Congratulations you have found Hollomon Creek Cemetery. It saddens me to see the condition now, many of my family are buried here, primary the Cleveland family. It has probably been at least 10 or 12 years since I visited there. When I was last there one of my cousins who lived in the area kept this cemetery cleaned up. Unfortunately, he passed away about 6 years ago and no one carried on the duties. Nathaniel Williams wife Louisa's parents are buried here.

That one was really overgrown. I like Cody's snake boots, good idea. Clearing those sites would be a good job for people who are assigned community work by the courts. It would benefit everybody.

Mostly it included a little church or chapel. We wish we could join you. When the kids grew up I took them around during summer vacation and we visited many cemeteries where ever we lived. (Military) I never found more peaceful places than cemeteries and it is wonderful to have conversation with the dead upon reading their stones. None ever minded and quite to the contrary, we always got back the friendliest vibes. :) I never see ghosts there, only living people not unlike us who were hoping for the same good life as we do now. One thing we all felt, some more and some less: grief, sorrow and tears. The pain of losing loved ones never leaves and their tears saturated the earth beneath our feet.
I once commiserated with a young woman who had died giving birth in the late 1800's. Next to her grave, was that of her child, who had lived 1 1/2 years more. I put my hand on her marker and felt a powerful tingling sensation, like an electrical charge. The feeling was one of gratitude for remembering her and her baby with compassion and love.
Maintaining a cemetery is a LOT of work. It looks like with a whole lot of the trees being small saplings, it was maintained to some degree up until a few years ago. It's interesting to think that a whole town of people have moved away.
How can so many people be forgotten to time? Its sad that no one visits. But I kinda hope this happens to my grave. Left alone in the would to be in peace forever. Bathed in the sun and the rain. Run over by the footsteps of animals but not people.
Every county in the USA has probationers that have to do community service. I can't think of a better service than keeping abandoned cemeteries clean and tidy. Our ancestors deserve no less. Pax Vobiscum
After watching a few of these videos you get the impression that there has been a wholesale movement of the Georgia rural population from the land to the towns and cities (?) which has taken place over the last couple of generations. I cannot believe that if the people or descendants of those buried had been there they would have let the cemeteries return to the wilderness in the way that is shown in the film. It is clear that these cemeteries were cared for and tended with fences delineating the boundary. What is shocking is the clear vandalism and desecration either by individuals or commercial interests. Those headstones have been broken with hammers and not some casual kick or push which in itself is appalling that people would deliberately damage the last resting place of somebody that once lived as we live now.
There is no respect for the living, how do we expect there is for the dead? To a lot of people, they are no more. They are of the mindset, that they are long gone, who cares? You do, I do, but a lot of people do not and that is very sad. These were our ancestors. Without them we wouldn’t exist and at the very least we should show them respect. It saddens me greatly.
Please take a look at my reply to Victor Abraham as it will tell you where some of the folks went. Most countries don't have as much land as we do. The people of European ancestry migrated to North America and just kept on spreading out!
@@Figgatella Thanks for your comments. I was raised in country where if you walked on the hill tops and ridge-lines you would find the burial barrows from the iron age and earlier. The archeologists have suggested the placement of these barrow on high was not by chance it was so people in the valleys below would feel that there ancestors would be watching them and there daily doings. The sense of awe and the connection to the past that this gives is incredible.
Many many years ago I once stumbled across some abandoned graves in Leek Staffordshire England of captured French Napoleonic soldiers who ended up staying and marrying English girls, after this I realised every grave has a story!
Callum Bush That's incredible , I never would have thought that French Napoleonic soldiers would have got as far north as Staffordshire . Very interesting to know. I would like to find out more about it. The average Napoleonic soldier would have died cica1840's / 1850's. In 2019, I visited an Old Cemetary in ( Whitfield County Georgia) that has some of my Ancestors buried there. They were born in the 1780's when GEORGE WASHINGTON was INAUGRATED as the FIRST PRESIDENT!!! It was maintained many years by a man until he passed away. It is up beside a " Logging road ", and has not been maintained or cared for In many years, and I had to be told by a gentleman that live close by, exactly where to find it.I t has alot of gravesites of local people living there in the 1700 & 1800's.

I'm wondering if a genealogy find compelled them to do that, perhaps when they were researching Daniel Boone? All speculation of course, but fun to imagine.

