  • The Tigris River, a great river in Western Asia, is the easternmost of the two great rivers that define Mesopotamia, the region where great cultures arose in ancient times such as the Sumerians, the Assyrians, the Babylonians.
    This river flows south from the mountains of eastern Turkey through Iraq and empties into the Persian Gulf.

    GEOGRAPHY
    1. The Tigris is about 1,900 km long. It rises in the Taurus Mountains of eastern Turkey and flows generally southeast. It travels 400 km in Turkey, 32 km on the border with Syria and 1,418 km in Iraqi territory, until it joins the Euphrates near Al Qurna in southern Iraq.
    2. The union of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers forms the Shatt al-Arab river, which flows into the Persian Gulf, before receiving the great Karun river from Iran.
    3. Being an essential source of resources such as food and fresh water, the banks of the Tigris River are a common place for human settlements. Along its route it passes culturally and economically important cities since ancient times, such as Mosul, Baghdad and Samarra, through arid and semi-arid regions.
    4. Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, is located on the banks of the Tigris River, this city being the limit point for navigation on this river.
    5. The Tigris River drains a basin of 375,000 km2 more or less the entire surface of Germany and discharges on average about 1,014 m3/s. which would represent almost half the flow of the Nile River.
    6. It is fed by some rivers, such as the Great Zab, the Little Zab, the Diala, the Botan, the Garzar, to mention its main tributaries, most of them have their sources in the neighboring country of Iran.
    7. The course of the Tigris River is interrupted by numerous dams, both in Iraq and in Turkey, to provide water necessary for the irrigation of arid and semi-desert regions in the valley crossed by the same river.
