Thanks for joining us here at the Merriam Pianos UA-cam channel! Today’s video has been heavily requested to say the least as we compare what are arguably the top two all-in-one portable digital pianos currently available - the Kawai ES920 and Roland FP90X.
Very different in what they offer musically, there’s no clear cut winner between this two, but hopefully this review will help guide you to determine which might be the better fit for you.
Please like the video below, and if it’s your first time to the channel, subscribe and hit that notification bell!
    Background:
While there is a several hundred dollar difference between these two pianos, with the FP90X being the more expensive of the two, there’s not a dramatic difference in price, and both are ultimately targeted at the same end-user.
    Piano Sound:
The FP90X carries a 60 watt rating of power output, while the ES920 offers 40 watts, but even 40 watts is quite high for a portable instrument.
The FP90X is offering Roland’s brand new ‘PureAcoustic Modelling’ engine powered by their equally new BMC chip (also found in their LX series), while the ES920 offers Kawai’s Harmonic Imaging Engine XL engine.
Playing them side by side. The FP90X sounds very immediate and right in your face, while the ES920 sounds closer to what you would get as a player sitting behind an acoustic piano. There’s no right or wrong here, but these are interesting observations to note.
Our impression is that the FP90X would be more versatile for tracking, but those used to an acoustic piano experience might prefer the Kawai.
All of this said, both instruments offer quite a bit of control as far as manipulating the sound is concerned - Kawai’s Virtual Technician feature on the ES920, and Roland’s Piano Designer function on the FP90X - so both pianos are quite customizable to the users preferences.
Moving beyond the acoustic piano sound and into quantity of sounds, the FP90X boasts in excess of 300 sounds (though most are GM2), while the ES920 offers around 50 or so. This might not matter to some, but could be quite significant to others. The E pianos are superb on both instruments.
In terms of polyphony, the FP90X has limitless polyphony, and 256 notes for all other tones, while the ES920 has 256 notes across the board.
Both have an on-board equalizer which is a huge plus for real time playing, and the ES920 offers on-board auto accompaniment, whereas you need an app to access the auto accompaniment on the FP90X.
    Piano Action:
There’s a pretty significant difference with regards to the actions these instruments are offering. The FP90X features the PHA50 wooden hybrid action, while the ES920 used Kawai’s Responsive Hammer III (RHIII) plastic action.
The RHIII is widely held as the top plastic action on the market and is even used by Nord for their top instruments, but the PHA50 undoubtedly has a durability advantage by virtue of it being made out of wood.
While the sensitivity is quite similar and both have a triple sensor and escapement, they ultimately feel quite different, so a player's preference will largely come down to playing style.
While we feel the RHIII is better for finesse playing, and the PHA50 is better for more heavy handed styles and trying professional gigging scenarios, your mileage may vary.
    Summary:
More than any other difference, these instruments sound extremely distinct from one another, so if you can compare them in person, it would be quite beneficial. Other big differences include the weight difference, on-board accompaniment on the ES920, and a big difference in terms of the touch, as well as the speaker output. At the end of the day, these are two class leading options that pianists are frankly lucky to be able to choose from in 2021.

Thanks for the Kawai 920 recommendation. I ordered mine yesterday on your word alone. I actually own a 1985 KG-2D in impeccable condition but my neighbors wouldn't appreciate it and it would take up the majority of my studio apartment. I was looking for the most acoustic feeling/sounding keyboard under 2 grand and it seems like this is one of the best. I had a CP300 for years but only used it for a few weddings and gigs. The action was so stiff and it weighed a ton. I'm very much looking forward to having a "piano" at my disposal once more. Thanks again, all the best.

I bought the ES920 about a month ago, after looking at endless online reviews and then trying out in the showroom. I'd say all digital pianos have different pluses and minuses but as a gigging musician (who's not getting any younger!), the weight was a big factor for me. I have to say I love the 920, really nice to play and great sounds, including the editable onboard effects which really allow you to shape the sounds how you want.

Yes, I'm trying to find and buy a ES920 now and agree with you. I have a Kawai MP6 Professional Stage Piano, hooked up to two 50W each KRK RP5G3 speakers, and I love its sound and power. There's nothing like the sound of quality external speakers that really make the MP6 sound like a true Grand Piano and other things. However, I am in the Philippines now, the MP6 is not with me, and looking for something LIGHT and portable -- thus the ES920, but I could only find ONE in the Philippines for $2,650 which is crazy. So the search is one again for something less.

