart and the stories of his soul, he will always live on in our hearts. I truly hope all who's out there get a chance to listen & feel the magic in his writing & his voice. George is for real, & has always has been. Tell me you've never had these exact feelings in some portion of your life. A time when you were so in love & felt like your heart was being broken, & It was slow & painful. So much emotion in his voice, sincerity, pain, hope It's all right there! George has been always so relatable, we loved him, genuinely cared about him, fell in love with his music, got married with his music & yes, many babies were born because of his music. (Literally a fact.) George liked that bit! When he had his first life scare, in Austria I believe, he went into a comma I believe for 10 days. When coming out of It he was speaking with a different English accent, It was quite funny, however, the Drs. were scared silly. When getting the media was there, of course, he took the time ( as much as he could) & said how thankful he was to still be here, & so thankful That he realized how much his fans really cared. He was surprised by that. He also apologized for not being able to respond back to them at that time. Now, you tell me how many artists, after such a life scare would take the time to do that ? Along with saying thank you from the bottom of his heart! That's really all that he wanted to say. Anyhow before I write another chapter in my book, It's plain to see just how much George was loved, profoundly loved! I'm so glad you're getting by chance to be introduced to the seasons of George's life. He is unforgettable! LOL, my friend, ENJOY!

The “teacher” refers to his first love. First and new experiences with being in love. He is the less experienced “student” and the “teacher” is the more experienced person who is toying with his heart.

I was like 3 years old when this used to come on the radio and I knew every word and straight up from Paula Abdul. Those were the good ole eighties missing those days
The song is just about a relationship. He isn't an actual "student", and she isn't an actual "teacher". He's just a guy with a broken heart, who isn't sure he's ready to get into another relationship with somebody who could potentially break his heart again. The last "teacher" he had made him cry...that's just the last person that he was with, who taught him about love & relationships.

I can only reiterate what I said in a previous post. The albums Listen Without Prejudice, Patience and probably Older even more, might suit your musical taste more. And you'd probably really like the Wham! album Make It Big, too.
Man, this was a classic for me back then , damn.
The concept was very fast. This song was only conceived in only eight hours and was a one take song instrumental and vocals. He wanted a minimal arrangements because this was so sad. It's very different to the first ballad of the album ''Father Figure'' (very RnB) and enter more in the emotional and sadness side of him. It's was a another n.1 single in US when it's came out.
In the interview of 2010, George cited to his favorites songs of the album was this song and ''Father Figure''.
