The day Tales came out, I ran to the store, came home and told my mother, "Unless there's a nuclear attack and we all have to say goodbye to each other, please don't bother me for the next two hours." I went in my room and set up Side One. I didn't own head phones, so I laid down on my bed with the speakers from my stereo on either side of my head. Shades down, lights out. No drugs, no pot. It was among the greatest 80 minutes of my entire life.

I did listen to it, many times, with my headphones on while I lay under the dining room table next to the stereo set up, I was just amazed this type of music exists. It was beyond the blues, beyond rock n' roll, beyond pop and disco, etc. It created a universe of its own. And all of this after they came out with Close to the Edge and kept it going with Relayer, and the GFTO!!!

I so miss these 5 spirits. Close your eyes and let their music move your spirit. Bach, Beethoven and then God gave me Yes.

My parents came home one night from a night of dancing as i listened to tales. As the ritual played out they danced and nailed it, in total swing fasion. Thank you Yes and thanks Mom and Dad.

Absolutely amazing. What a sound! Far and a way the best-sounding live version of Ritual from the decade when it was fresh. And more visuals than I could've ever hoped to see again, from my very first Yes tour when I was a wee 17-year-old! Fantastic work!

Sounds good, thanks for posting! I don't care what anyone says... Alan White was an absolute monster!

    • @ralphbuttawitz6945

Alan White was he just couldn't play Bruford's songs to save his life .... and he knows it. Millions of other drummers could now copy what Bruford did.... Back in 1972 they had a few choices none they got Bruford was a true innovator Yes even knew that Squire and Banks went to their graves knowing this.. Alan really was not a good replacement for the Yes that Bruford was in.... But ok 5 incredible albums to be intimidated by ... He made up for performance like this Holy Christ did he .... It was just a different Yes.. They had no choice.

    • @2visiondigital
      @2visiondigital 2 роки тому +1

Some true words. They needed a touring drummer. I wished they might of choosen someone like Michael Giles to keep the jazzy edge. Alas he was not a touring drummer. For many Yes was not the same after BB left, for many it made little difference.

@@2visiondigital Yes was not the same, after BB left, but in the end it was a change for the better. My opinion is not based on who was the better drummer. It is based on who was the better drummer for Yes. When they took their studio music on tour, we were all blown away by their sheer power, and Alan White was the perfect compliment for this. Despite his amazing talent, Bruford's style did not fit as well in the live performances. One other factor that people over look is that BB was quite unsettled and quit and rejoined the band more than once. Chances are he would have left again at some point in time, which would have created a certain level of chaos and instability for the band. So, I will reiterate, my opinion is not based on who was the better drummer, but who was the better drummer for Yes.

I was fortunate enough to see YES during their Tales Tour in February 1974, then again in November 1974, both at MSG. I've been hooked ever since! I got this album as a gift from my girlfriend at the time when I graduated JHS. Thanks for sharing.

The photo of the five of them at the end captures a very special moment at a very special time. Despite the hard knocks battles they had in making an album these fellows were young and in their prime. And they were not just a band. They were talented musicians. I wonder if at the time they realized how magnificent their work was and how it would transcend the years. Did they know they had made something for the ages? Did they know how good they were? Did they know we would love them so many decades later?

This is the best live version of this song I've ever heard. Rick and Steve were subtlety blending key and guitar tones together with a kind of symphonic sophistication I don't think had really been done in an electric live band at the time. What Steve and Rick were doing together was just magic, Fragile through Tales. *Thanks for this amazing production*

My 1st of x 10 YES Shows was on 2/16/74 (Evening Show @ the Spectrum Phila PA). No Opening Band and It was one of only 18 Shows in the US to hear TALES played Straight Through including 'The Remembering" which has only been played live in the US at total of x 20 ever (x 18 in '74 & x 2 in '76). PS: I got two more YES Bonuses in '74, On 11/20/74 @ MSG, NYC I witnessed there RELAYER Show and on 10/14/74, also @ MSG, I witness Rick do his JOURNEY/SIX WIVES Show. '1974 was "The Year of YES" and they became music SUPERSTARS. Well earned I might add!!