Got my ES920 and spent a month with it, it's soooo good. I spent like the whole day jumping from fp90x to es920 to yamaha, also comparing them to grand pianos. The sound in ES920 is just better. It's much more real on every instrument.
Another surprising thing I found is that the control panel on ES920 is self-sufficient. You don't need any app to play along for example. everything is accessible from the piano itself. It may seem like a minor thing but it's much easier to just sit and start goofing around.
I though about MP11SE instead of ES920 because of a superior action, but it turned out that the stage pianos don't produce sound by themselves and you also need to choose the monitors (dynamics) that can cost a lot.

If you grew up playing a small spinnet piano, then played a long grand piano, you would be amazed at all of the partial harmonics you now hear. Since the Roland model easily produces these, they probably want to show off the brighter sound. The Kawai has a much stronger midrange. Maybe the FP-90x can be adjusted to sound that way. Both of these are fine instruments.

    I went with my son to the store to evaluate K ES920, R FP-90X and Y P-515.
My son finished 9y acoustic piano lessons, and plays with a very personal touch. He likes emotional pieces (e.g. Chopin) but loves to improvise on classic film music.
I was prepared with reviews like the ones from stu.
My son is looking for a DP with amplifier and speaker included. The piano shop also advised me on the 3 DP I mentioned.
My son was played more than 2 hours with the 3.
Strangely enough, the ES920 was ruled out quite quickly: the action was fragile and 'too loose', the piano sounded artificial and blurry. It was like higher frequencies were too much filtered out. (Note: only the internal speakers was tested). The piano also felt weak and not durable. I personally think that the decision from Kawai to prioritize on reducing weight is a mistake.
The choice between the FP-90X and P-515 was much more difficult.
The sound of the P-515 of the 'default piano' sounded more 'real' (less artificial), heard from a musician. The FP-90X sounded less personal, heard from an editor. (A bit also what stu mentioned about sampling versus modelling). The P515 sounded also with more detail in string sounds.coming

They say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but, for musicians, "beauty is in the EARS of the beholder". Every player responds to a different tone and touch. Thankfully, there is a plethora of excellent pianos out there for players to choose from. The most important thing is to select a piano that you personally connect with in terms of touch and tone.

Thanks to Stu's professional reviews, I decided to go with the es520 (roughly $2500usd at current exchange rates), and after the yamaha P45, two things struck me. I’ve just been checking both and have come to exactly the same view - not I admit with quite the same level of analysis. The Roland does win doesn’t it? The extra weight of the keys means you have to work harder, but the control it gives you is well worth it. The extra heft and robustness of the Roland definitely made me relax more, knowing that there wouldn’t be any thought of a rattle or vibration. Sounds, versatility, features aside, I know that I for one would play better with the Roland. Thanks so much for the review. Like the gentleman before me, I’m hugely impressed with the way youve managed to describe such subtle differences.

Thank you kindly! We appreciate the kind words and we're glad that you have found the video comparison to be helpful. Both of these pianos are powerhouses that are top of their class. With that said, they offer very different things musically. The FP90X has a heavier touch and more balanced tone versus the ES920's slightly lighter touch with a less pronounced escapement/let-off sensation and a warmer tone. Every player will have their preference, but, in either case, you're getting a truly wonderful instrument. :)

I spent weeks doing endless written and video critiques of digital pianos before going with the ES920, in part, due to the unavailability of hte 90X in Canada. My own comparative tool then side by side, is Stu's- as usual-great and well rounded analysis of both. My take is that I made the better choice, at least on the sonic take side of things. I found the 90X's immediacy to have a brittle and slightly digital sound, especially in the upper grequency range. The 920 has, according to my senses, a more naturalness to its whole keyboard. I'm sure the internal software controls are pretty equal, and in only speaking for the 920, I've found the keyboard action to feel incredibly similar to a good keybed/board in an acoustic. The onboard EQ is very useable too.

