  • In this mini documentary I outline the history and current practice of fiddling in Sweden. I discuss the early relationship between fiddle music and the sälgflöjt (willow flute) and säckpipa (bagpipe), and the development of the current repertoire. I look at the first tune collectors, the origins of the Spelmänslag fiddle groups, and the renaissance of Swedish folk music following the "Green Wave" of the 1970's.
I go into some detail about ornamentation and style in Swedish fiddling, with some comparisons to other related fiddle styles. I discuss the complexities of polska rhythms, and describe the Nyckelharpa and träskofiol.
I gratefully acknowledge the help and inspiration given by Mia Marine in creating this piece, and strongly recommend her fiddle academy if you are interested in serious study of Swedish fiddle.

A nice description of a lot of the particular nuances of fiddling. Thanks for putting some highlight on this wonderful tradition that doesn't get enough notice. When you hear Swedish fiddling, you know it.

I attended workshops on Swedish fiddle years ago in Minnesota and Wisconsin and have been enthralled with Swedish and Norwegian fiddle tunes. Thank you so much for this informative history lesson and for that wonderful link to Mia's Academy!!! I hope you also play some Swedish and Norwegian tunes on your channel occasionally. Thanks again!

i have been once in Sweeden. i was able to learn to dance polska, hambo, schottis, polkett and stigvals. wonderful dances, where you need a good partner because in the couple both have to lead their own part. well....for an amateur fiddler like me this repertoire is "sugar for the ears" because it is not in a hurry like irish music...but nevertheless more difficult to play in good sweedish style or mood. here where i live there is no other fiddler to practice with, so i'm a bit sad about that, and your lesson talking the history of this kind of music is very much appreciated, thanks Chris!!! In Forlimpopoli there are 4 meeting every year of nickelharpa, one of my best friends is Davide Castiglia, you can hear him in this video. ua-cam.com/video/1MY-ac3Ywhc/v-deo.html

Voice over is far too fast, and the pronunciation of Swedish poor.
