In the first episode, Sofia starts out on Shady Pines retirement Home. Sofia shows up unannounced at the Girls' house after the home burned down. Sofia ends up moving in with the others and stays there. BTW, Estelle Getty (Sofia) was the youngest of them all. Where's Waldo first came out in 1987.
Yes, Where's Waldo was kind of a new fad when this aired, and I think most adults, even those without kids (or grandkids) were aware of it. You couldn't pass a mall bookstore without seeing Where's Waldo books on display out front. And I think Sofia was supposed to be just a guest star, but I guess the jokes just flowed so easily, they decided to keep her as a regular.
I highly recommend watching all seven seasons. The show was excellent from start to finish with only a few duds in the seven years it was on. These four were very professional, with three out of the four doing a lot of stage work. Betty White was the only one who never did stage work but she had been doing television since the 1950s.
In the first season, Dorothy and Rose were 55 (Bea and Betty were actually 63), Blanche (and Rue) was over 50, but claimed to be no older than 45. Sophia was 80. The ages fluctuated slightly over the seven seasons.
There is a hilarious episode of Married......with Children that uses the Where's Waldo and it's beyond hilarious. Season 8 episode 18 "Get Outta Dodge."
One of your comments made me think you may be confused how the characters are related and why they're living together. I think they were all friends, and they were all single retirees living on fixed incomes, so they decided to share a house to save money. I forget which one originally owned the house and offered to let the others move in; I'm thinking either Dorothy or Blanche.

Actually, Rue was the youngest of them all:
Betty White: 1922-2021
Bea Arthur: 1922-2009
Estelle Getty: 1923-2008
Rue McClanahan: 1934-2010

Some of the references Dorothy makes are old but they are funny

Mario looks like Kobe Bryant and Nicole looks like my teacher from Highschool and her name was also Nicole
A lot of older women dye their hair. My aunt Helen had black hair (her original color) all her life.

Where's Wally (Waldo for the US) is a British book series.
