What Abu Taymiyyah just described is called spaced repetition in cognitive psychology. This "softening" just means to recite after having some time in between. In contrast to where he initially did rote memorisation, which is is also known as cramming. I highly highly highly recommend you read the book called "Make it stick" by Peter C. Brown et al. It describes recent scientific discoveries like spaced repetition among others in a very light way.

For those who want to memorize the Qur’an: Reduce the number of verses or pages you memorize each day and more than the repetition and keep the continuity and keep asking for forgiveness
@@aimanakbar7961 There are many of them, thank God If you want to memorize the Qur’an and the rules of recitation, you must: 1) Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hosary 2) Ali bin Abdul Rahman Al-Hudhaifi 3) Ibrahim Al-Akhdar And many others

Purify your intentions and seek help from Allāh. This is my method: Memorize a verse by first reading (not reciting) it quickly several times. Then repeat it several times without reciting it with your voice (as in read it, I do it moderately or fastly), then repeat it several times reciting it with your voice. Then repeat it along the verse which comes before it, in other words if you have memorized verse no.3, then first recite verse no.2 then recite verse no.3 and keep repeating it several times. Then move on and do the same, until you memorize 3-5 verses, then you can either recite from the beginning to make it more solid unless it is a long Sūrah, in that case you can either begin reciting from a little bit behind, not overburdening yourself. Finally, leave it for a while and then come back to it after few hours to revise it, you will have it either memorized or forgotten but in both cases it will make it more solid and stay in your mind.

In shaa Allah I will try this method. My memory has never been great Subhanallah but after having Covid inna lillaahi wa inna illayhi raji’un I often muddle my words in English so trying to memorise Qur’an is very difficult. I often can’t even recite some words aloud which is really frustrating. I would also love to master the Arabic language in shaa Allah. I will make so much dua to fulfill my dream of being able to recite Qur’an correctly and to speak Arabic fluently bi ithnillah ta’alaa!
In Bangladesh, hifz madrasas -- sometimes, the first year the child is only reading a small portion of the Quran the whole day and recites to his teacher until he finishes the khatm, 1 or 2 times I think. When they start memorizing, they recite the page they will memorize tomorrow, during asr, many times to make it easy to memorize the next day. They memorize it the next day either during Fajr or some schools during maghrib (before sleeping). They give it to their teacher after fajr, the new memorization. Then they review the lessons of the last 7 days, then they do back review, which may be a juz or more depending on how much they've already memorized.

Mashallah I also memorize like that but there is one more method which I find very helpful and it is: When I memorize a surah, I start the memorization by memorizing the last ayah of that surah or last ayah of that page and then move upwards from downwards. In this way, after memorizing the whole surah or the whole page, when I start to recite then the more I move on the more strong my memorization is. Hope you understand and didn't get confused cause english is not my first language. Jazakallah khair
As Salaam Alaikum Waramatullah Waburkatou brothers and sisters. Please make Duas for me, I have been trying to memorize the Quran but it is not easy for me. Please make Duas for me. Thank you!
What do you mean by softening it up the day before do you mean just to read the page a couple of times or memorise some of it then completely memorise the full page the next day?
When you memorize it the first time it’ll take you a second to remember the next ayat and your able to almost recite it, or maybe you just need a peek at what the beginning of the ayat is for you to recite it, This is what I think means softening it up, because this isn’t usually acceptable by the shiek when you recite it to him, so it’s softened but when you review it again you make it smooth so you don’t have to stop
The first time you read a page you will have some mistakes in pronouncing and maybe it won't flow off the tongue like reading a page from the short surahs. Your aim is to be able to read it fluently by looking at it. Listen to the recitation and follow along a few times until you can read the whole page at once without mistakes. The next day you practise memorising and connecting the ayaat together and reciting without looking. May Allah aid you. Ameen