That was an unexpected surprise! Great finding these old graves, and those beautiful 100 foot tall or more cedar tree's with the Spanish moss. It makes the cemetery look good, but yeah your right it needs to be trimmed down some, and old piles of sticks and branches need to go. I lost count myself, I counted about 40, but lost track. It's a big cemetery, and the Boone headstone, put there by a relative, his great great great great grandson. Wonder if he's related to Daniel Boone! That would be so cool if you got all this information on the folks buried in this cemetery. Thank you for stopping and you and Cody, going out. I doubt if there Corona there in them woods, sky and trees make oxygen, just social distance at about 6 ft, ya'll be fine.
Go back and repeat your first place you made a video. Very sad this isn't kept up. This is absolutely incredible, wow can't believe how many headstones. Once it would start to be cleared out it probably is larger than you would ever think. 😁👍❤

I'm taking a break from Distance Teaching (yeah, it's a challenge for the teachers, too). I really enjoyed this video & am looking forward to the expanded version. I was curious about Nathaniel E Boone, with the replaced tombstone. Ancestry shows him in 1859 & 1860 living alone, near Lumpkin, Stewart Co., GA. In 1860, his occupation was overseer and his personal value was $3,000. He owned no real estate and he was not listed next to any Boone. On 13 July 1867 he took & signed the Voting Oath which in tiny print said that the responder denied that he "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States" and further, that he denied that he "gave aid and comfort to the enemies" [of the US]. In 1870 (55 y/o) he was living with James Boon (age 52) and presumably James's wife. They had a farm that Nathaniel was working on. The 1880 census shows him farming alone and listed as a widower. About 1883 the Georgia Property Tax Digest listed Nathaniel E Boone with debts of $1,400 and property value of $1,800. He died 1 Jan 1885. On 3rd June that year, court records show that he died intestate and that his estate was disbursed "as the law requires." There was no mention of any children. Yet Nathaniel 's memory is valued by many. I hope his Texas kin see this fascinating Sidestep Adventures video.

What a great application for a LIDAR camera equipped drone. You could cut through the vegetation and clearly see the locations of all of the stones. The latest iPad has a LIDAR camera on it, but I haven't seen it in action to know how well it would reveal all the stonework. Probably will see that on iPhones within two years though, so stay tuned. It could revolutionize old cemetery restoration/preservation and amateur archaeology in general.
People get very sensitive when they see the graves of young children. They can't imagine the pain that the family of that child went through, especially the mother. But, up until the latter part of the 20th century, it was a common plight that every family who had kids suffered. Before antibiotics and improved hygiene came into play, it wasn't uncommon for a husband and wife to have 11-15 children (no birth control either!) and maybe 2-4 actually lived to adulthood. That was normal and expected though not liked. The abnormal (and most gossiped about) was when most of the children lived!
@@stateofdisorder1 that's if they got to adulthood. The highest mortality rates before 1940 were children aged one month to eight years old. That rate doubles before about 1820 or so.
May I recommend going around the perimeter and tying orange tape at the fence line. That way there is no mistaking its location when the loggers come through. Hopefully the county will employ inmates to cut down the smaller trees and clear the brush. That’s a job for inmates if ever I saw one. Another great job! Thanks for sharing!

Matt Davis they say we are forgotten after 2 generations, maybe families moved away for various reasons who knows but youd think the counties would keep them up, lots of folks get community service for small crimes and other stuff youd think they could be used for that purpose now and then

Most of what you have found lately are family plots. This is a community grave yard. A now abandoned town had to have once close by. Once again, thank you for sharing.

Robert this is a big, big cemetery I am so sad at the condition of it, but maybe there are no survivor's left but then again look at the new stone that was replaced by great great, grandson from Texas, I'm so touched as you would lift up a broken stone to see if there was any information then carefully you would place it back and pat it that was caring and respectful. So glad you are going to go back and trim a path so we can see more. When you do film, would you see what the oldest and newest dates are? Also, as black as some of those stones were makes me think a fire went thru there and now there are all those young trees growing.

You are correct. In the south, it doesn't take very long for tree, especially pines to grow that large. Probably 5 to 10 years is all.

it is sad to see the destruction - teenagers of past and current eras continue to do such things
Trees falling can be very destructive as can be the stones' own weight once gravity takes a toll and they fall face first

I don't live very far away from Bowie County, Texas where his grandsons are from.
I just saw Nathaniel Boone’s grave and it was really nice of his grandsons to replace his headstone and to know he wasn’t forgotten
The Boones lived in NC in the middle and late 1700s. Kids and grandkids went to Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia.
And Indiana.

