When they first announced this a while ago they were talking about a price around $70-85k which would be a fairer price for a first gen car that many would consider taking a gamble on, and would also be attractive for novated leasing and coming under the luxury car tax.
At $120k why would anyone take a gamble knowing the massive depreciation and unknown reliability.
MG seems to think that they’re in competition with legacy car companies when their actual competitors are other Chinese cars like BYD Xpeng and Zeekr which are building better cars for a lot less money.

    • @bob808
      @bob808 3 дні тому +2

That's valid, but, the Cyberster also has a 10 year warranty. So even if the reliability is questionable, and the vehicle has issues, it's got a great warranty.

    • @Seafury18

The Cyberster is what happens when chinese cars follow the same 'Slow but perfect' formula many car manufacturers are doing right now. Its how Chinese car develop, improve so fast at the cost of less refinement and less rnd time/cost. The cyberster is already somewhat outdated with the range, infotainment (small 3 split screens in 2024 ???), but what it got right is so much better than what MG released several years ago, but because they developed this car for so long, the cost skyrocketed as well

Like many other people below, this is a crazy price point for this brand and the car. If you have the $120k you might be able to find a few more bucks for something new or near new with more pedigree.
As is evident in Paul’s review, it looks fundamentally fine to drive but it just looks like it is trying too hard and look like parts of other brands (names withheld) in some areas.
You will probably have fun along the way but keep the defib pack handy at trade-in time to see what your $120k is now worth to the marketplace.

Delay on throttle has been an issue in their fuel cars too. It’s a safety risk coz you don’t know when the car is going to decide to react to you stepping on the accelerator! I sold my MG HS because of that. Rev counter on an electric car? If good on straight but not corners, are we remembering what Jeremy Clarkson said about the American cars? They should have called it the MGE. Cyber these days has been used too much. Maybe they should have used a quad steering wheel like the Austin Allegro. I’m sorry, I’m an MG and BMC fanatic. I love the fact that MG and Mini are still around, but they have absolutely no connection to the original cars. I guess Mini does a bit. As it was developing a new Mini while still under Rover. Such a shame, and yet both companies always throw out videos of people comparing them. MG is Chinese and it’s amazing how many people still think it British. I hate seeing MG3’s with Union Jack flags on the roof. Sorry, just pissed off. Sorry.

A very decent first go from MG, but $30-40k over the odds? 100km/h braking in 36m is great. Anything above 40m should never get 5star safety rating! Let alone all those 50m+ utes/4wds.

You'd have to be a fool to drop$115k on one of these! If you got that kind of money petrol not an issue. Maserati Grecale GT/Levante GT and Porsche Macan 💩 all over this for a little more, cheaper with 20k odo second hand.

I think the reason the prices are so ridiculously high is because they know the cars are going to depreciate a lot so for a starting price of 120k after 5 years it might go down to 55k or so but if the original price was 75k then it would go.down to 35k or lower and they dont eeally want people to obtain cars at such a low cost. We know car manufacturers are trying their best to stop people profiting of their cars when they buy a model in demand and sell it at a premium so they purposely over price them.

Spoke to an MG dealer in Western Australia recently, they advised they have sold 6 cars to date in all of Australia.
Clearly shows how disconnected MG is when it came to positioning the vehicle in the market.
$60,000 - $70,000 would have been more realistic for this.

finally a convertible ev .. Although still out of reach for most but its a good start... HOWEVER: NOBODY except the geely dealers will be able to service the batteries or the screens of this .. After production of this stops and considering the short lifecycle of chinese products its lease only. I really hope for regulation that imposes open standards and mandatory easy replacement of batteries..

I am very interested to see if the electric sports car market takes off. If you have enough money to buy a sports car. You generally want it to make sports car noises. The GT car market might be more accepting. But I wouldn't call that a thriving market either.
Also. Can you call the MG Cyberster a GT car if the car only has 400kms of range? It means you cant tour much in your grand tourer...

On the onset, $110,000 does seem feral for an mg. But luxury convertibles, excluding the mx5, are very expensive, and dont offer the power this does. Id opt for the mustang, but this makes 100 odd hp over the mustang, blows the z4 and mini out of the water. The 10 year warrenty is killer too.

As an old MGB and MG Midget owner (yes I’m that old)! I was interested in this new model but 120k is a joke along with 2tonne kerb weight! This should be about 70k given after a year or so it will only be worth 1/2 of new cost. Battery tech is changing so quickly, prices are falling rapidly along with better mileage and weight savings. Think they have hit the market too late and at too high a price.
