I love these walks Robbie! It’s my way of getting to see the UK. Currently, my only connections is our State flag (the Hawai’i State flag has the Union Jack 🇬🇧 in it since the Hawaiian monarchy used to study in London in the early 1800s) and some lingo that still exists here but not in the rest of America (Eg. we still say “rubbish” here...all of the mainlanders I’ve ever met say “trash”/“garbage”)...so I really enjoy seeing all of these different sites, and you’re always in good company! 😁 Aloha from Honolulu! 😁🤙🏽 PS - Thank you for wearing that shirt. I’ve had friends go to the UK and a bunch of other European countries...and when they heard my friends’ American accent, they usually gave a pretty muted greeting...but my friends said that as soon as they realized that my friends were from Hawai’i, their whole demeanor changed. It’s just a very different atmosphere here, compared to the states I’ve lived in or visited (California, Portland, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Illinois, and Utah). The first noticeable difference is that we don’t have a majority race...all 49 states are majority white and different mixtures of minorities. But in Hawai’i, white is a minority just like everyone else. Also, we’re known as the Aloha State because of our Aloha Spirit...most people think that means that we’re just friendly, jovial people...but let’s be real, we can be grumpy and moody like any other human being. Instead, I think of the Aloha Spirit akin to The Golden Rule...thinking about others. So you’ll see people letting others cut onto the freeways, and the person cutting will wave “thank you” because they’d want others to do that to them...you’ll see strangers offering to help the elderly carry their groceries to their car, ‘cause they’d hope that someone would do that for their grandparents. Oh yeah, I’ll never call myself a “Hawaiian”...I always refer to myself as a “Hawai’i resident”. It’s just a consideration thing. “Hawaiian” refers to “Native Hawaiians”, the indigenous people of this land...the Hawaiian Monarchy were the royalty of Native Hawaiians. The most well known person of Native Hawaiian ancestry ATM would be Jason Momoa. Out of respect for him and all of my friends that are Native Hawaiian, I will always refer to myself as a “Hawai’i resident”, and I’ll always take a few minutes to explain why it’s important to me. 😁 I hope you get to visit us one day...it really is a very unique place, especially in Honolulu, which looks like any other big city...but a 15-min drive and you can be in a rain forest. And if you venture over to the Big Island in January...you may be able to go snowboarding in the morning and surfing in the afternoon.