That was an unexpected surprise! Great finding these old graves, and those beautiful 100 foot tall or more cedar tree's with the Spanish moss. It makes the cemetery look good, but yeah your right it needs to be trimmed down some, and old piles of sticks and branches need to go. I lost count myself, I counted about 40, but lost track. It's a big cemetery, and the Boone headstone, put there by a relative, his great great great great grandson. Wonder if he's related to Daniel Boone! That would be so cool if you got all this information on the folks buried in this cemetery. Thank you for stopping and you and Cody, going out. I doubt if there Corona there in them woods, sky and trees make oxygen, just social distance at about 6 ft, ya'll be fine.
Go back and repeat your first place you made a video.
Very sad this isn't kept up. This is absolutely incredible, wow can't believe how many headstones. Once it would start to be cleared out it probably is larger than you would ever think.

I'm taking a break from Distance Teaching (yeah, it's a challenge for the teachers, too). I really enjoyed this video & am looking forward to the expanded version. I was curious about Nathaniel E Boone, with the replaced tombstone. Ancestry shows him in 1859 & 1860 living alone, near Lumpkin, Stewart Co., GA. In 1860, his occupation was overseer and his personal value was $3,000. He owned no real estate and he was not listed next to any Boone. On 13 July 1867 he took & signed the Voting Oath which in tiny print said that the responder denied that he "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States" and further, that he denied that he "gave aid and comfort to the enemies" [of the US]. In 1870 (55 y/o) he was living with James Boon (age 52) and presumably James's wife. They had a farm that Nathaniel was working on. The 1880 census shows him farming alone and listed as a widower. About 1883 the Georgia Property Tax Digest listed Nathaniel E Boone with debts of $1,400 and property value of $1,800. He died 1 Jan 1885. On 3rd June that year, court records show that he died intestate and that his estate was disbursed "as the law requires." There was no mention of any children. Yet Nathaniel 's memory is valued by many. I hope his Texas kin see this fascinating Sidestep Adventures video.

That looks like it was an amazing cemetery in its day. Now so many people forgotten to time
What a great application for a LIDAR camera equipped drone. You could cut through the vegetation and clearly see the locations of all of the stones. The latest iPad has a LIDAR camera on it, but I haven't seen it in action to know how well it would reveal all the stonework. Probably will see that on iPhones within two years though, so stay tuned. It could revolutionize old cemetery restoration/preservation and amateur archaeology in general.
Have you thought about using GPS to help mark these Cemeteries. Would help plot the outline and you could use it to lay out the graves.

I just can't believe how many children died and how young so many people dies back then.
It's just so sad.
They just didn't have the medical facilities and the medicine that we have today. People died of things that aren't a big deal today.
The average lifespan for humans without modern medicine is actually 40-50.
People get very sensitive when they see the graves of young children. They can't imagine the pain that the family of that child went through, especially the mother. But, up until the latter part of the 20th century, it was a common plight that every family who had kids suffered. Before antibiotics and improved hygiene came into play, it wasn't uncommon for a husband and wife to have 11-15 children (no birth control either!) and maybe 2-4 actually lived to adulthood. That was normal and expected though not liked. The abnormal (and most gossiped about) was when most of the children lived!
@@stateofdisorder1 that's if they got to adulthood. The highest mortality rates before 1940 were children aged one month to eight years old. That rate doubles before about 1820 or so.
May I recommend going around the perimeter and tying orange tape at the fence line. That way there is no mistaking its location when the loggers come through. Hopefully the county will employ inmates to cut down the smaller trees and clear the brush. That’s a job for inmates if ever I saw one. Another great job! Thanks for sharing!

Matt Davis they say we are forgotten after 2 generations, maybe families moved away for various reasons who knows but youd think the counties would keep them up, lots of folks get community service for small crimes and other stuff youd think they could be used for that purpose now and then

I was kicking back with a bucket of KFC and a few beers watching this show and thinking what a fine place to be laid to rest in those woods, only hope no bulldozer come along and spoils those resting, Cheers all.

Most of what you have found lately are family plots. This is a community grave yard. A now abandoned town had to have once close by. Once again, thank you for sharing.

Robert this is a big, big cemetery I am so sad at the condition of it, but maybe there are no survivor's left but then again look at the new stone that was replaced by great great, grandson from Texas, I'm so touched as you would lift up a broken stone to see if there was any information then carefully you would place it back and pat it that was caring and respectful. So sad all this people are forgotten but thanks to you maybe they won't for long .Thank you
