In this video I react to an amazing exposé from German comedian and satire artist Jan Böhmermann on German satire show NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE. It looks at German reality TV show Schwiegertochter gesucht.

Because of this, they cancelled the show.
I would also recommend the "gosling gate" by Joko and Klaas. They showed how the german television award worked by sending a fake Ryan Gosling.

Oh, yes!! This is one of the GOATS of German satire, investigative journalism and internet culture (and beyond)! Böhmermann sometimes is a controversial figure, but imho he's right 95% of the time and doing a very important service to German society!
This was legendary. I kind of miss the antics of the old Böhmermann. I don't really enjoy his new stuff anymore.

I am not a huge fan of "Joko & Klass" ("Late Night Berlin"), but they sent a fake "Ryan Gosling" to a german award show in 2017 < this was so amazing! Even the foreign media wrote about it: "man pretending to be Ryan Gosling accepts award on his behalf" ... epic prank!
The second one I love is the "Tinder Date Prank" they made up. Imagine to be on a first date and they made up the whole scene! Thanks to a ear plug you can help a foreign couple, know everything the date studies, gets recognized as a friend by a german superstar, get in some action and pretend: "yeah, that's my daily life!".
Hard to describe it! But very entertaining for sure and worth to watch it!

The idea of fake Ryan Gosling might be taken from a Czech prank show who did this 2015 with a fake Jim Carrey (watch?v=Nd6HCLy748o). If it is so then I don't like that they didn't give credit.

And outside of germany you'd have to search for someone who gets it. They know his name, but that's it.
For everyone who doesnt know: a certain dictator with a weird mustache was very fond of his german sheparddog (deutscher Schäferhund) namened "blondie" afaik.

This segment aired in the late evening on a Thursday., on a channel that wasn"t pulling any viewiership numbers whatsoever. RTL pulled the show before it was noon on Friday. They had no choice but to make and publicise that decision immediately, even though it was right down the middle of the running season of their FLAGSHIP, PRIMETIME, NETWORK-DEFINING, SUNDAY-EVENING SHOW!!! Keep in mind, RTL is one of the two biggest private media-networks in Germany (think FOX in the US). That show turned Jan (and his entire team) into a living legend in Germany's media landscape.
"One who loves dogs, must love people too - this is a well-known fact in Germany" - the occasional Hitler reference.
Finally!!! I waited for this reaction for months 😂 this is by far my favorite prank (if it can be called that) ever performed.
Just for those who still didn't get it: Hitlerr loved dogs.
And the powerful woman reference in the beginning was to mislead you and think, he will talk about then chancellor Merkel.

something is wrong with my brain. as an austrian, I can speak and read german fluently, but for some reason, I cannot stop reading the english subtitles lol
I read them, too, because I want to know how the translation is and also which information he gets at which point. But to be honest, even if this wasn't the case, I'd probably feel I'd miss something if I didn't read the subtitles.😅

You should really watch the "Goldene Kamera #Gosling Gate" if you like things like that. I feel like that was even on another level, and even if the 2 Videos that cover this are relativly long, it is so worth it!

Love your opinion on reality TV.
A few tips to improve your German pronunciation:
1. “ei” is like the English “i” sound (as in “like”)
2. “ie” (as in “Schwiegertochter”) is like the English “e” sound (as in bee)
3. "s" is almost always pronounced as a voiced s (I know it's a sound that's not really common in English), but never like the English "sh" (like you did, when you pronounced “gesucht”)
A great show, maybe the most influencial show we have in germany. You will find some hate comments against Böhmermann under this video. It's because he isn't loved by rightwing extremists in germany and austria. And they have been the topics of his last two shows, so they are still a little bit angry.

This isn’t just about right wing „extremists”.
Even other presenters who work for ZDF (the television station Böhmermann belongs to) like Markus Lanz and Richard David Precht disagree and distance themselves from him and his very narrow minded opinions. Böhmermann even wanted to cancel well known and respected scientists during COVID, because they criticized government measures which later proofed to be ineffective.
But the stuff he did in this video and other things like with Fynn Kliemann were brilliant. I also think he is very entertaining most of the time. Not as much as Raab or Schmidt were in their prime times, but better than nothing.