My first (of many!) Yes concert February 13, 1974 in Baltimore MD. I was already a die hard fan for a couple of years. I got an import copy of Tales for the previous Christmas and played it nonstop until the concert. They played the entire album and I may have been one of maybe a couple dozen people there that knew the music. People were getting restless and kept shouting “Roundabout!” . I was in heaven the whole evening. Thanks for posting this awesome trip down memory lane.

You'd think they'd have known what they were getting into!
OTOH, maybe the band didn't warn them. There seemed to be a lot of that going on in '73 and '74--it seems to be at the root of the "equal and opposite reaction" that eventually brought us punk.
But I know what you mean--I wish so much I could've been there.

This Sure Bring Me Back to my 1st and BEST of 10 YES Shows. I witnessed the TALES Show on 2/16/74 @ the Spectrum Phila (Evening Show). On the 2/16 Show, YES Played all of CTTE and all of TALES Straight Through w/ "Roundabout" to Close the Show. This is one of the BEST Sounding '74 Version of this Wonderful Song. I also Noticed That the Set List of this Show Lacks "The Remembering" Which is To Bad. My Show was one of 20 Shows where it was Performed in the US Ever. A Total of 32 Times in YES'S Concert History. PS: They Did get the BEST substitute Song Though "Starship Trooper" PSS: "Alan White" Performance during my Show was "Jaw Dropping" and He Sounds GREAT at this Show as Well!!

Seeing this footage and hearing that song..wow. I saw Yes in Pittsburgh, PA in December 1974. When they went into "Ritual" and that last part of the song, I will never forget the people sitting next to me. I was juat taking it all in, in awe of Yes' music and Roger Dean's stage set. When that "creature" above Alan White's drum kit opened it's wings, the people sitting next to me (who were quite stoned) thought it was going to take off and attack. I had to calm them down (I was sober). I will never forget that.

My favorite side has alwsys been side 2 -" The Remembering. I think Rick Wakeman's playing was very good. It is the furthest Rick has " gone out there." What I mean is the 3 free form keyboard interludes

One day the player shit the bed and refused to eject the tape nor to play anything but "The Ancient: Giant Under the Sun". So that's what I listened to for weeks, until I could replace the player.

Well put together sir! Very nice. Incredible piece of work this 4th track from Tales.
While I like very much, Tales from Topographic Oceans, I didn’t like the sound or placement of the vocals on the LP. Live tracks sound much better to my ear.
Blown away by Alan White’s playing on this. Sublime! It’s not a solo, but a well- crafted, orchestrated piece of percussion music. The pre-recorded track that plays during Alan’s bit is really affective / haunting.
I had the privilege to see them perform Tales when they first toured it at their SF show at Winterland. Stage setting was amazing! Like something out of middle earth, under the ocean, heaven, all combined!
Hard to come up with the right words to describe this work!! Cheerz

It's such a shame there isn't any more official material available from that tour - the playing and music was superb - and I really wish Yes would get someone to curate their music in the same way that David Singleton does for King Crimson, where some pretty poor quality recordings are enhanced somehow and made listenable. We need a Tales 74 tour version of progeny for sure!

Absolutely! Do you have/know of any better live versions of Tales 1-3? I have trawled through Yessongs.nl and of all the live versions I have heard, Detroit seems about the best of the complete Tales recordings i.e there aren't lots of cuts in them like Frankfurt. As well as the Tales material, the playing on the CTTE tracks -and Starship- was also superb on this tour, especially RWs which is contradictory to all of his continued negative comments.

I prefer Rick's mysterious deep space voicings and all the subtle stuff he does with tones here. Really nothing like it had ever been done at the time. Also Rick's Moogs are in tune. Patrick was with them when I saw them play this on the Relayer tour, Patrick was stunning on the Relayer pieces but the rest was just meh imhop. He's a great keyboardist tho.

No other band comes close to YES. There are great prog bands...Genesis-Crimson-Tull-etc...They just don't give me what Yes does. Musical excellence at the top of the heap. As good as any classical composition.
