    As a mature students undertaking maths at Uni I have found this website very good. To those who don't like the mucking around there are plenty of websites that don't use humour to educate. I love the fact that the students genuinely seem to enjoy the class and are engaged in what is being taught. Good on you YAYmath. Keep the good work going as I love the fact that humour is mixed in with learning to love math. This website has been of tremendous help in my maths journey. Regards
    Helen

      I am "older" and trying to recall high school math and I am here for the same reason. Always, always stunk at math, but I think this guy does a great job. Wish I would have had someone who brought it alive like this.

      When I started college this year I couldn't even do fractions. I felt like such a loser for not knowing the basics. Now I am doing College Algebra.. and if you can get the hang of the fundamentals now, then trust me, you will not be spending full days trying to master these materials. I don't doubt you will kick ass ;-)

    I have a question... Since irrational numbers are irrational because they don't repeat and they go on for infinity. Wouldn't infinity work it out so that at some point it would start repeating? At some point wouldn't you say... I have totally seen this pattern before. Like I am sure it would fool you at some point. Like on Pi I am sure you run into 314 a few times... but wouldn't the whole thing eventually repeat at some point?

    Also, some irrational numbers have patterns, eg 0.101001000100001... has a pattern, but is also irrational

    • @holdthatlforluigi

      Things with a pattern that never end can be rational. But it has to be repeating pattern like 1010101010101010...

    Great video. Natural numbers are good for counting (counting only?). Most primitive systems, including the Roman Numeral system were "monetary" in nature, and you can't have zero coins in your purse. (Young people learning that system probably didn't have the shortcuts like IV and IX that require subtraction). Could we say that Whole numbers began with the Hindu-Arabic system? I assume that the others (Integers, Rational etc.) began at later times. Altho Egyptians may have had simple fractions (numerator of 1), they were not known as we have them today.

    can someone please explain why ^37 is an irrational when it doesn't go on and is this 6.08276253?

    • @jermainewilliams9545
      @jermainewilliams9545 9 років тому

      because with irrational numbers...the pattern of decimals doesn't go on or terminates. 6.82 ( pattern terminates or ends) or 6.8282828282( pattern repeats) would make it rational. However you see the pattern of decimal changes. 6.08227 which makes it irrational.

    • @scottweiss9618
      @scottweiss9618 5 років тому

      Hi Lucid. Zero over 1 is a fraction that is equal to zero. It is used in algebra all the time, and remains defined. Your problem is only with zero as the denominator.

  • @davidblack9071
    @davidblack9071 10 років тому

    Oh follow up question... If that is the case wouldn't that make the whole point of irrational numbers be invalid? Wouldn't all numbers be rational numbers then?

    • @scottweiss9618
      @scottweiss9618 5 років тому

      the Idea of Irrationality is that they are Outside the One Is Unitary System of Numbers -- they are not evenly factorable by 1 or any other number factorable by 1. Basically all Square Roots of Prime Numbers are Irrats. the first Irrational Number to be discovered was the square root of two, because it is the diagonal of a Unit Square (a square that has sides equal to 1). the Greeks called it Irrational because they could not determine an exact value for the Square Root of Two.

    • @scottweiss9618
      @scottweiss9618 5 років тому

      Yes, a Rational Number can be a Whole Number in the sense that a Whole Number Divided by 1 is a Rational Number and equivalent to a While Number, itself.

  • @andywright8803
    @andywright8803 9 років тому

    There is an elephant in the room however, in that you can't EVER write irrational numbers exactly, nor do calculations with them (except in certain cases eg Surds). All you can do is approximate them to neighbouring rational numbers, and perform rational operations on them.

    • @scottweiss9618
      @scottweiss9618 5 років тому

      Yeah, in advanced math, whenever you have the Square Root of a Prime Number, one keeps in the Square Root Format and does not use the calculator approximation.
