I’ve used Unreal for years, but it was this year that I started developing my own game seriously. As far as I can see it it’s an opportunity. But it’s so sad to see great solo devs struggling to make ends meet while AAA will spend close to a billion on slop.
In a strange way, these industries have the life cycle of the silver maples in my yard. They were planted when the house was built, grew tall and big fast, and looked amazing for years. I remember them being so brilliant when I was a kid. Then, decades later... With each passing year, they don't fill as full of leaves each season. More moss and fungus starts to take hold. Eventually, the ivy gets a foothold on their trunks and starts to grow, sapping resources and weighing down the old tree. Now, they are practically dead. Maybe an old main branch still produces a few leaves, but it's mostly the ivy that's green. And with every storm, the rotted out branches drop more and more. Now, they're just decaying monoliths to a prior era and are honestly dangerous to be around. Truthfully, I'm just waiting for the big storm to finally fall the things and give a chance what was shaded out before.
I've turned a page this year with gaming. Switched to Linux and winding down playing games that have cash shops, loot boxes, and battlepasses. At this point I've been burned so many times over the past 20 years I've lost all trust in the gaming industry.
Haven't paid for AAA in 10+ years, you should too! If they're not gonna put out functioning games without agendas for $60 and up, I'll ignore it or steal it.
Another major gaming flop in 2024 hat mostly flew under the radar (at least for people not into racing games) was Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown where they took a franchise that had previously been playable both online and offline and made it into an always-online live service, alienating those of us who only every played TDU as an offline single-player game and even for people who were interested in playing TDU:SC online, it was frequently not possible to connect to the servers or the servers would cut out mid-race, rendering the game completely unplayable, and the servers are region-specific so that it's difficult to find other players online to race with. There are a myriad of other issues with TDU:SC such as sub-par graphics for a 2024 racing game, poorly optimized performance especially on consoles, missing features from previous TDU games such as houses, missions outside of racing, and police, and a much smaller map than either of the first two TDU games. It also featured a casino in its early trailers but that was not present in the game at launch and is not planned to release until next year, assuming they don't pull the plug on it. (Personally, I really don't care about the presence of a casino in a racing game but it seems to be something which a lot of other people are disappointed by its absence at launch.) As a result, the game has pretty much flatlined, with Steam player counts now having daily peaks under 300 (and I doubt it's doing much better on consoles). I know they're calling TDU:SC a "double A" game instead of a "triple A" game to soften the blow of its failure, but it's a game that took at least half a decade to make and which has many very expensive exotic car manufacturer licenses including Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche so the cost of its failure has got to be in the dozens of millions at least.
You forgot to add Alan wake 2. It came out late '23, but the dlc JUST came out and news is circulating again about the CEO crying about how his 10/10, perfect masterpiece, critically acclaimed game, didn't sell at all.
I feel lucky to not care about AAA games for well over 15 years now. They have so much bloat, they waste so much of your time, oh look another 3D field to push up on the left stick to for 40 hours with no challenge, no thanks. Indies and arcade games only baby
That's some heavy inspiration at the end there. I (finally) learned to not pre-order last year, and indie games are about all I've bought for a hot minute. I miss big-budget games, but if nobody's making them, I'll play what I can.
Definitely like how realistic while still be optimistic to a practical solutions, simply by stop supporting what hates you and bad, and simply go elsewhere or create that's good. I also like how your not anti capitalist, more critical and informative to the corporate culture to the safe and Medicare mindset in gaming and films today, and simply saying the companies are not greedy, simply incompetent and arrogant to their company, even if they charge more then earned, you still have the choice to pay or not, as even with greed it's still a inferior product. So I respect how your level headed and being clear and simple to the issue.
It's been a long time sinc even bought a game at launch. I think elden ring was it. I typically wait a year and buy games on sale. Sure, I'm not the first to experience them, but I don't mind. I like playing them in a more working and finished state, and by then they are usually on sale for half off, if not more. I call that winning.
