Hi Callie, I will start off by stating that I see no wrong in the hairdressers being concerned about you damaging your hair excessively. Hair colour and style aside, healthy hair is the most beautiful and should be the number one condition your hair is in at most times.
Now, to change hair colour from a dark shade like brunette brown to any shade of blonde, you need to run the hair through bleach, probably at least two rounds to strip enough colour off the strands. This process will turn the hair a yellow-ish orange shade in colour, and is nowhere near ready. But don't fret, there is more to do. After rinsing off the bleach, a toner of a certain shade will usually be applied, to adjust the colour to a suitable shade of blonde, as per the hairdresser's discretion.
If you notice that the final result still seem like a considerably dark shade of copper brown or orange, the hairdresser clearly have not bleached the hair enough. Which in this case, means two probabilities. One, he/she is too inexperienced at the moment, but make no mistake, is no fault of his/hers. Hair bleaching is a complicated process and takes time to master. Two, he/she did not bleach the hair enough because your hair is not in a healthy enough condition to proceed further.
You have mentioned that your previous hairdresser has provided you what you want for the past six years. Judging that you are a natural brunette, you have been actively bleaching your hair continuously throughout that period. Perhaps you need to consider the fact that your old hairdresser simply did not care for the condition of your hair when she kept agreeing to bleach it for you, which is a bad thing! Overly stressing the hair out by bleaching and colouring hair may still yield results in the short term, but in the longer term, will cause permanent hair damage, and very likely result in excessive hair loss.
Therefore, I would advise you as follows.
1. Sit down and think, whether staying blonde is the direction you want to stay on for the considerable future. Being a natural brunette, keeping blonde not only means having to use a lot of time and money for regular maintenance, but also will take a toll on the health of your hair. I cannot guarantee how long you can maintain your full head of hair if you persist with bleaching it continuously. After all, six years of bleaching would have really damaged your hair pretty severely. It is a good time to stop.
2. Ask your friends or search online for well reputed hairdressers, someone you can trust and not doubt at the first instant possible. Before any haircut or process, have a detailed chat with him/her. Let them know what are your concerns and going forward, whether what you want is sustainable in the long run, if not, what are the next best alternatives.
Personally, I would strongly advise you to stay away from bleaching or even any hair process for awhile, to let your hair recover in the time being. Brunette or blonde or any other hair colour, is beautiful if you just feel confident wearing it. If you do not have the luxury of having the hair colour you yearn, consider other options. Maybe you would want to get a new haircut? Pixies are really the 'in' hairstyle these days, or maybe a long bob if you are not that adventurous. If you feel like you want a totally new start, just shave it all off like you said! I see no harm in that, with many women open to the idea of doing it these days.