Those 150€ are legal, because they are "Aufwandsentschädigung", not a wage.
This means, that what you did is actually more like volunteering, but you still get something, not for your time and work, but for resources you put out mostly. The amount is a flat rate. You get this for volunteering, for example if you act as a test subject in a trial, or for acting as a guardian for a family member.
Usually workers rights are really good here, but that does not include tricks like these.
I knew a contestant of one of these shows, focusing on fat people.
The girl was stocking a supermarket here for a living and lived with her parents. She absolutely had a mental disability and was verry naive.
She got the flat 150€ for the show.
They gave her phrases to say. They showed her Barbie collection and made her read and act out little stories she liked to write about the cracters. They made her and the guy get a chocolate couples massage in a nearby Thai massage parlour (actually a really good and authentic one. I knoww these people and have no idea why they would have RTL over...).
after filming they left the family with the electricity cost, which is not a flat rate in Germany. You may imagine how much more than 150€ that bill was. And you only get that at the end of the year.
She had used the 150€ to buy a new sofachair for her dad, who could not walk well anymore.
A young lawyer from the same village took on RTL for free for them, bu you can imagine how one unexperienced lawyer fares against the RTL team, that has prepared for those cases for years. Nothing came of it. The girl was absolutely distraught and her life, that was not great but okay before really spiralled.
The last I heard of her,that she had moved in with a guy that wasn't very good tro her from the beginning and in the end ended up killing her.
I am not saying RTL lead to this ending for her, but they sure contributed when they made fun of her on TV in front of millions and cost the family so much money, they did not have.
These people are absolute scum, with a disregard for their contestants, viewers and for the law. They are leeches and I am not the only one really proud of Böhmermann for what he did here.
Little edit: Don't be apalled by how Böhmermann speaks about mentally disabled people in the beginning.
Yes "mentally behind" and "disabled" are sometimes used as slurs here, but way less than 20 years ago. He did use them however knowing what he had to present and to explicitly shame RTL for exploiting actually diabled people or those with an IQ on the verge of that.
totally besides the point, but as an autist, I just wanted to add that "mentally disabled" isn't necessarily related to IQ.
@@pyratehyena1312 I think the problem is that in English the terms "mentally" and "intellectually" are often used interchangeably and therefore it can be difficult to use the correct terms. In German at least there's a (relatively) clear difference between "geistig behindert" (challenged intellectually/due to learning disorders) and "psychisch behindert" (challenged due to mental illness). Though, sadly, some people might not even be able to tell the difference between these two terms, either. But yeah, "intellectually disabled/challenged" probably would have been a better choice of words in this context and I actually was thinking the same reading the comment (not that anyone deserves to be made fun of or to not be taken serious in either case).

I'm repeating myself, but please watch the episode on King Charles' coronation from Böhmermann. Its very funny, a lot of references to British stereotypes and at the end you get a parody song Böhmi wrote for the eurovision song contest. The automatic subtitles are decent. It's called "UK Special, wit h love from Britain" 🤗

After this show went on air,
within 24 hours, RTL stopped the show and Vera to rethink and relaunch this show...
Jan is always worth watching.
It was a big scandal at that time and several editors of the show got fired.

I remember watching sitcoms on rtl2 and reality shows on pro7 that oftentimes were actually ok to watch, about 10-15 years ago (like many episodes of "We Are Family". But even "Frauentausch" wasn't so horrible in the beginning). Now it's really bad and I can barely stand private tv anymore, except for a few sitcoms, adult cartoons and other shows that might still be watchable. But I suppose streaming and on-demand services have taken the place of regular tv for many people nowadays, anyway.

