  • A character study on our favorite Earth Kingdom tyrant. After reading all of Ruins of the Empire, I knew I had to make a video about her, and this gave me enough material to work with, so here it is!
    Hope you enjoy!

Kuvera's one of my fav villains, cause she's not really wrong... and its easy to see how someone that started good could go bad so easily and still think what they're doing is right...

great video. The show should have done more with Kuvira. They should have showed us how and why she went from an idealistic soldier to a hardened ruler.
For example, in the last airbender, we're shown right away in the third episode how cruel the fire nation is, and that they're on the verge of winning the war. You can easily connect the dots and see how people like Jet and Hama wanted to strike back against the fire nation. Jeong Jeong became embittered and jaded after years of hard war, and seeing the suffering his nation was inflicting on the rest of the world clearly did a number on his psyche. Also, we see fire nation prisons where the prisoners are tortured and forced to work for the war effort.
But in LoK, we get none of that. We're told that Kuvira is putting people into gulags and labor camps, but we don't see it. And Opal and Su(who isn't the most reliable source) claim to have seen Kuvira's atrocities. Still, the audience doesn't see it. We're constantly told how terrible Kuvira has become, but we're not shown the evidence. What happened during those three years? What atrocities has she seen? What atrocities has she committed in her campaign? What caused her to snap?
And to make matters worse, the fourth season had time to delve into Kuvira, show things from her perspective. Not the propaganda that Su gave to Korra, about how Kuvira 'betrayed' her.(sure Su. Tell Korra that your plan was to stick your head in the sand and hope that the chaos and anarchy that was rampant across the earth kingdom wasn't going to destroy Zaofu and its people. Enlightened, my ass). Just remove the useless stuff about Tenzin's children searching for Korra and use that time for Kuvira and her stories.
The sad thing is, in my opinion, Book 4 had the potential to be the best season in LoK. But the writing seems to have regressed from books 1 and three. In Book 1, Amon and the equalists are talking about how non-benders are being mistreated by benders. and the season shows it. The triple threat triad is first shown extorting a non-bender, giving strong evidence to the equalists rhetoric. Korra even threatens to beat an equalist protester for information about where to find a missing Bolin.
In book 3, we see that Lin clearly has issues with her extended family. The next episode shows how and why it all happened. Everyone is afraid of the red lotus, saying how the four of them could bring down the world. The season shows us how powerful the red lotus is. They cripple Korra, kill the earth queen, and bring anarchy to a nation the size of Europe and Asia put together. Very powerful stuff that'll stay with you.
In book 4, none of that. Nothing from Kuvira's perspective on how she changed for the worse. It's basically this: Korra and her friends are good, Kuvira and her side is bad. Don't argue with us, just accept it.

Ginger Moore I highly recommend it. Watch Avatar: The Last Airbender first if you haven’t already since this is a sequel series.

Ruins of the Empire is what inspired me to make this, especially since the art is so close to the show. It caps off Kuvira's arc really well. If Zelda ever does a live reading of this comic like they have with Turf Wars, I might have to remake this. I'm glad you like this though.

The thing about Kuvira is that she does all the awful things she does because her family because Zaofu could not survive without her that's the lie she uses to justify her own actions as well as manipulating Bolin Varick and Baatar jr by forming a brand new faction the Earth Empire
