      I'm on team all 3. I love Explorers & Les Pauls and I've always wanted an RD, so Lee's RD is the first one of his sigs I'm getting my paws on. Then I'll get his Explorer and Les Paul so I can have his signature series.

    I first saw a RD in one of Fluff's videos and thought it looked weird, but the more I see them the more I'm digging the design! It looks really classy with the Artisan design...with that control layout it kinda reminds me of the PRS Mark Tremonti Concept guitar, love it!!

      @MurrayWilliams 6 років тому

      Stratplayer05 yes ... not to be too much of a troll but artisan is different from artesian. Like Stratplayer said ... one is a spring and the other is something made by an artist. Great video though.

      Murray Williams ahhhhh ... sorry to disappoint but artisan is not something made by an artist. An artisan is a skilled craftsperson. You know, the kind of person you buy cool looking stuff from at a fair that ends up on a dusty shelf. :) A luthier could be described as an artisan while some are true artists. Maybe you're thinking of artisanal?

    I've never heard of Lee Malia or his band before, but I've been very impressed with his signature guitars. P90 in the neck and a Hum in the bridge is just the perfect combo IMHO, if it's well balanced. The only knock against the guitar, for me personally, are those inlays.

    That chord progression is also the chorus of The Poison by Bullet For My Valentine. It just has less bottom chugg and more technical melodic playing over top of it. You can do a lot with one chord progression and make an entirely different song

    I love the inlay work on this one and the Gibson guitars. It is fru fru which I like, but not over done, this is a subjective opinion of course, because I already see comments below stating they hate the artwork. The gold hardware is awesome as well. I do not like the walnut finish though, wish it came in blue:) I also want to say, your demo reviews are excellent, I see a lot on YT, and you actually play as much if not more than the others, which really gives us a chance to hear the guitar, thanks for your work and reviews!

    *Hunter, brother, it's "Artisan" (pronounced Art-eh-zan), which means "skilled worker". "Artesian" with a "E" is a method of drilling wells. Hated to bring it up, but everything else is 100%!*

      While I have you for a sec, could you do some of us old arthritics a favor and address weight whenever possible? That RD looks gorgeous and sounds amazing, but if it's a chunker like my old GIbby I'd never be able to play it these days. If it's down around eight as opposed to the literal thirteen of my old beast, it becomes a possibility again.
      BTW - your reviews are some of the only ones on UA-cam that I trust, because the others are typically "This is what it is, let's play it." and that's it. You do actual reviews and give the bad. Best shit around, bro.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  6 років тому +9

      Thanks dude! Pushing honesty in the guitar review scene is something I strive for, otherwise what's the point of the video lol.
      The thing about weight is that each one can be pretty different because not all wood grows with the same density, but this particular one is about 8 pounds. I also don't have a scale so I'm kind of guestimating lol

    I got an Epi Artisan Les Paul as a graduation present and when it arrived I had the same problem with the unpolished frets, bends felt like I was moving the string across sandpaper! I was able to get them polished and now the guitar plays like a dream but I can’t help but be kind of PO’d that a guitar worth almost a grand shipped in poorer condition than really cheap guitars I’ve played... But after I fixed it it’s probably my favorite guitar.

    @ddkguitars4095 6 років тому

    You are totally correct about Epiphone quality control it is terrible I had to return three Les Paul custom pro in the past.
    Do to it being in terrible condition when it arrived and I'm not talking about small imperfections to.
    I had them come with things just like you mentioned tuners that had to been replaced, frets that were too sharp on the corner or needed to be polished more, huge paint in Corrections and finally the worst one extreme fret buzzing. no matter what I did or how I did it I could not get rid of the extreme buzzing all over the neck.
    You would think after purchasing a $650 guitar you wouldn't have to deal with all of these issues but sadly I did and it completely ruined the experience I had with Epiphone in the past. They just don't make them like how they used to anymore.

    I replaced the tuners on mine immediately, they felt like garbage and were the weakest point. Now the guitar holds tune perfectly. I also had grimey frets and polished them, it made the guitar feel double it’s value just doing the tuners and polishing frets. Great review as always.

    The dummy coil isn't a particularly revolutionary idea; some switchable humbuckers actually have them built-in -- e.g. the EMG 81TW and 89 contain three separate coils, with the third coil (the dummy coil) placed behind the coil used in single mode. I'm kinda surprised they aren't all like that, really.

    Dear agufish and people watching agu's videos, I am thinking of buying a new guitar. I can't make up my mind between 2 guitars. The lee malia epiphone signature explorer, and the jim root fender tele. Both guitars aren't sold in shops near me, here in Holland, so I will have to order them, that means that I can't try them out in stores myself. Can someone who tried both tell me if what is the diffenece in playability of both guitars? How does the neck compare? And is the fretwork comparable between the two? I once ordered a 500 euro jackson, and the neck and frets were horrible, and i am affraid the explorers neck and frets aren't near as good as the tele. I mainly play metal'ish genres and pop-punk. I am not much of a shredder, but i do like to put little licks and melodic parts in between my riffing. I would like to know which one of the two would likely be more suitable for my kind of playing. I know both guitars are in a quite different price range, but they both seem like pretty solid guitars. Is the tele worth the 400 more over the explorer?

      Antonio TF I'm the other way, I have a 76 Gibson Les Paul Artisan and I actually like the Epiphone Artisan headstock better in terms of looks.

    It might be worth checking out on the channel but have you ever tried out the LTD X-Tone models?? I think the Pc-1 and Ben Weinman are the only 2 still made but the Pc-2 is AMAZING.

    I bought one of these and also had the same problem with the frets being scratchy. Even after polishing them with d'addario fret polish kit, just couldn't fix it. I'm sending it back therefore. Might look into an ibanez iron label instead

    Rob Chapman also disliked the RD, dunno if it was the frets or just overall. The neck pickup although having a dummy coil hummed like hell..

      Zyx Yeah, I just saw that Anderton's video prior to this one. He was less than kind to it. I have tried a couple of the RD guitars and generally came away unimpressed. The Explorers were better but with the several I've tried were all over the map quality wise.

    I just got one of these, can’t believe how terrible the tuners are! Other than that I like it a lot overall. Might swap the nut out as well as the tuners.

  • @sixstringer3783
    @sixstringer3783 6 років тому

    There seems to be some production problems with that model it's not the first time I've heard of tuner problems I have to many guitars but I'm gonna make room for that I'm dying to gut one put Seymour Duncan's in it and add some hipshot locking tuners there is near none of these in stores yet ??? so clearly there is some issues ,otherwise awesome!

      Probs not, for the same reason I've skipped the Jim Root Strat haha. Same pickups, same design, same factory, just different shape and without the dummy coil. I picked the RD b/c I've never played one before

    • @agufish
      @agufish  6 років тому +2

      Absolutely. As long as you buy from a reputable retailer with a good returns policy (like Sam Ash, check the link in the description) in case something goes wrong, it’s worth taking a punt on if you want a nice workhorse of an RD!

    If anyone cares the frets on my Artisan Les Paul were just as scratchy and awful when I got it - maybe a symptom of cost-cutting on this line as they're the most pricey models in their range. The LP doesn't even come with a gig bag.