Among these three I've only checked out the ES920, but immediately took a huge liking to it. Absolutely fantastic reviewing. By far the best DP reviews on YT (that I've seen). Congrats for that, and THANK YOU for the obvious objectivity and no BS approach, even though we are aware you are representing a commercial interest. Subscribed!
Only complaint I have, is that while I see some reviewers (surprisingly few!) mention what the accompianment capabilities are of model X, I have yet to see anyone compare the quality (when doing comparos).
And there are pretty wide differences: How creative can you get while you're playing and you want "the band" to follow you (i.e. how flexible is the arrangement function)? How up to date are the sounds and rhythms (the arranger sounds of my 1997 Roland are woefully out of date, for instance)? Related to that, how realistic does it sound? I've heard snippets of some of these multi thousand dollar pianos and they sound like $200 Casios in the arrangement department! :D How about just a quick sample of playing with both arrangers (well in the case of the Roland, using their app)?
Heck, I would LOVE it for someone, anyone (but you would be preferred!) to do an "arranger" comparison at different price points (maybe at $1K and below, then at $2K and below or something).
I guess it's a niche feature bc almost no one really talks about it...you see it on the lower end "keyboards", and on the VERY highest end DP's, which I find interesting. Best current model arranger keyboard that's under $2K right now is probably the $850 Yamaha DG-670, as they put arranger tech in that sub-$1K unit that is much more advanced than what is even in their high end Clavinova's (I guess the new model Clavs will get this thought). Amazing stuff really, what they are doing in that space.

Outstanding review - very thoughtful. It's 2022 and I'm in the market for a new keyboard. I basically play for myself. Years ago, at the recommendation of a keyboard and Piano expert, after much personal research, many reviews, and some previously very poor keyboards, I made my selection. After hearing 1 minute of a product demo, I was blown away, and immediately ordered a Kawai MP6 Digital Stage Piano ($1,400 back then), hooked it up to two KRK RP5G3 speakers, and that put me in heaven. What deep, rich, true quality sound. I thought I was playing a true acoustic piano. However, I moved to the Philippines and can't ship it here. So I'm looking for a replacement and thinking about the Kawai ES920 or Yamaha P515B -- if I can find them. I love Kawai units. I thought your assessment of the Kawai and Roland were very good and fair. Subjectively, to me, the Kawai models seems to have a more "human" feel and sound including distance. It does not feel/sound like an artificial recreation of something real -- it feels/sounds like the real thing (acoustic pianos) designed by humans rather than robots in its touch, feel, feedback, tone, etc. Rolands, Yamahas, and others are often "in your face" and sometimes difficult to feel any "warmth" or human connections to the units -- although the sounds can be very good. I like the "organic" humanistic recreated sounds of the Kawai units, that is the best description I can give, and it is only my opinion. The personal work the Kawai people must be putting into their creations to create truly authentic/organic sounds must be incredible.

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! I certainly agree regarding your assessment about Kawai. The warm, nuanced SKEX samples establishes an authenticity that is very difficult to match. That sense of realism really does help to establish a strong connection between the player and the instrument, which is crucial in order for one to play at their expressive best. :)

The Manila supplier of Kawaii instruments is out of stock of most kawaii models. I was eyeing the ES920 since I started looking for digital pianos in May but theyve been out of stock the whole time. Only the es110 is available.
So I got the FP90x. It's absolutely gorgeous and addictive to use also.
The P515 is available the last time I looked.

@@rolexmarcelo3218 Yes, the ES110 is all over the place. Why do the Philippines only seem to sell the lowest level models. However, the ES110 is discontinued and there are big discounts. It is now replaced by the newly released ES120 with SIGNIFICANT improvements. If you want an ES110, then try to wait for a ES120. It will cost more, but it has a lot more. Could be a long wait. I love Kawai units, I owned an MP6 Professional Stage Piano (Replaced by the MP7SE and MP11SE), and it was mind-blowing hooked to my two 50-watt each external speakers. But I'm looking for something lighter, more portable, and much less expensive. I just purchased the Yamaha P125 ($765) on Lazada. Why? Because it was about the only one of halfway decent quality in the Philippines that I can find, not because I wanted it. It was available and sounded better to me than the ES110. I have not seen the ES120 on sale in the Philippines yet. Heads up, if you have the money and can find one, the Roland FP-30X ($799 in the U.S.) sounds really good. The FP-60X (around $1,249 in the US) sounds even better and filled full of extras and larger speakers. If I could find one in the Philippines for a decent price, I would have bought the Kawai ES120 or Roland FP60X.

