End of The Railroad in the Continental USA

  • This is the end of the railroad in the continental USA (simultaneously it is also the end of the CSX Homestead Subdivision near Florida City, FL.) We are just about 14 miles away from the tip of mainland Florida and the end of the continental United States of America.
    It is now know as the CSX Homestead Subdivision and up until around a decade ago, it was used for freight and initially built for passenger trains to bring tourism to the area. This historic railway was built in 1926 by Seaboard Air Line and even connected with the Miami Extension of the FEC Overseas Railway en route to the Florida Keys and Key West until the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane destroyed it. This line played a vital role in the history of South Florida as we know it today and unfortunately, it is being left to rot disgracefully. I think it deserves better. Some investor with money should purchase it and make a tourism or excursion ride out of it. Join me for some archaeology in this video!

    I used to work in the area around the mid 2000, and remember seeing railroad cars store right at the end of the line, those tracks were in use until around 2009, there was a freight train that came sometimes one or twice a week to a construction company that used to be at Mowry drive , they also serviced a yard north of that company were I used to see lumber cars stored inside that yard.

    An interesting series of videos! I did a bit more internet reading on the Homestead line, and one source said that passenger service ended pretty early after it was built. The remaining question for me is whether or not there were freight customers on the "connection" track east of the Y, and if so, which railroad served them. If it was FEC, then there must have been a connection. If it was SAL, then the question remains open. Cheers from Wisconsin.

    • @railrol82
      @railrol82  3 роки тому

      I'm catching up on my comments today, Andrew. You are correct sir, it was built in 1926 for passenger service and in 1929 it switched over to freight (because of the great depression and other factors. The businesses to the East of the Y were definitely FEC. Thanks as always for the views and comments!

      One of the most critical things in a concert is the energy that the brings and they sure bought it! Although lately, I've been listening to Taj Mahal songs!

      Ever since Hunter Harrison took over, they've been shutting down yards and "cutting out fat" all over the country. One casualty in 2017 was the Tropicana Unit train. Now it runs in a mixed intermodal train. Hope you have a great week, J!

      I was the passenger and someone else was driving so l could film. It is risky to drive and film at the same time. Thanks as always for your views and comments!
