It is also sometimes called as the “festival of love” as on this day people get to unite together forgetting all resentments and all types of bad feeling towards each other. The great Indian festival lasts for a day and a night, which starts in the evening of Purnima or the Full Moon Day in the month of Falgun. It is celebrated with the name Holika Dahan or Choti Holi on first evening of the festival and the following day is called Holi. In different parts of the country it is known with different names.

होलिका दहन की मुख्य कथा
होली से सम्बन्धित मुख्य कथा के अनुसार एक नगर में हिरण्यकश्यप नाम का दानव राजा रहता था। वह सभी को अपनी पूजा करने को कहता था, लेकिन उसका पुत्र प्रह्लाद भगवान विष्णु का उपासक भक्त था। हिरण्यकश्यप ने भक्त प्रहलाद को बुलाकर राम का नाम न जपने को कहा तो प्रहलाद ने स्पष्ट रूप से कहा, पिताजी! परमात्मा ही समर्थ है। प्रत्येक कष्ट से परमात्मा ही बचा सकता है। मानव समर्थ नहीं है। यदि कोई भक्त साधना करके कुछ शक्ति परमात्मा से प्राप्त कर लेता है तो वह सामान्य व्यक्तियों में तो उत्तम हो जाता है, परंतु परमात्मा से उत्तम नहीं हो सकता।
यह बात सुनकर अहंकारी हिरण्यकश्यप क्रोध से लाल पीला हो गया और नौकरों सिपाहियों से बोला कि इसको ले जाओ मेरी आँखों के सामने से और जंगल में सर्पों में डाल आओ। सर्प के डसने से यह मर जाएगा। ऐसा ही किया गया। परंतु प्रहलाद मरा नहीं, क्योंकि सर्पों ने डसा नहीं।
प्रह्लाद की कथा के अतिरिक्त यह पर्व राक्षसी ढुंढी, राधा कृष्ण के रास और कामदेव के पुनर्जन्म से भी जुड़ा हुआ है।कुछ लोगों का मानना है कि होली में रंग लगाकर, नाच-गाकर लोग शिव के गणों का वेश धारण करते हैं तथा शिव की बारात का दृश्य बनाते हैं। कुछ लोगों का यह भी मानना है कि भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने इस दिन पूतना नामक राक्षसी का वध किया था। इसी खु़शी में गोपियों और ग्वालों ने रासलीला की और रंग खेला था।