@@rolexmarcelo3218 Thank you for your advice. I will look at the FP90x. At this point, I'm looking for anything somewhat realistic to play. I had the same experience with the Manila supplier. It appears whatever Kawai I want, they don't have it. I started looking for something less out here in the Philippines, and was going to get the ES110 - about the only Kawai ES series you can find out here in great quantities. However, Kawai just discontinued the ES110 in 2022 and replaced with the ES120 with important performance upgrades. So I am trying to wait for the ES120 replacement, but can't find any. So I wrote an email to Kawai HQ in Japan, and said "if your suppliers can't support the customers here, I should be able to order direct from Japan." I received an email from Japan saying "the Manila supplier has the ES120 (I have never seen it advertised), and they would tell the supplier to contract me. " Well the supplier never did contact me. I may give them a call. I asked them about an ES920 once (they had only one) and the Manila dealer was asking almost double the price. Forget it. Maybe I should open a dealership in Cebu City and service all of Philippines.

As always a great video review from you. I have recently upgraded to Kawai 920S which I love, primarily bought for the warm tone, light weight, wonderful action and USB recording facilities, but there is even more when you add the bluetooth audio. I use that for enjoying UA-cam sound and online radio etc from my phone or iPad.
It makes a full really nice sound, particularly if you listen in correct stereo while sat at the piano. But I also find it great for transcribing half forgotten songs by playing along through the same built-ion speakers. You can instantly correct to the right note, foe example.
The virtual technician is also great and I found it useful to (surprisingly for me), set to heavier action, to get access to a wider tonal range, add additional cabinet sound making it feel even more like a very solid acoustic piano, and add extra sympathetic resonance when sustain pedal is used giving a still more sparkling sound in the top register. I think it is possible to swop settings by file from USB.
I still love my even lighter but less feature-packed Kawai ES110 - still a very good and highly affordable alternative and have featured both on my channel.

I noticed this a while back listening to different reviews between Roland and other brands. Lets say your in a room and yours eyes are closed, you hear someone playing an instrument you can turn and face the music (Point of reference of the sound). The sampling from Roland when you listen to it sometimes sounds like your the one playing the music, because the sampling is so close to the piano. So its kind of playing havoc if your listening to it from speakers across the room, because your hearing it at a distance but the sampling is still wanting you in the middle of the instrument. I think its why some people don't like playing with it in a band, because the point of reference issue naturally draws your attention to the piano even if its not the lead part.

I bought this piano a while ago and am very pleased with the action and sound it is certainty streets ahead of it's predesesors. A big bonus to me was at an open mic. The supplied pedal does not waltz around the floor as it has a huge rubber pad to stabilize it. Also if you plug your mic in and use the line out for both mic and piano you have separate on board control. (No more arguments with the sound guy) the internal monitors stay on too when on stage which is a major advantage against others you can turn them off if you don't need them but it obviates the need for a separate monitor. The controls a very user friendly and there's no sub menus to navigate.
My advice if your planning to upgrade from your current piano is be prepared to not want to play any piano that is not better than this. It's the Ferrari of speaker inclusive pianos. However I found it quite heavy to lift and transport. So I invented a contraption that makes it easy peasy. An heavy duty X frame drilled holes in the leg bases with hospital trolley casters bolted through with two brakes. It works perfect. Just wheel it out of the house to the vehicle with a cover over held with elastic hook ropes. And without disassembly wheel it into the van and the reverse procedure at the other end. Save time and energy and it's not fiddly.

