The greatest singer-songwriter of the past 50 years - the most insightful, most articulate, most consistently witty, most brutally honest and most life-affirming. Period. Thanks for posting.
Loudon is the most whacked out, disturbed, talented singer-Songwriter that no one knows. I feel sorry for the entire world, frankly, that he remains so obscure and not everyone gets to hear his music. I’m a bit sad that his personal relationships have been so f…ed up…but it’s made for great music. Simply my favorite of all time!
He’s playing in Albuquerque March 25. 2 1/2. Hour drive away. Worth it. He’s brutally honest He’s human with all the failings we all have yet never allow to come to the surface and expose with humility
If anybody can get this message to louden Wainwright the 3rd, My wife and I and all of my four adult children, Love you, and all of your music. To us you are a legend, And in our music Hall of fame, Lots of love, And God's blessings, The Wheelers x
first saw him just before his second album came out having heard Motel Blues etc on the John Peel show and then a couple more times. Then, about fifty years later in Birmingham only a stones throw from the town hall where I first saw him. Privileged to speak to him after the show - said his voice was just as good as 50 years earlier just more mellow. A backdrop to my late teens through to today.
"Being A Dad" at 19:12, "When You Leave" at 26.26, "The Ukulele Song" at 41:18, "Loudon The First" at 45:52. This was recorded in May 2005 in London's Bush Hall. I know as I was there centre front table.
Had the pleasure of seeing Loudon here in Brisbane years ago when he supported his friend Richard Thompson... I had about ten of his albums at the time and since then I've acquired a few more... He's such a natural talent - I also loved him as the mayor of a strange town in the fabulous film BIG FISH...
I saw him at Port Fairy Folk Festival many years ago. Storytelling, singing, connecting with his audience. Also saw Martha and Rufus over the years. All good.
i watched this with my mum when it was on bbc (she was 80) and she said why didn't you tell me about this man before now. I was so uplifted and felt..................I think you know the rest.
Wow , thank you so much for this. I'm a huge Loudo fan. I saw him in Spokane , Washington and Edmonton , Alberta years ago and had the chance to talk to him.He was very gracious and funny ! 😊👍💖
I'm pretty sure that's master-songwriter Peter Blegvad we see joining the audience there at 1:56. He wrote "Daughter" - a song Loudo wishes he could have written.
Every song he has ever done is good, but if you haven't heard it, go track down the rolling, reverberating cover of "Schooldays,' - the first song on his first album - on "The McGarrigle Hour" (CD 1998). Kata and Anna start it off, followed by Rufus and Martha, and then Loudon and Chaim - all of them singing together! It'll raise the hairs on the back of your neck - and make you smile.
I'm an Aussie and been a fan since 1972...seen him a few times ...but... a VB t-shirt????... rather drink my own urine!...lol...still...he is a legend.
"Martha's Dad "- sure thing.. it's sad isn't it that his two talented children from his marriage to the late great Kate McGarrigle are now far more famous than he is.. The man has been giving it is all on stages all over the planet and he still has that drive and natural humour mixed with sadness in an array of glorious songs that most of the songwriters who are held in esteem can't touch... He even had the bravery to release something as powerful as HITTING YOU.
I think it would be sad if he didn't take pleasure in the success of his kids... I mean, isn't that sort of the point of offspring? That you hope they outdo you?
@@jonkiparsky7369 I'm sure he does take great pleasure in their success Jon , I'm simply pointing out that a man of such resounding talent who gave the world these marvellously talented children is mostly remembered by the average music fan as the guy who gave us DEAD SKUNK and for most of his working life has gigged all around the world playing to small crowds in small venues and has had to hump his guitars around with him... I'm sad for him that he is not held in the same esteem as Rufus and Martha.
He has a hardcore fan base, as does Rufus and Martha. Only one or two of my friends have heard of them! They’re better than mainstream music. London won a Grammy! The kids haven’t, yet...
@@suesjoy Holy fucking shit... What is wrong with people today...Don't they care ???.. Are they ignorant to the nth degree ???... Anyone watching in 2024?
🎉🎉🎉 Loudo. Gotta Love him.
Just about to sit down and rewatch it, although I did see it when it was first aired. Going to see him next weekend in London. Can't wait.

Seen hom twin in Melbourne. One of the greats who filled my life.

Privileged to speak to him after the show - said his voice was just as good as 50 years earlier just more mellow. A backdrop to my late teens through to today.
Seen him a couple of times. Fantastic performer and songs with an incredible emotional range. Years of laughter and of sorrow.
Again I notice & see and hear how well he masters the guitar - picking and strumming sooo incredibly! In split seconds...
I saw him at Regents Park open air theatre in the 70's. Talented man.
Saw him in a pub sized venue in New Zealand about 25 years ago So lucky

Been listening off and on to Loudon since late 70's ... brilliant and wise and interesting and damn good

My all Time favorite - full out on Da BBC - got his vinyls...and cds too. Sames goes for The McGarrigle Sisters...and their OFF SPRING.
Thanks for uploading this, I watched it when it aired and always regretted not having a copy of it!

He has a knack for filling the available space with perfect syllables.

You're right! "Daughter" is a great song. I wish I could write a great song like it about my sons.
Good

well i understand Rufus better now....seriously.....;););)love this very much thank you mr. Wainwright....mr Guilty is wonderful!
national treasure (did a new portrait recently with Martha and Rufus as well to give him).

I don't know... I'll always remember him from M.A.S.H.
he is the jack nicholson of music
😢yeah but Jack ain't no Loudon !
Nice
Also, it's "The Ukelele Song" and "Half Fist".
Is that a Vic Bitter t shirt 😮
Can that be Joe Boyd in the crowd at 56.39?
Why is this in mono?
How does he remember all those fuc*ing words? This coming from a musician.

Thanks for letting me know. I have corrected it.
@@grumpybob but when was this filmed?
You spelled his name wrong, you know, with an "e" where there should be an "o."
Yes, it's known he hates the letter 'e'.
Thanks for letting me know. I have corrected it.
The people you’ve left can’t stand you.
