I’m from Chicago. I grew up watching Jordan in the 90s. I’ve seen him play live. I collect Jordan cards and he’s my favorite player in any sport… but there’s no way this card should be ranked higher than the Honus Wagner. Mantle and Wagner, 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 1st, I see an argument for either. But not the 1986 Fleer Jordan, IMHO.
It’s just recency bias by the voters. Wagner is bar none the most iconic card ever in the hobby. It literally put the hobby on the map because it was the first card of value to make national news. It has a story (whether it’s true or not) as to why it’s so scarce. That makes a card iconic. Jordan and Mantle are iconic cards simply because the Baby Boomers grew up with Mantle and GenX grew up with Jordan.
Iconic means recognized. In the hobby we all know the top 3. But in the world at large you put the Jordan on the same table as the Honus and it’s going to be more recognized simply because Jordan is more recognized. I had this at two all time behind the Mantle at #1. Honus #3 because of his fading notoriety among newer hobby collectors.
I had it at 3. Wagner 1, Mantle 2. I think 1 and 2 are interchangeable. This one is pretty clearly locked in for me at 3.

Scarcity counts a great deal, especially among the top 10. If the Wagner and Mantle cards were as common as the Jordan card......
The most common card in the top 6. Doesn't rely on scarcity for its being iconic.

This is certainly true.