I'm a fan of both. That said I'm very frugal. For that reason, I favor the es920. Also it weighs less, and any wight savings is a real plus. I purchased the DGX-670 for a few different reasons. It is a budget instrument that sounds very good in many respects. It's also rather large and heavy. I had to get a neighbor to help me get it up half a flight of stairs. This would be true of the Roland too as it and the DGX weigh about the same. In this video, I like the sound of the Kawai. I recommend people buying the least expensive instrument that will meet their needs in terms of their own playing ability. I've been a Roland fan for years, but today my vote goes to the Kawai. As for the DGX, it's half the price of the Kawai, but it's so complex combined with some extreme annoyances, that people might want to reject it simply for over complexity. I have barely scratched the surface of its auto-play features. One annoyance was that when I wanted just a single trombone voice for the lead, the only way I could get it is to switch the voice to monophonic mode (no polyphony). It's just another area where the DGX is just plain weird. The minute I shifted to automated mode the lead became two horns instead of just one, and it took a long time to figure out what to do. The instrument just doesn't act as one familiar with music would expect.
Back to the fp90x and the es920, I would say a more mellow treble is extremely important and that's a another reason to go for the es920. The Roland is just too much bang for too much buck. That said no matter which one you choose, you will be happy with it.

Wow, a comment from someone comparing these with the DG670!!! Hallelujah! :D I've been combing the internet looking for a "proper" DP (focused on action, piano sound first, other stuff secondary), that ALSO has as good (or at least close) to the amazing arranger functions on the DG670 (which are top class IMO, some truly new and innovative stuff in that model!
I've currently got a Roland DP from 1997 that was IIRC around $4k at the time, and it's past time to get a newer model for a few reasons. Bad thing is that I can't afford a $4K DP right now, so I am looking at a much more modest price point this time around.
Absolutely LOVE the arranger functions on the 670, but the speakers are sub-par and underpowered for that price point IMO (though they do sound good for the wattage, I admit). Also the shared mic/line out is a deal breaker for me - I cannot believe they did that.
I fully get your complaint about the complexity for someone who "just wants to play" though...for me, that is actually a bonus. I'm a tinkerer by nature, and I love to get into menus, and subtle settings and find cool things, etc. Yamaha does a HORRIBLE job of explaining their super powerful arranger functions, though, and it's almost like you just need to spend a few days learning how stuff works by trial and error (speaking about the arranger functionality only).
I watched my uncle play my Dad's 670, and just get frustrated trying to get appropriate solo instrument sounds (as opposed to the varying degrees of "trumpet" for instance...the straight tone, vs the tone with the "extras" depending on how hard you press, etc. I get it, but that complexity can also add a LOT of richness and accuracy if you are trying to recreate a specific sound. Learning HOW to use it, and use it well, is not easy though.
My perfect replacement DP would be something under $2K, with a full console, 4 speakers, plenty of wattage (I'm already outside the $2k budget with just those requirements!), great action and piano sound (but not the best, just good enough for daily solo piano practice) AND a decent arranger. Think something like the Roland 90X or ES920 or even P515, with that 760 arranger. Chef's kiss! :D

    • @Instrumental-Covers
      @Instrumental-Covers 2 роки тому +1

@@bruceincola8692 I also have the DGX 670, and honestly I don't understand why some people find it so complex. Maybe because I have also had the DGX 660 before, and at least two Yamaha PSR-S series of their professional arrangers, which are very similar to the DGX670. There is no digital piano with arranger functionality that comes close to the DGX 670 in terms of the quality and complexity of the arranger. Regarding the wattage on the DGX 670, which is 12 watts total: in audio, you need 10 times the power to hear a sound twice as loud, which means you would need 12x10=120 watts of power to hear the sound twice as loud as the DGX 670. I find the DGX670 to be really loud for home use, in fact, it would be extremely uncomfortable to crank it up all the way. To put it in numbers: let's say the DGX 670 has speakers with a typical sensitivity of 90 dB each driver. Since you have 2 drivers, you get 93 dB at 1 watt. Therefore, you could expect about 97 dB of loudness at full volume. That is very, very uncomfortably loud already. If you want to get twice as loud (about 107 decibels), you need 10 times the power, so you need 120 watts from the amplifier. A typical upright piano at normal playing produces about 90 dB. I have tested my DGX 670 against a baby grand piano, and they produce similar volume levels. Unless you are trying to compete with a concert grand piano, I don't think you really need more power for typical home use. Most digital pianos consume just a few watts (between 2-5 watts) at normal listening volumes, despite their amplifier rating, which is a misleading number for several reasons. To put things in perspective: the Roland FP90X, rated at 60 watts of amplifier power, consumes only 2 watts of amplifier power at half the volume.