That's not true. Julian Hessenthaler (from Austria) made this Ibiza-Video. Hessenthaler made contact to German media through corners because there was no longer trust in Austrian media. Hessenthaler and Böhmermann had a meeting in Collogne (Germany) to speak over a cooperation. At this time, Hessenthaler already had the Ibiza-Video but the investigation of the case wasn't complete. Böhmermann said: "No." He didn't want to work on this story.
Hessenthaler found ohter German media - Der Spiegel and Die Süddeutsche Zeitung - that worked with him on the story.
But later Böhmermann made allusions about Ibiza in public. This appearance was Mid April 2019. This put Hessenthaler in danger. May 10th Hessenthaler fled from Autria to Germany...
At May 17th was the release of the Ibiza Video. The invistigation of the case still wasn't complete. But a lot of further investigations become impossible. And they wanted to reduce the danger with the release. Der Spiegel and Die Süddeutsche Zeitung released only the parts of the Ibiza-case, which they can prove.
This allusions about Ibiza in public were a very bad move of Böhmermann.
To send his source to his doom destroyed the trust in media.
In 2023 Hessenthaler sued Böhmermann at law (in Germany). But Böhmermann said: "Our talk wasn't confidential." And Hessenthaler coudn't provide written evidence.
But for German media it's a ethical question.
Somethimes Böhmermann is a good guy. But not always.
You have to be careful.
If you have informations which puts powerful people in danger: Don't trust Böhmermann!
The camera team will also uses a lot of power, via lamps and cameras. People have told other stories, where the participators got a huge energy bill the next month and RTL didn't compensate them at all. They basically lost money by being part of the show.

Germanys Freedom of Speech in person
Sadly that's a pretty common thing in German private tv: they pick certain people who then are made to look like total idiots. Shows with people living off social benefits seem to be relatively popular, as well. Or take Wife Swap for example, I watched the British and the US version of it and the British one was actually kind of nice to watch. The US version seemed a bit 'dirtier'. But none of them compared to the German version, where it's basically a thumb of rule that one family is the 'normal' one - the one viewers probably will identify with. The other one is the opposite, often 'lowest social class', the house is always dirty (one of the first things the 'wife' does in the new home is to check how dusty it is. The camera would then even show pictures of dirty toilets), the kids are neglected, the husband is unemployed and lazy, etc. Though I don't know if this show is actually still on, I don't really watch tv anymore. I know there used to be reruns from the early-mid 2000s a couple of years ago.
There's even a certain word in German: "asozial" (in the video it was translated as "anti-social"). It's often used for certain types of people, but often also for these types of tv shows/channels, as well. Generally it's a term for people who "don't contribute to society", or people you would avoid in general, because they don't live up to certain (basic) standards. Some people may use this term in a more sarcastic way, but I personally know of people who, when they use it, they actually mean it and it reflects their image of people and society.

Unfortunately, this was the only show they exposed. But it was very successful. The show was cancelled and Vera lost her job.
This episode basically lead to “Did Böhmermann do this?” basically being a running gag in some things.
It’s definitely part of German TV history.
The show definitely changed a lot and isn’t as much satire as it used to be. It’s a weird and sometimes also not really useful mix of satire with journalism. Like he basically leaked documents related to the biggest rightwing extremist murder series after the World Wars in Germany. And he’s also exposing different people all the time. From influencers like Bibi or Fynn Kliemann to companies like More Nutrition to parties like the AfD or the Austrian FPÖ.
It’s a weird mix of satire and journalism from actual politics to very much irrelevant topics.
It’s hard to describe the show and sometimes I really think he needs to seperate shows because the mix just doesn’t work or it should be longer with a more differentiated picture but it’s definitely an important part of German TV and definitely has a better quality than some shows we have.
But it would be very interesting for you to watch German reality TV like Bauer sucht Frau (basically the farmers version of Schwiegertochter Gesucht)
Funfact: I live close to the presenter and even though I hate that show for making fun of people she’s done some great stuff for dogs in our area.
13:15 For comparison, my mother got cast for sth like a fake reality TV show (would be embarrassing but Idrc) as what I like to call an amateur actor imitator bc that's the quality they're looking for when it comes to German trash TV. There was maybe a total of 1 day of "work" where she just had to wait most of the time and actually did sth for maybe half an hour. She got 420 € or so for that one day. That was almost 20 years ago. So yeah, 150 € for 10-30 days is ridiculous.
The reason why they only earn 150 euros is the following: many contestants, especially "Simon", are on wellfare or receive unemployment money. If you receive any financial support from the city, you are only allowed to earn an additional 100-180 Euros a month (depending on the services). Everything above that will be confiscated by the Jobcenter / Employment Agency.
At least that's what they say. Partially, it is true, since many contestants actually receive financial help, but many of them also *don't*. And i suppose those people also only get 150 Euros for the shoot.
Either way: it's exploitation at it's finest. 150 Euro, wellfare or not, is not nearly enough to cover the damages from this shoot. Your reputation will be destroyed. That's not worth any money.