Lol the old media have been dying since the creation of the internet and Hollywood studio have been dying since the netflix started making movie and tv show
Oh, I'm sorry if i don't want to pay R$350,00 (roughly $70,00) on political propaganda disguised as a game with uninteresting and unappealing characters.
It's past due for a AAA market correction. Let our game backlogs entertain us until we see newer and brighter studios emerge from their ashes! HAZZAH!!!!
Yup and this applies for the Tech industry in general. We are long overdue for a market correction. Though, with the amount of money these AAA's have they will just buy up these newer brighter studios and whore them out. Like EA has done for decades.
Modern devs are less interested in making a quality game that customers will buy, they are more interested in only marketing a product to create hype to juice up the stock prices and profit has increasingly become less important as time has gone by, and executives are more interested in pleasing the shareholders so they can stay as long as possible so they can extract as much value from the company for them selves then be being actually good at their jobs. The film Industry is a lot like that to awful results as well as lot of other industries as well.
The silent protest in the form of boycott you brought up is the most effective "weapon" we customers have. I want to add to that: If you do not buy the games, do not "acquire" them at the high seas either - and do not talk about the games. Just let them rot. And if one of these should be successful nevertheless, so be it - in that case, the target audience exists and you just are not part of it. The worst thing that can happen is that you lose the thing because no-one will cater to you. But then there's plenty of other stuff to do, and don't forget the huge selection of older games, many of which have aged very well. (I wonder if that's one reason why the big corpos are so heavily trying to fight that?) By the way, did anyone of you notice that the term "customer" is less and less frequently used, and "consumer" has taken its place? This tells a lot about the big mega corporations. They do not see the buyers of the games as their customers, they see them as a part of their product. The real customers of these corporations are the shareholders and having a product that sells to consumers is only a means to please these shareholders. And the fact that the small ones often do it better doesn't only apply to games. I had noticed it in all sorts of businesses. The smaller ones might not have all the bells and whistles the large ones advertise, but at least most of them keep their promises and you get what you pay for, instead of paying for a chance to get a subset of what had been advertised.
There are two games I would like to see as GOTY: Elden Ring DLC because it would be funny to have a damn DLC to win another trophy for Miyazaki and leave behind other games or Balatro because it would be also hillarious to have a pixel card poker rogue-like to run over all other games.
I'm pretty sure the company shareholder conference calls would feature the audience reviews the product as if the games sells well, its just they simply don't sell. In absence of that they cite the critics, then journo's ... failing anything positive from the industry they will declare how bold their vision is and brave their investments to lead the others etc etc.
This is why I created Ishanekon: World Shapers. I was fed up with D&D and the overpriced garbage that Wizards of the Coest. I offer more choice and better balance that they ever will and all of it for free. Support Indie Games. Thats were the real art and innovations lie.
I was actually hyped as hell for Indiana Jones, until I found out it was first person and after seeing that "modern audience" guy in the game's presentation 🤢
One things this games de-evolution has done has gotten me back to my 3d printer where I can print off as many middle fingers as i can on a plate. I'll be distributing them to all these wokies.... might take a while. For ppl that really pissed me off, i'll paint it for free.
IMO, the past year was a really good year for the videogame industry in terms of quality, but this year is even better, almost every month a lot of games where interesting to me but also this year a lot of triple A were flops like Foamstars, Suicide Squad Kill the justice league, Dragon Age, Skull and bones, Dustborn, Concord etc…
I saw a lot in the industry happen the past 2 years. I remember when the FTC went after Microsoft for the Activision merger and that other companies like Sony stood against it. I remember when Sony said they were going into the Games as a Service direction and thought how unwise that would be. Now developers under them and Microsoft are getting dismantled. I see Microsoft going in a different direction where it seems like they are running around like a chicken without it's head regarding the definition of the XBox brand. I feel like only Nintendo has been the only constant in all of this. I recall where I had to have a deep discussion with one of my friends because they thought my spiritual beliefs went against my politics and I got stereotyped. I am glad the we both reached an understanding. I saw how entertainment has gone in a bad direction with terrible writing and trying to force social issues into a franchise. Now that franchise is either ruined or close to being ruined. I disliked Star Wars the Acolyte. But I was entertained by Andor. I liked Transformers One, but I was severely disappointed with Rings of Power Season 2. I'll just do what I like to do and hope it contributes to promoting a positive outlook in my social circles. I play video games with friends, chat on Discord and do Livestreams in which I try promote a safe environment for people to watch and not experience any toxic issues. It doesn't matter how small my contribution is. If I reach a small population, that's better than reaching no population. Thx for the video.