@@Instrumental-Covers I don't know if you will see this as the review is old. I've played the FP-90x now and was somewhat disappointed. It is a good instrument, but the action is stiff and sluggish. The only thing I can think is that over time the action breaks in and becomes more fluid. I can tell you straight out that my DGX-670 combined with Pianoteq Pro sounds better. I could not find an acoustic piano voice on the 90x that actually satisfied me. It is a good instrument and I'm sure anyone who buys it will like it, but it doesn't sound better than the DGX coupled with Pianoteq, and I honestly prefer the feel of the action on the DGX. As for complexity of the DGX, it is driving me nuts. I still don't understand the thing. I do like the Roland 708 upright a lot and it is very similar or better sounding to my Pianoteq Pro / DGX combo voice. Some other Kawai pianos such as the CA-99 and DG-30 sound very good. A lot of the auxiliary sounds on the FP-90x are completely awesome, for example the Rhodes sound Stu played on the Roland. The DGX is hard to beat for the money. It has improved my overall experience which was previously Pianoteq Pro by itself, driven by a Casio PX-150. When Stu compares the actions. I would have to agree with what he says. I enjoy more mellow pianos and detest bright harsh pianos. I'm not a banger. As good as Stu is, he is more of a banger than me, and I don't come close to his ability. Excellent video, the difference with the keyboard bed which is very important in making a selection. I went to a local music store and I loved the Roland 90X PHA-50 keys that has wood as part of the material, vs the all plastic Kawai keys. The Roland keys have a more solid feel and more like a real piano. This cannot be overlooked. The Kawai keys are a little too light and feels more like a keyboard vs a piano. The Roland feels more like a piano and I like it better. With that being said, I prefer the sound of the Kawai by a little bit.
The 90X has pure acoustic modeling which is better than the older supernatural sounds of the older Roland 90. So they moved up in quality a bit with the 90X. Both the Kawai and Roland are very good and you could be happy with either. But I am going for the Roland due to the key material, feel of the keys and the increased amount of different sounds it has vs the Kawai. The 3 band EQ is also very good to get a warmer or more modern pop sound. In addition, there is more watts on the amp of the Roland with its 4 speakers giving you a more satisfying sound. He is right the Roland top end can sound a little shrill. Thankfully in the settings you have individual control for each key to be more forward or a little laid back and warmer. I got the 2nd C above middle C and all the notes after and reduced the character by -1 and now the shrill is gone. Also lifting the lid adds a little more space.
Honest though both piano are really good and I think I would be happy with either one.

Wow, there’s so many things that are red flags for the Kawai. It’s reliance on the app, makes me nervous that they might one day deprecate the app and then the keyboard has limited customizations.
When he discusses the duplex scaling problems in the Roland, it should be a negative, but it only emphasizes the fact that you cannot adjust any such settings directly on the Kawai keyboard and you can fix that on the FP90X without any 3rd party tablet or computer.
So yeah, this is a tough choice, but the bigger picture would have me going for the Roland as you just get more all around.
    Polyphony Winner - Roland
    Direct Customization - Roland
    Instrument Quantity Selection - Roland
    Build Quality - Roland
    Speaker output - Roland
    Weight - Kawai
Keyboard Action - He says the Roland is similar to the higher end Kawai Action
I guess everyone trying to push their favorite brand will toss out all the areas where the Roland might be better or the Kawai might be better, but experience will win out in the end.

Both of these heavyweight portable digitals are amazing instruments, but they offer a different touch and different tonal flavour. Every pianist will prioritize different elements or features of a digital piano, so the choice will always be very personal. Thanks again and all the best!

THIS! This is how you should do all your videos, hook us with the instrument’s piano sound and then get into the details!
One thing that needs to be discussed here though, the Kawai is much harder to resell, because the higher end professionals tend to trust Roland and the lower end beginners don’t really know who Kawai is and that puts them in a tough spot. I had the ES520 and loved it (bought it for my mom and sold it when she passed away), but even in a sellers market it was hard to resell.

That is interesting to hear. In the Canadian market, that is certainly not the case. Kawai is one of the top three or four digital piano lines in our market (along with Roland, Yamaha, and Casio). The ES920 model is perpetually backordered for us because it is so popular. Not that we get used ones in (people tend to hold onto them for a very long time), but I would be quite confident it would be scooped up within a day or two given how fiercely popular the model is here.