Yes, the show still exists. However, they've moved from ZDFneo to ZDF and publish new episodes on fridays, now. In recent times, there is growing criticism, though, due to inaccuracies and suboptimal handling of corrections afterwards. It is still a gorgeous satire show, but be careful with the presented facts of recent videos.

Schwiegertochter Gesucht was a German dating reality show where "handycaped people" (people with a "lower IQ" ) looking for the love of their life but never got a chance and this show is about to bring 1 + 1 together on a romantic way.
But the way this always looked, you could see that they always try to get handycaped people in front of the camera to get the most profit and to make fun of them.
This show was really bad and got a lot of critics but only ONE man was able to stop this madness and this was with this show. This is not the only stunt this show has pulled the last years.
He was messing arround with the minister if finance of Greece, with the turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan by calling him "GOAT FUCKER" (btw thats the hidden link with the GOAT-Joke in this show and later with "we doesnt have anything to do with CRIMES" ) (which caused an diplomatic issue between Germany and Turkey - Merkel's (bundeskanzler of Germany) phone was Ringing)... and for this he had to get extra protection to not be killed by assassins this man has send after him. And still do a lot of amazing things in his show - its definitelly worth to subscribe the "Neo Magazin Royale" :)
And this here is again, beyond a standard prank. HAHAHA Just to doument how bad the SCAM of this show "schwiegertochter Gesucht" is...
The connection to WALLRAF is that this show also placed on the TV station RTL is documenting sectetly whats goes wrong and to publish it and try to make this work a better place . And this small TV show here just captured this and turn it upside down against the TV Station like a boomerang... which makes is even more hillarious.
Also the trailer with the people in are all photoshopped in TV-Stars too. To whis is full of hints and small jokes that people from oversears dont even get how much more genius this truly is.
And this is not the first and also not the last big stunt of this little show. And im happy to have this show in the TV (Even that I dont have a TV at home)

@9 naja, ich denke es ist auch dann lustig, wenn man nur amerikanischen Gangsta-Rap kennt.
Ich kannte Haftbefehl nicht, als ich das zum ersten mal sah und bis heute weiß ich auch bloß, dass er existiert (und habe irgendwann mal ein Interview mit ihm über den Polizistensohn-Song gesehen, wo man ihm angesehen hat, wie sehr ihm der Böhmi auf den Sack gegangen ist), habe aber noch nie bewusst was von ihm gehört. Böhmermanns Parodie ist trotzdem genial.
Allerdings: "Recht kommt" ist um Meilen besser als "Ich hab Polizei". Enthält allerdings massig Anspielungen, die auch hier in D viele Leute nicht verstehen.

Vor allem mit den Videos gibt's auch so genug Anspielungen, die man interpretieren kann, auch ohne deutscher zu sein. Mein Favorit ist allerdings "Bürgermeister". Video und Lyrics sind der Hammer!

*1) Schlager is a very special music genre in Germany. it's comparable to country in the US ("take me home country roads" is considered a honorary Schlager)... part cheesy old ppl music, part classic songs everybody knows and a general party hit once in a while. else it's hyper-stylized shows playing on humpa tradition while trope-milking emotions... actual musical styles vary from trad. brass over chanson to pop-house.
ask for "good" and "cringe" Schlager and you'll get a lot of suggestions. to me this is almost all cheesy cringe kitsch, but "good even though Schlager-Hit" imho:

I find such "reality TV" programs terrible. People are shown up for ratings and money, characters and quirks are exaggerated and ridiculed.
Böhmermann got exposed himself lately, because he made a show about cancel culture and then did himself what he criticised in the show.

Well, of course... he is paid for his job. The 'bad talking' (I love, that you didn't say 'bad-mouthing,' btw), on the other hand, is usually a consequence of people's actions in the first place.