The old growth forest is currently burning down. Its so dramatic that it looks like the end of everything. But it isn't. Its merely the natural cycle of renewal that is long overdue. Once the old and stagnant mess that's been clogging up the ecosystem has been cleared out, it will make room for fresh new life to grow and flourish. And, hopefully it will be better than what came before. But, it will only be better if we make it better. If we learn from the mistakes of the past, and never repeat them.
I recommend rippaverse comics and my favorite indie comic Kamen America! Also hades 2 and palworld have been two of my favorite games of the year. Otherwise, i play good old PS2 titles, such a great catalogue

*Plays Indie games and the occasional classic rerelease.* What bad games lol. Seriously, the best advice I can give is step away from the AAA space and wait to see how the game library grows before buying the next big console. The PS5 has been a dumpster for remasters of games that aren’t old enough to warrant them and mediocre sequels. I dodged a bullet on not getting that. Edit: Okay yeah, I agree! Give indie games a chance

If you do not gatekeep, the shit comes it.
We made it too big. The vultures are circling.
The only game in the world people actually wanted a remake for and they changed everything.
Honestly the Elden Ring DLC is probably better than most of the full sized games put out this past year.
elden ring is just amazing. :)
Yeah, one look at it and I was like, it's crap!!!! Seems my first impression way back when has bloomed into full on truth!
This is one of the best new channels, to come out of the cess filled arse, called UA-cam. No grifting, just uplifting.
I feel lucky to not care about AAA games for well over 15 years now. They have so much bloat, they waste so much of your time, oh look another 3D field to push up on the left stick to for 40 hours with no challenge, no thanks.
Indies and arcade games only baby
Right on.
What a perfect way to start my morning. Thank you for making videos! Especially ones like this. Very motivating. Dare I say magical
The last 25% of video => instant sub.
Lol the old media have been dying since the creation of the internet and Hollywood studio have been dying since the netflix started making movie and tv show
Oh, I'm sorry if i don't want to pay R$350,00 (roughly $70,00) on political propaganda disguised as a game with uninteresting and unappealing characters.
did you watch the video?
@RealLifeFakeWizard it was supposed to be sarcastic.
"So let's TACO-bout it" hahaha
Hey! I'll play the Indiana Jones game... on gamepass
The inspiration speech was.. well timed. Thanks.
We customers ARE the ones messing the companies up!
-By not falling for their scams!😂
It's past due for a AAA market correction. Let our game backlogs entertain us until we see newer and brighter studios emerge from their ashes! HAZZAH!!!!
Yup and this applies for the Tech industry in general. We are long overdue for a market correction. Though, with the amount of money these AAA's have they will just buy up these newer brighter studios and whore them out. Like EA has done for decades.
Haven't cared about the game awards for awhile always felt rigged.
At this point I already started to say "May the Mass Shadow Generator be with You" instead (look Kotor 2).
At least the journalist they pay might play their crappy games
The problem with awards based on fans is that there is no way to prove who the fans actually are
I think that's why they opted for a membership style operation. Good point.
(I wonder if that's one reason why the big corpos are so heavily trying to fight that?)
By the way, did anyone of you notice that the term "customer" is less and less frequently used, and "consumer" has taken its place? This tells a lot about the big mega corporations. They do not see the buyers of the games as their customers, they see them as a part of their product. The real customers of these corporations are the shareholders and having a product that sells to consumers is only a means to please these shareholders.