Spent ages going from the es920 to Roland fp90x really wanting to like the Kawai (it’s so much lighter) but wasn’t inspired by the action (I normally perform on acoustic). My previous stage piano was a Roland RD700 which has been brilliant (I’ve never been let down by my Rolands) so maybe I’ve got biased towards their actions? I didn’t have them side by side (I had to go to two different stores but they were only across the road from each other) so it maybe that the ‘feel’ of the Roland gave the illusion of a better sound? Basically it was an instrument I felt inspired to play which I just didn’t get with the Kawai (I really wanted to like it, lighter and slightly cheaper). Anyway, really happy with the Roland and was the right decision for me. The es920 has had some brilliant reviews so I originally thought that that would win the day.

Cont. helped to gain more control. I did feel I had more dynamic control with the Roland but might just be individual thing, I didn’t have them side by side. All of the tech features aside, the real bargain if you want a "Piano", is the Kawai CA 49, due to the action being so much superior and closer to an actual piano. That the price dropped down to $2299 is also notable. IMO, for a better action, it really should be the FP-90x and the CA 49 here. ie - "I have a little more than 2K, what is the best option?
And I agree with Jean Hasdenteufel - Kawai is making the best pianos for the money currently. Roland is a close second, but Kawai is doing better with tech, IMO.

      @josephoberlander 3 роки тому

@@Zoco101 The Kawai and Roland ( plus Yamaha ) all use the same action in their keyboards from about $600 to about $2000. It's plastic, heavy, and variations of the same meh. The CA 39 is the same.
The CA 49 uses an action that is built like an upright piano. Shorter than a grand, but with a stick, pivot points, and so on like a piano. I've tried the Kawai Progressive Hammer Action III and the Roland version of it, and they are better than the stuff below them, but still, IMO, short of a piano.
Usually you need to move up to $4K for a real action from Yamaha. The CA49 is the least expensive piano action now, that tries to replicate the real thing, IMO, despite the lack of features - rather starkly so. From there, its really the MP-11se. Which is MUCH better than these two - worth the extra few hundred dollars - and a clear win over the Roland FP-90x.
Go try a CA 49 - its passable as a realistic piano, IMO. Or the MP-11se if you want a stage piano.

      @@josephoberlander I've tried the MP11SE briefly but didn't have access to a CA49.
Since I'm not playing or practising classical music, I don't mind slightly unorthodox plastic actions, but I like to stay informed, partly because friends and students ask me to recommend instruments. It's clear from what you say that no portable instrument is going to have an action close to that of a quality acoustic piano, and I do wonder how the VSTi fans cope with their DP/Controller actions. If the exact sound is so important, why not the action too?
But I have to say that I prefer having one of the better plastic DP actions to having a wooden one on a really cheap upright. Many uprights are just not worth producing or maintaining, and cannot keep up with an intermediate level pianist, let alone an advanced one. Remember those over-damped dinosaurs and the Chinese/Korean/East German exports of the 60s,70s & 80s? Homes and bars were littered with them. I hope that most of the bad ones have disappeared now, since they were a hindrance to piano study and performance.

After hearing Every Breath You Take on both pianos the Kawai ES920 gave me a touch of WHT (wandering hands trouble). What to do now? The comments below seem convincingly in favor of the Kawai for many reasons not the least are weight and price, but I've never owned a good DP, so it leaves me with a challenging decision. Years ago I traded one of my sculptures for a baby grand and until recently we had been inseparable. It needs repairs now and would cost a small fortune to bring it back, so my options are Roland or Kawai. Which one will make me feel like I have my baby back?

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for taking the time to tune into our video!
From my perspective, the ES920's action is far superior to the ES110. It has a much more solid feel, heavier weighting and more of the sensations of a grand piano action (namely the inclusion of let-off). While they have made some improvements to the ES120's action, which gives it more solidity and reduces key noise significantly, my preference is still the ES920. I personally find it to be a much superior feel, which is also reflected in the price gap between these pianos.
The MP11 and MP11SE are wonderful models and I would probably give them a bit of an edge over the ES920's RHIII action. With that said, it really comes down to personal preference and subjectivity, so it is awesome that you have an opportunity to test these various models out at a showroom. :)

@@MerriamPianos Hi Brent, and thanks for the quick response! Actually, as to Kawai, only the 120 is available (Sam Ash Hollywood). By "heavier weighting" (920 to 120), do you mean "heavier feel"? Actually, my hands prefer a light touch, like an old Steinway. My 110 causes hand fatigue after about an hour (my MP11 does not, but it's 3000 miles away and damaged). I have giant hands / super long fingers (C to Ab and sometimes A) and reach the back of the black keys. So I returned the infamous Casio 3000 almost immediately a couple of years ago. If you know, does the 920 have a longer pivot than the 520 / 120 (I believe the pivots on these are the same)? It's hard to know what causes the fatigue - "heavy" action, short pivot, hard landing, something else. I'd prefer the 120's lighter weight (third floor apartment, no elevator, need to take on Amtrak in late spring, no vehicle here for gigs and must use public transportation here in LA), so it's sort of "fatigue (body) versus fatigue (hands)." I'd only trade the 120's 25 pound weight for the 920's 37 pound weight if the keybed were less fatiguing. The sounds / features in either will be fine for me. With that in mind, which (120, 920 or even 520) would best suit my needs? Thanks, Jeff Newton

The Kawai would be perfect if it had a mic 🎤 jack and a better quality case. For this reason I might get the Roland FP90X since I sing and play. Any other solutions you would advise? Great review kind gracious loyal sir

Gustavo Paul: Remember that the FP60X has the mic input too, and it's much cheaper, and much lighter to carry than the FP90X. I think that the 60X is Roland's best value for money piano and possibly the best deal available among digital pianos. Roland sounds have improved a lot. I wouldn't rely (solely) on the internal speakers of any portable instrument, not even for practice, and if you're not getting exactly the patches you want anyway, why buy the FP90X? It's the most expensive "portable" digital piano there is. Anything costing more than 1500 euros has to belong to a superior piano category in my book: stage piano, hybrid, whatever...
But you love the Shigeru sound. A tiny mixer will cost almost nothing and will probably give better and quicker mic mixing results at gigs. You might be able to velcro it onto another piece of equipment to save bringing a mixer stand. I presume that the ES920 has a stereo line input.

@@Zoco101 thank you kind sir. I ended up getting the Kawai ES520 since the 920s have stopped production for now. Which mixer do you recommend? I’d like to be able to sing and play

I’m buying the kawai es920. I also bought a Kithouse s9 wireless mic that sounded beautiful for 219cdn. The price if es920+ Kithouse is still way lower than the fp90x.

Beautifully clear comparison. I've returned to it several times in my efforts to decide the piano I need.
The calm and painstaking approach seen here is much preferable, in my view, to the more dramatic effects of more recent videos.

It is really pity, that the Kawai doesn't have a USB-Audio connection. I really like how it feels. I suspect the Bluetooth MIDI to device and then the audio back through the Bluetooth to the piano would have a substantial delay.

      @MerriamPianos  16 днів тому +1

There would likely be some latency in that latter scenario. It will be interesting to see if Kawai follows suit with other manufacturers by including USB-Audio interfaces into their next generation models.

In the TV world people calibrate colors for best color accuracy. How about in digital piano world having a setting configuration to produce famous piano sounds? Steinway and Fazioli to name two. I realize there are many music styles, but I think classical music does not get much attention anymore.

There are a number of VST plug-ins that model and sample famous/iconic piano sounds. But, I do agree that it would be an exciting feature to include onboard a digital piano. :)

The only problem with the Roland is that when you look at the bundles from each company the furniture-type stands are way off in price. The Kawai is right at $259 and the Roland is areound $500. That means if you only want the keyboard and stand the Kawai is around $2150 and the Roland is around $2650. For about the same stand I would say the Roland seems to be a little price gouging.😮

There are some pretty large gaps between manufacturers when it comes to accessories such as stands and triple pedalboards. I am not entirely sure as to the reasoning behind it, but, in my experiences, both Kawai and Roland make incredibly durable and reliable accessories for their instruments.

Roland is overpriced (I had FP-90x with a stand and 3 other Roland digital pianos).

you did a good thing with action by putting your iPhone on three keys-the Kawai would go down and the Roland wouldn't-I found this very revealing.