And the fact that the small ones often do it better doesn't only apply to games. I had noticed it in all sorts of businesses. The smaller ones might not have all the bells and whistles the large ones advertise, but at least most of them keep their promises and you get what you pay for, instead of paying for a chance to get a subset of what had been advertised.
Thanks, I needed that pep talk n permission. Bout time we get started, right?
Why do I feel attacked during the chasing dreams part?
When i heard about corruption in Games Award i was thinking for myself to do Gamers Game Awards and it's nice to see that somebody beat me to it :D
@4:20 as a sonic fan, I should be mad for him not mentioning sonic x shadow. At the end of the day, I cant be mad because im just a chill guy
It's so unfair that Prince of Persia didn't sell well. Such a great search action title ❤
Always good indies when you ignore mainstream. Check out UFO 50
As a fellow mage I do agree with you, except on death, for I will never die-- Christ will raise me.
I hope I've set games back 25 years because man 98-99 were great years for games.
You know what didn't flop on sales? Dragonball let's go!!!!
I'm one of the people who don't buy all these games I only buy good games I know I'll play and enjoy
The only game I will pre order is kcd2
8:23 Quite protest is a bad idea. These companies will not listen if they cannot hear us.
This is why I created Ishanekon: World Shapers. I was fed up with D&D and the overpriced garbage that Wizards of the Coest. I offer more choice and better balance that they ever will and all of it for free.
Support Indie Games. Thats were the real art and innovations lie.
That's not right, Wizard.
You should add, cancel Netflix, as well.
Yea man, lets get Green Pilled! There is hope for everyone and everything they care about. It does matter so lets fight for it!
Love this guy
Final fantasy rebirth floped ? Didn't know that😢
Yes
Thank you, wizard-san!
Im here for the unhinged wizard rants 🍻
“No! It wasn’t me! It was the one armed Man!”
I'm very sorry. I don't know what I was thinking ruining video games for everyone. I won't do it again, promise.
Dude, if someone offers you a large enough bag to sell yourself and shill, go for it. Don't worry about us, we will recognize that it happened and move on.
I leave money on the table all the time. It's an amazing feeling. To be able to say no one owns my soul is the greatest feeling in the world.
What is the soundtrack used around 1:21? Anyone know?
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Thank you for letting me know!
Im sorry everyone, I ruined Video Games, I kept complaining about DEI and shit games, and they just kept making them, if only I complained about good games, then maybe they would have been making those instead...Oh well, I'll be playing WH 40k SM 2, Wukong, Metaphor and my favorite free gachas Genshin, HSR, & ZZZ this holiday season
investors and shareholders need to wise up, these companies have fleeced many of them, and journalists and the likes of metacritic help them
Lettuce go taco bout it.
Well I'm pretty screwed when it comes to 3D fighting games as there's only Tekken 8, Dead or Alive 6 or at least thankfully Virtua Fighter 5 coming to PC.
I don't care any longer who's "fault" it is for the state of the industry, finger pointing at this point is useless. Just let it DEI and rebuild from what remains after the dust settles!
My man is speaking real fake magic
Lists all of the AAA games that have flopped because no one bought them: "CHOOSE NOT TO BUY INDUSTRY SLOB!" Good wizard.. i cannot buy these games even harder then im allready not buying them!
I really didn’t stay on that point too long. It was clearly much more about points two and three.
@@RealLifeFakeWizard Its just a nitpick, i do get the gist of what youre trying to say there. But this year has been a devastating blow for those AAA slob producers, and hopefully that means they got the much needed reality check that is desperatly needed to be more customer centric again
Why do shareholder care how a game/movie/show reviews? All they care about is how much money did it make.
The idea in their heads is: People are so dumb and sheeplike now, that if their favorite talking heads praise it then they will buy it no questions asked.
Its sad how true that is for so many, isn't it?
